Three youths arrested with large haul of US dollars in Kolkata

Kolkata, Feb 25 (IANS) Three youths possessing $450,000 (over Rs 4 crore) were arrested from Kolkata’s Park Street area, police said on Wednesday.

The youths were arrested from the Park Street police station area on Tuesday night, police said, adding that an investigation has been launched. The arrested youths were to be produced before a court.

According to police sources, the names of the arrested youths are Sayan Das, Mohammad Asad, and Feroz Khan. All three are said to be residents of Mumbai.

Officers of Park Street police station saw the three men roaming around suspiciously on Tuesday night. On becoming suspicious, the police officers questioned them. After that, their bags were checked, and the US dollars, arranged in layers, were recovered.

On questioning, the arrested trio said that they work in a currency exchange office and that they were going to Mumbai with the money from there. At this, the police officers asked them to show them the relevant documents. The youths, however, could not show the proper documents related to the dollars, and the Park Street police station arrested the youths on charges of illegal money laundering.

“The dollars have been seized. The arrested youths will be produced in a court. Investigation is on to find out whether they are a part of a bigger money laundering racket,” a senior Kolkata Police official said.

Ahead of the state Assembly polls, the police have increased surveillance in Kolkata and across the state to recover illegal supply of arms and money. The recent arrest is an outcome of continuous surveillance of city roads and major intersections.

Toronto, June 17 (IANS) Canadian journalist Daniel Bordman on Tuesday said that public opinion in Canada has turned largely negative towards the Khalistani movement, which he described as a factor that made the country look “a bit silly” and severely strained Canada-India relations in 2023.

His remarks come as hundreds of Khalistani extremists held demonstrations in Alberta against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, coinciding with the ongoing Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada.

PM Modi is attending the summit as a special guest alongside world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Among the protesters, one of the leaders, Manjinder Singh, made provocative statements, declaring he was prepared to “ambush Modi” and “kill India’s PM Modi’s politics,” sparking sharp condemnation.

Speaking to IANS, Bordman said, “I’ve been to an ‘Ambush Modi’ protest. They ambushed Modi. He wasn’t near them, but they were still ambushing. The Khalistanis are into batting, and normal Canadians are just terribly confused as to why they’re yelling so much.”

He said the Khalistani movement had peaked around the time of the Hardeep Singh Nijjar controversy, when Canada’s liberal government, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, included several individuals with extremist affiliations.

“At the end of 2023, Khalistan had sort of maximum strength because you had a liberal government run by Justin Trudeau, deeply infiltrated with people with all types of extremist backgrounds. A lot of Khalistanis, especially within the Cabinet. And then there was Jagmeet Singh, a minority leader who’s an open Khalistani,” Bordman said.

“This is the reason why Khalistan had sort of maximum strength in 2023, and that caused lots of problems. That led to the whole Canada-India fight, broke down our relations with India, generally made the country look a bit silly, with all the people waving swords, tearing up flags,” he added.

Bordman noted a shift in how Khalistani extremism is now viewed among Canadian locals.

“It feels nice to know that now people know what the Khalistani movement is and have a pretty negative opinion about it… Khalistani movement doesn’t have a good reputation,” he said.

He pointed out that frustration has grown among ordinary Canadians, who are now more vocal about their disapproval of the movement.

“You need someone to run drugs in a truck through the country, you know who to call. You need a functioning stable country, do not call Gurpatwant Singh Pannun,” he added, referring to the self-styled Khalistani leader.

DMK adopts resolution condemning Amit Shah’s remarks on Ambedkar

Chennai, Dec 22 (IANS) The DMK on Sunday passed a resolution condemning Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on B. R. Ambedkar.

The resolution was passed during the executive committee meeting, convened at the party headquarters, Anna Arivalayam, in Chennai.

The meeting presided over by DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, also strongly opposed the proposed ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill.

Additionally, a resolution was passed against the proposed tungsten mining project in the Madurai district.

Around 1,000 party functionaries attended the meeting, including key DMK leaders such as General Secretary Duraimurugan, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, Treasurer T. R. Baalu, Principal Secretary K. N. Nehru, Organising Secretary R. S. Bharathi, MP Kanimozhi, and other senior members.

As part of its strategy for the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the DMK has set an ambitious target of winning 200 out of the 234 Assembly seats.

To achieve this, the party has asked its members to intensify efforts to promote the welfare schemes implemented under Chief Minister Stalin’s leadership.

The DMK has deployed full-time representatives for every Assembly constituency, reporting directly to an election cell operating from the party’s state headquarters.

This election cell is headed by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, who also leads the party’s youth wing.

Senior leaders, including Organising Secretary R. S. Bharathi and ministers Thangam Thenarasu, E. V. Velu, and K. N. Nehru, are members of the election cell.

These full-time representatives are tasked with engaging the public and highlighting the transformative impact of the state government’s welfare schemes at the grassroots level.

Currently, the DMK holds 133 seats in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, supported by allies such as the Congress (18), VCK (4), CPI (2), and CPI-M (2), bringing the alliance’s total to 159 seats.

In the previous elections, the DMK-led alliance secured an impressive 45.38 per cent vote share. With the appointment of full-time constituency coordinators and close monitoring by senior leaders, including Udhayanidhi Stalin, the party is gearing up for a robust campaign to consolidate its position in the state.

MP: Blood cancer patient avails free treatment under Ayushman Bharat scheme

Ahmedabad, Dec 26 (IANS) Gildar Singh Dawar, a native of Madhya Pradesh, faced a life-threatening situation when he was detected with blood cancer (leukemia) in 2017 and has been undergoing expensive treatment since then, only to find big relief in 2022 when he enrolled himself as one of the beneficiaries of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY).

Under the flagship scheme of Prime Minister Modi-led government, Dawar is not only recuperating from failing health but also saving incurred expenses since 2017, to the tune of about Rs 25,000 every month.

Speaking to IANS, he shared his plight and informed: “I was detected with blood cancer i.e. leukemia in 2017. I have been getting treatment for the same, since then, in an Indore hospital. It used to cost me Rs 25,000 – Rs 30,000 per month.

“But, after I got to know about Ayushman Bharat and started availing the benefits of this scheme, I am getting the same treatment, free of cost. I have been getting treatment in Ahmedabad only since December 2022,” he added.

He further stated: “My hospitalisation and medical expenses are being borne by the Ayushman Bharat scheme. I have seen significant improvement in my health. Also, I don’t have to shell out a single rupee for the treatment.”

He said that he is also getting the medicines from the hospital free of cost.

“This scheme is very beneficial for those families who can’t afford their medical expenses. We are very thankful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His governance should continue for more years as he has done a lot for the poor and marginalised,” he remarked.

Notably, PM-JAY is the largest health assurance scheme in the world, offering secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation benefits of up to Rs 5 lakh per family annually. The focus of AB PM-JAY scheme is to attain universal health coverage for all citizens.

In September this year, the Union Cabinet approved expansion of the scheme, offering health insurance to senior citizens aged 70 and above. This move will provide free health coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per family, regardless of income, benefiting around 6 crore senior citizens across 4.5 crore families.
