Two stabbed to death in separate incidents; Delhi Police launches probe

New Delhi, Jan 15 (IANS) In a alarming reflection of the law and order situation in the national Capital, two people were stabbed to death in separate incidents in Delhi, officials said on Thursday, adding that investigations are underway in both cases.

In the first incident, a notorious criminal was stabbed to death in the Kalyanpuri area of East Delhi. The deceased has been identified as Mukesh, aged around 40.

Police said he was found lying in a pool of blood near a public toilet in Block-18 of Kalyanpuri.

Mukesh was rushed to the nearby Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

East District Deputy Commissioner of Police Abhishek Dhania said a case of murder has been registered in connection with the incident.

“The police are making efforts to identify the attackers with the help of CCTV cameras installed in the area,” DCP Dhania said, adding that investigators are also questioning family members of the deceased to establish the sequence of events leading to the killing.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further investigation is underway after registering a murder case, police said.

The deceased’s wife, Monica, told police that Mukesh had left home after dinner at around 10.00 p.m. on Wednesday. She said the family received information about an hour later that he had been found injured near the public toilet in Block-18 of Kalyanpuri.

Mukesh’s uncle, Raju, said the family was informed that he had been stabbed and taken to hospital, where he later died during treatment. He said the family wants the police to take strict legal action in the matter.

Police said efforts are being made to identify and apprehend the accused, and further details in the case are awaited.

In a separate incident, a 23-year-old man, identified as Ranjan, was stabbed to death on Wednesday night in the JJ Colony area of Bawana in north Delhi.

Police said an investigation has been initiated in this case as well.

Further details in the Bawana incident are awaited as police continue their probe.

The latest incidents come close on the heels of a series of violent stabbings on New Year’s evening, when three people were killed in back-to-back attacks in Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar, Mongolpuri and Sultanpuri areas.

Those incidents claimed the lives of a tailor, a rickshaw driver and a 15-year-old boy, raising concerns over street violence in the national Capital.

Speaking to reporters after their meeting in the capital of Panama on Wednesday (India time), Castaneda said, “The message which they have conveyed has been very clearly understood by us”.

“Panama wants to stand with India in this campaign for peace, and we hope that we are able to defeat terrorism,” she said.

“We have spoken about these issues in detail, and this will help us understand each other better in India’s fight against terrorism,” she added.

The delegation was in this Central American nation on the third leg of its mission to spread India’s message of zero tolerance for terrorism in the aftermath of the religiously motivated massacre of 26 people at Pahalgam by Pakistan-linked terrorists.

India launched Operation Sindoor to strike at nine centres of terrorism in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). Islamabad launched attacks on targets in India, including temples, gurdwaras, and a convent, escalating the conflict.

Senior Senators Edwin Vergara and Julio de la Guardia and other lawmakers were in the meeting at the National Assembly.

De la Guardia is a former ambassador to India.

Tharoor told the Panamanian lawmakers, “We had no interest in starting a war, but we felt that the terrorist actions could not go unpunished.”

“So, we conducted very carefully calibrated, precise strikes on nine locations of terrorist organisations that are already listed by the United Nations Sanctions Committee as terrorist groups,” he said.

“It was an action of retribution, not the first salvo in a long war. We just wanted to send a clear message to the terrorists,” he said.

After the “terrible crime”, India waited for two weeks to see if Pakistan would act against the terrorists, and launched Operation Sindoor only when Islamabad refused to do anything against the terrorists.

Tharoor said on X that they also met Kathy Bhiku, whom he described as a “colleague” of Castaneda.

Tharoor said that he presented Caastaneda “with a Kashmiri shawl from the place where terror had struck”, and she “reciprocated with a warrior symbol, urging India to fight on with determination”.

The delegation, which started its mission in New York, visited Guyana, where it met President Mohd Irfaan Ali, Prime Minister Mark Anthony Phillips, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, and other leaders and members of the media and diaspora.

From here, it will go to Colombia and Brazil, before returning to the US on June 3 for meetings in Washington.

Reflecting the national consensus against terrorism, the team is headed by Tharoor from the opposition Congress Party and includes Shambhavi of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), Sarfaraz Ahmad of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, and Milind Murli Deora of the Shiv Sena as welll as Shashank Mani Tripathi, Bhubaneswar Kalita, and Tejasvi Surya of the BJP, and GM Harish Balayogi of the Telugu Desam Party, a National Democratic Alliance partner.

After landing in Panama, Kalita said on X, the team is “reaffirming India’s united stand against terrorism and commitment to global peace. Democratic solidarity and international cooperation (are) at the forefront.

Tharoor told the members of Panama’s National Assembly that the MPs came from different political backgrounds and different parts of India, “but we are united in the purpose of our mission”.

The Indian parliamentarians visited the Indian Cultural Centre in Panama City and, Tharoor said, they “offered devotions at the beautiful temple there”.

“It was moving to see our Muslim colleague Sarfraz Ahmed join his Hindu and Sikh colleagues at the temple,” he added.

Regional parties form united front to highlight voice of indigenous people in Northeast

New Delhi/Agartala, Nov 4 (IANS) The National People’s Party (NPP), the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), along with other regional parties and leaders from the Northeastern states, on Tuesday announced to form a new regional political front under a single banner to highlight the causes of the indigenous people of the region.

NPP supremo and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that a nine-member committee has been constituted to work out the details of the proposed common platform within 45 days. NPP’s National Working President J. M. Sangma will be the convener, while former BJP national spokesperson and former Nagaland Minister Mmhonlumo Kikon will serve as the member secretary of the committee.

Representatives of all the parties joining the proposed platform will be members of the panel.

A joint statement was issued on Tuesday during a media briefing held at the Constitution Club of India in New Delhi.

The joint statement was signed by Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP’s National President Conrad K. Sangma, TMP supremo Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, Mmhonlumo Kikon, and Daniel Langthasa, founder of the People’s Party from Assam’s Dima Hasao district.

Reading out the statement, CM Sangma said that leaders from different Northeastern states have come together to make a “collective and historic announcement” to form a united political entity that truly represents the people of the region.

“For too long, we, the younger generation of leaders from the Northeast, have spoken about the same issues and concerns of our people, but from different platforms and political spaces. We have realised that our strength lies in unity, and that it is time to give our people one collective voice,” he said.

The NPP chief added that taking inspiration from the vision and legacy of great leaders who fought selflessly for the identity and development of the region, “we have resolved to carry forward their ideals by coming together under a shared vision for the future of the Northeast.”

The Chief Minister said that Tuesday’s announcement marks the first step towards building this common platform. He said the nine-member committee will deliberate on the future course of action, including the modalities and structure of the proposed political entity.

“Our united effort is guided by a simple conviction that the people of the Northeast deserve to be heard, respected, and represented through a strong, unified, and indigenous political voice at the national level,” the NPP head said.

He, however, categorically stated that they remain part of the present Central government.

Former Tripura royal scion and TMP’s founder-chief Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma said that the Northeast region requires articulation and cohesiveness. He pointed out that the region shares long international borders with several countries and can collectively raise issues such as atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh.

The eight Northeastern states share a 5,437-km international boundary with China, Myanmar, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Nepal, much of which remains unfenced, rugged, and porous.

“We have no personal or political interests. Our only concern is the interests and issues of the people of the Northeast region under a collective leadership. We will work together. We are not against any party or individual, and we will not fight against anyone,” Debbarma told the media.

The TMP is an ally of the ruling BJP in Tripura, while the NPP is a constituent of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The NPP, the only national party from the Northeast, has its political base and MLAs in Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh, besides its home state, Meghalaya.

The BJP, with two MLAs, supports the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government led by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.

Ranchi’s Sirmatoli turns into fortress amid tribal agitation over flyover ramp

Ranchi, March 30 (IANS) The controversy surrounding the construction of a flyover ramp near the Sarna Sthal, a sacred site for tribals in Sirmatoli, Ranchi, has deepened. Thousands of tribals on Sunday gathered at the site demanding the complete removal of the ramp, which they claim infringes upon their religious space and traditions.

With protests intensifying, authorities have deployed a heavy contingent of police and security forces. The entire area has been barricaded, effectively turning it into a security fortress.

The dispute has been simmering for weeks. A massive protest was witnessed on March 22 when a complete shutdown of Ranchi was observed. The protesters argue that the ramp, part of an under-construction flyover, obstructs access to the Sarna Sthal and diminishes the space required for major religious gatherings.

Sirmatoli houses Ranchi’s largest Sarna Sthal, a site of immense cultural and spiritual importance for tribals. Every year, grand processions from Ranchi and surrounding areas culminate here during Sarhul, the community’s biggest festival. This year, Sarhul falls on April 1, making the dispute even more sensitive.

Tribal organisations claim that the flyover ramp, built very close to the sacred site, will disrupt religious rituals, including the massive processions that gather here during Sarhul. They argue that it is not just an issue of encroachment but a direct attack on their faith and heritage.

In response to the growing agitation, the district administration took partial corrective action by deciding to shorten the ramp. A significant portion was demolished, and debris removal is still ongoing as of Sunday. However, this action has failed to pacify the protesters.

Slogans demanding the demolition of the entire structure continue to echo through the streets. Some protesters have warned that if the administration does not take further action, they will dismantle the ramp themselves.

Given the rising tensions, Sirmatoli Chowk has been turned into a high-security zone, with Ranchi DIG-cum-SSP Chandan Kumar Sinha, City SP Rajkumar, SDM Utkarsh Kumar, and officers from various police stations mobilised in the area.

The protest is being spearheaded by tribal organisations under the banner of ‘Sirmatoli Bachao Morcha.’ Last week, these groups staged a dramatic demonstration in Ranchi, carrying out a symbolic funeral procession of all tribal MLAs and ministers, including the Chief Minister, accusing them of failing to protect their religious rights.
