Untimely Ratha Yatra celebrations: Sudarsan Pattnaik writes to Odisha CM seeking intervention

Bhubaneswar, May 23 (IANS) Renowned sand artist and Padma Shri awardee Sudarsan Pattnaik on Friday wrote to Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, urging the state government to take steps towards standardising the dates of the Ratha Yatra celebrated globally, and to intervene in the continued use of the term “Jagannath Dham” for the newly constructed Digha Jagannath Temple in West Bengal.

In his letter, Pattnaik expressed concern over the growing practice of organizations, particularly the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), conducting Snana Yatra and Ratha Yatra celebrations abroad on dates different from those followed by Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri.

“While we truly appreciate their devotion and enthusiasm, I humbly appeal to you to kindly take appropriate steps to encourage these organisations to observe these sacred festivals in alignment with the traditional dates as per the Puri Jagannath Temple calendar,” urged Pattnaik in his letter.

He further noted that although the temple administration had raised the issue with these groups earlier, the variations still persist.

“Ratha Yatra is not merely a festival; it is a profound spiritual tradition and a vital symbol of our cultural identity. Celebrating it on a unified date across the world will strengthen the spiritual bond among Jagannath devotees and uphold the sanctity of this divine occasion,” Pattnaik wrote.

The sand artist also welcomed the Odisha CM’s earlier outreach to his West Bengal counterpart regarding the naming of a project in Digha as “Jagannath Dham”.

However, as the name had not yet been changed, he requested further intervention to protect the cultural and religious sanctity associated with Lord Jagannath.

Thanking the Chief Minister for his efforts in promoting Odisha’s rich heritage, Pattnaik concluded his letter with a humble appeal to safeguard Mahaprabhu Jagannath’s legacy both within and beyond the borders of the state.

It is worth noting that ISKCON has recently courted controversy with the announcement to organize Rath Yatra programmes in London on different dates.

IMA’s new certification for hospitals to promote best practices in antimicrobial usage

New Delhi, Dec 27 (IANS) In a bid to combat rising antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has launched the first of its kind globally “IMA AMR Smart Hospital” certification initiative that seeks to promote accountability and best practices in antimicrobial usage.

Antimicrobial resistance, the resistance of bacteria, fungi, and parasites to antimicrobial agents, has emerged as one of the gravest threats to global health.

It is a leading cause of death worldwide, with 4.9 million fatalities attributed to AMR in 2019 alone. In India, the situation is particularly dire, with 297,000 deaths directly attributable to AMR and over one million deaths associated with AMR in the same year.

“The rising prevalence of AMR is undoing nearly a century of medical advancements. If not addressed, we will be faced with an era where even common infections become untreatable and fatal,” said Dr. Narendra Saini, Chairman of the IMA AMR Standing Committee.

India’s antibiotic prescription rate of 412 for every 1,000 people is alarmingly high — a factor that contributes significantly to the development of resistance among infectious pathogens.

The innovative programme launched by IMA aims to combat the rising threat of AMR by implementing advanced Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) strategies in healthcare facilities across India.

This initiative focuses on strengthening AMS and IPC activities, which include monitoring AMR patterns, improving antimicrobial stewardship, and preventing the spread of resistant pathogens within healthcare facilities.

“Our hospitals are reservoirs of pathogens, making it imperative to implement strong IPC and AMS protocols. With this initiative, we aim to set benchmarks for safe and effective healthcare delivery in the fight against AMR,” said Dr. Anilkumar J Nayak, Honorary Secretary General of IMA.

The pilot phase of the project witnessed enthusiastic participation from hospitals across the country. Registration forms were distributed to more than 1,700 IMA branches, and through a rigorous selection process, hospitals from diverse regions and healthcare settings were chosen for participation.

During the pilot, four hospitals were awarded the certification — KD Hospital, in Gujarat; Mahavir Jaipuria Rajasthan Hospital in Jaipur; Sehgal Neo Hospital in Delhi; and Ananthapuri Hospital and Research Institute in Kerala.

“These hospitals have set a high standard in the fight against AMR, showcasing what can be achieved through robust AMS and IPC practices,” said Saini.

The IMA AMR Smart Hospital Project is a global pioneer, offering a replicable and scalable model to address AMR at the institutional level. It aligns with global health priorities, including the Sustainable Development Goals, by promoting responsible use of antibiotics and preventing the spread of resistant pathogens.

“The fight against AMR is not just a medical challenge but a societal responsibility. Together, we can ensure a safer and healthier future for generations to come,” Saini said.

Kamra row: Raut demands action against vandals, police

Mumbai, March 24 (IANS) Shiv Sena MP, Sanjay Raut, on Monday strongly criticised the vandalism at the Mumbai hotel where the shoot of comedian Kunal Kamra’s stand-up comedy show had taken place, saying that Sunday’s vandalism is a sign that Maharashtra has a weak Home Minister.

Sanjay Raut demanded action against those involved in the vandalism.

Raut appealed to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the home portfolio, to leave charge of the department.

“Is Fadnavis not up to the task of handling the Home Ministry, or is he not being allowed to work? Fadnavis says that he will not spare the rioters in Nagpur, but damage has also been done by the rioters in Khar last night. Will he spare them? Will he recover the damage done by the rioters or not?” he asked.

He further stated that the Mumbai Police Commissioner should be transferred immediately.

“Maharashtra has now become a ‘goonda raj’. Some people have planned to turn entire Maharashtra into Beed,” he added.

Beed is hogging national headlines for the brutal murder of sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh and also for lapses in law and order.

“What is happening in Parbhani? What happened in Nagpur? Now, in front of your eyes, a podcaster’s studio has been destroyed in the state capital. What were the cops doing?” he asked.

Sanjay Raut said he wanted to know whether censorship and Emergency had been imposed in Maharashtra.

“If an Emergency has been imposed, tell us clearly, yes, we have imposed an Emergency. Artists, writers and literary figures, comedians will not be allowed to criticise, will not be allowed to write or do satire. The government should say this clearly,” he said.

“Action should also be taken against the Assistant Commissioner of Police and senior police officers of the police station under whose jurisdiction this vandalism took place. Maharashtra is being vilified in the country in terms of law and order.

“Also take action against those who give threats. People in politics should tolerate sarcastic criticism. If Fadnavis wants to maintain his reputation, he should take action against the rioters,” Sanjay Raut said.

Indore to set up nation’s first PPP green waste processing plant

New Delhi, March 18 (IANS) Under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, Indore is poised to launch the country’s first PPP green waste processing plant that will recycle wooden waste and branches of large trees to produce pellets that can serve as an alternative to coal, an official said on Tuesday.

The facility will not only process green waste but also generate revenue, with the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) earning nearly Rs 3,000 per tonne in royalty for supplying wood and branches, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

Built on 55,000 square feet of land in Bicholi Hapsi, the plant will recycle wood and branches to produce wooden pellets.

Wooden pellets, produced from green waste, are utilised across various industries, including the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), where they serve as an eco-friendly alternative for energy production and other applications.

Branches of large trees in Indore will be redirected to the Green Waste Processing Plant at City Forest, where they will be repurposed into valuable products. In addition, green waste generated from the premises of major institutions will be directly collected and sent to the facility, with a fixed fee structure in place, said the statement.

Every day, Indore, a key financial hub of Madhya Pradesh, generates nearly 30 tonnes of green waste — wood, branches, leaves, and flowers. As the seasons change, especially during autumn, this volume soars to 60 to 70 tonnes.

The goal of this initiative is to efficiently manage green waste, promote environmental sustainability, and create additional revenue streams for the municipal corporation, said the statement.

“It will also play a crucial role in improving the Air Quality Index (AQI). By improving waste management practices, this initiative will enhance hygiene, reduce pollution, and curb the unnecessary burning of waste, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment,” said the statement.

“This initiative aligns with the vision of garbage-free cities under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, advancing efforts towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable urban environment,” said the statement.
