Three members of a family die by suicide in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Feb 24 (IANS) In a shocking incident, three members of a family died by suicide in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

The incident occurred in the Amberpet area of the city.

Police said that Ramaraju, 55, his wife Madhavi, 50, and their son, Shashank, 24, were found dead at their house.

Alerted by the neighbours, police rushed to the spot and shifted the bodies to the Osmania General Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.

It is suspected that under a suicide pact, Ramaraju and Shashank strangled Madhavi to death with a pillow. Ramaraju hanged himself while Shashank cut his wrists with a knife to end his life.

The family is believed to have resorted to the extreme step due to financial problems.

Police recovered the suicide note left behind by the family. Preliminary investigation shows that the family members were depressed after suffering losses in the business. They had also borrowed money from various sources.

The family is believed to have died by suicide around 3.15 a.m. Ramaraju sent a WhatsApp message to his friend Ravi, informing him that they are ending their lives. Ravi, who saw the message at 8 a.m., rushed to Ramaraju’s house, but by then all three family members had died.

Ravi informed the police, who rushed to the spot. The Clues team gathered clues. Police also recorded the statements of the relatives and neighbours of the family.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Narsaiah told the media at the spot that the family was running a hotel in Amberpet and was distressed after suffering losses.

In the suicide note, Ramaraju gave details of the loans they had taken for the business from various sources.

Police have registered a case and are taking up further investigation. A police officer said they were investigating the case from all angles.

New Delhi, Dec 14 (IANS) Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Sunday said that India’s “next big energy leap is here” with 900 KTPA (kilo tonnes per annum) of Green Hydrogen being planned by 2030 to prepare the country’s way for cleaner industries, low-carbon supply chains and new-age jobs, for the future.

In a post on X, the minister termed this as “a bold step towards a greener economy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership”.

India’s oil sector Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), including Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum and upstream giant ONGC, are actively developing a significant portion of the nation’s green hydrogen capacity to achieve this target as part of the larger National Green Hydrogen Mission. The aim is to cut fossil fuel reliance, reduce imports, and become a clean energy leader, supported by incentive schemes and domestic manufacturing.

This initiative complements the broader National Green Hydrogen Mission, which targets 5 MMT (Million Metric Tonnes) total production by 2030 and incentivises electrolyser manufacturing and green hydrogen production.

The National Green Hydrogen Mission is a strategic government initiative to transform India into a global hub for green hydrogen, attracting huge investments and creating jobs.

The Petroleum Minister has also highlighted the progress under the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme (GHCI) and that state energy companies will save the country Rs 1 lakh crore in imports.

“India is building trust in every molecule of hydrogen. The Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme (GHCI), launched in April 2025, ensures hydrogen is genuinely green — produced using renewable power with emissions below 2 kg carbon dioxide per kg,” Puri stated earlier.

This drive positions India to meet its climate goals while fostering a new clean energy economy, with PSUs playing a crucial role in scaling up domestic production capacity.

Union Minister Shripad Y. Naik said last month that India is steadily advancing toward 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070.

The minister highlighted the National Green Hydrogen Mission’s transition from planning to implementation, with incentive schemes worth Rs 17,000 crore and projects awarded for 3,000 MW per annum of domestic electrolyser manufacturing and 862,000 tonnes per annum of green hydrogen production.

The minister added that India’s installed non-fossil-fuel-based power generation capacity has reached nearly 260 GW, led by solar and wind energy.

TVK flags ‘Delhi interference’ as alliance talks stall ahead of TN polls

Chennai, Jan 27 (IANS) The fledgling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which has been compelled to announce a solo contest in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, on Tuesday raised its first major grievance over the lack of alliance partners.

Senior leader K.A. Sengottaiyan took a veiled swipe at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of using its power at the Centre to disrupt alliance negotiations in the State.

Speaking to reporters in Coimbatore, Sengottaiyan, the chief coordinator of TVK’s high-level administrative committee, alleged that whenever discussions on tie-ups begin, “interference from Delhi” follows.

Responding to a question on whether expelled AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam might join TVK, he remarked that the moment alliance talks surface, “those from Delhi step in,” adding that it was therefore better not to speculate on such matters.

Dismissing suggestions that TVK was disappointed by AMMK leader T.T.V. Dhinakaran joining the National Democratic Alliance, Sengottaiyan said Dhinakaran had initially explored the possibility of aligning with TVK but later altered his decision due to the prevailing political situation—an apparent reference to BJP pressure.

On speculation that PMK founder S. Ramadoss was in talks with TVK, he said he had heard similar reports and added cryptically, “Let good things happen.”

Responding to actor-politician Vijay’s criticism that the AIADMK had forgotten the legacy of C. N. Annadurai, Sengottaiyan said both the DMK and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) had strayed from Anna’s ideals.

He said he quit the AIADMK because it had forgotten “Amma, Thalaivar and Anna,” alleging that the party no longer even displays its iconic leaders’ portraits at public events—his first major grievance against party chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami, which eventually led to his exit.

Referring to Palaniswami’s earlier remark at a rally that TVK’s flag was fluttering at his meeting, Sengottaiyan said the comment reflected expectations that no longer hold true.

He accused the AIADMK’s ministers and IT wing of targeting TVK instead of exposing alleged DMK wrongdoing, citing the ‘Panaiyur Panniyar’ attack on Vijay, and claimed this showed the AIADMK was acting as the DMK’s “B team.”

On corruption allegations against him, Sengottaiyan said courts had cleared him of all charges, asserting that cases were filed out of political vendetta. He warned of legal action against anyone who continued to level such accusations.

NHRC seeks report from Tamil Nadu DGP over alleged negligence in Chennai air show tragedy

New Delhi, May 23 (IANS) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Director General of Police (DGP) of Tamil Nadu, demanding an “action taken report” in connection with alleged negligence during the Indian Air Force (IAF) air show held at Marina Beach, Chennai, in October 2024.

The directive of the commission has come after a formal complaint that alleged serious lapses in planning and crowd management leading to five deaths and over 200 hospitalisations during the event.

The air show, organised on October 6, 2024, as part of the IAF’s 92nd anniversary celebrations, attracted tens of thousands of spectators. But the event swiftly and in no time turned chaotic due to overcrowding and alleged mismanagement, intense heat, and inadequate facilities, especially drinking water and shade.

The NHRC, in proceedings dated May 23, stated that it had received a complaint on October 10, 2024, specifically naming the Greater Chennai City Commissioner of Police. The complainant, an advocate, alleged that gross negligence and misuse of authority by senior police officials contributed to the tragedy and demanded a formal inquiry and disciplinary action.

According to the complaint, “five individuals lost their lives as a result of negligence and alleged misuse of authority”, and many others endured “physical injuries and mental trauma owing to the mismanagement during the air show”.

Eyewitnesses had earlier reported that elderly people and children were left standing in direct sunlight for hours as the show ran from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., without adequate medical support or shaded areas.

A large number of people at the event venue reportedly fainted. This happened even before event actually began. Emergency services were reportedly overwhelmed as more than 200 spectators were rushed to nearby government hospitals with symptoms of dehydration, heatstroke, and exhaustion.

Taking suo motu cognisance, the NHRC has now directed the Tamil Nadu DGP to submit a detailed report within four weeks, explaining what actions have been taken in response to the allegations, and what preventive steps will be implemented to avoid such incidents in the future.
