Visiting UAE Commander briefed on ‘Operation Sindoor’

New Delhi, Oct 27 (IANS) Major General Yousef Maayouf Saeed Al Hallami, Commander, United Arab Emirates Land Forces, was on Monday given a detailed briefing on ‘Operation Sindoor’, an official said.

The visiting Commander was also briefed by DG Information System and the Army Design Bureau on India’s Defence capabilities and the Artificial Intelligence road map for the Indian Army.

The Commander of the UAE Land Forces is on a two-day official visit to India from October 27 to October 28. On arrival, Maj Gen Al Hallami was accorded a ceremonial welcome.

The briefing on ‘Operation Sindoor’ for the visiting Commander came close on the heels of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh describing it as an embodiment of India’s military prowess and national character.

During the Army Commanders’ Conference in Jaisalmer last week, the Defence Minister said the Operation was a demonstration by the soldiers that their strength lies not only in weapons but also in their ethical discipline and strategic clarity.

“Operation Sindoor will go down in history as not just a military operation, but also a symbol of the nation’s courage and restraint. The action taken by our forces against terrorists was in keeping with both policy precision and human dignity. The operation isn’t over. Our mission for peace will continue as long as even a single terrorist mindset remains alive,” he said.

The UAE Commander’s visit is set to enhance bilateral military cooperation and explore new avenues for collaboration, particularly in the areas of training and capability enhancement, said an official statement.

Maj Gen Al Hallami’s visit underscores the continued efforts of both nations to further strengthen and deepen their longstanding Defence partnership.

The visiting Commander will lay a wreath at the National War Memorial on Tuesday. Later in the day, he will visit the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and receive a detailed briefing on various indigenous weapon and equipment platforms.

He will also interact with Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development, and Chairman of DRDO.

The Commander will also interact with representatives of Indian Defence industries to discuss issues of mutual interest.

Maj Gen Al Hallami’s visit marks an important milestone in the Defence cooperation between UAE and India.

It will further solidify the already robust Defence ties, paving the way for a stronger, future-ready partnership in military engagement and regional security cooperation, said the statement.

New Delhi, May 24 (IANS) Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has asserted that a new Northeast is rising under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking at the Riding Northeast Investor Summit at the Bharat Mandapam held in New Delhi, the Union Minister emphasised that a “New Bharat is dawning with a resurgent Northeast at its heart”.

Minister Sonowal highlighted the transformation of the Northeast Region (NER) over the last decade, attributing this resurgence to the sustained leadership of Prime Minister Modi.

“Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, the Northeast has undergone an era-defining transformation. What was once perceived as remote and isolated is now rapidly becoming India’s gateway to Southeast Asia,” he said.

“The region is not just a part of India’s growth story — it is now a major chapter in it.”

He pointed to a landmark figure — more than 700 visits by Cabinet Ministers to the Northeast in the past decade — as proof of the Union government’s sustained focus on the region’s development.

Minister Sonowal stressed the government’s commitment to inclusive infrastructure, particularly in maritime and inland waterways, which are reshaping the economic landscape of the region.

“Inland waterways are one of the most promising frontiers of development for the Northeast,” he said.

“We now have more than 20 notified National Waterways in the region. The Jalvahak scheme is being promoted to catalyse multi-modal connectivity, create logistics hubs, and boost cargo movement. Infra development along these waterways will unlock new corridors of economic activity and generate large-scale employment.”

Highlighting India’s logistics advantage, Minister Sonowal noted that 90 per cent of the country’s trade by volume and 70 per cent by value moves through shipping, with inland waterways under the IBPR (Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route) and Sittwe Port in Myanmar will act as an emerging game changers in unfolding transformative transportation unlocking value.

In a nod to the region’s rich talent pool, the Union Minister detailed new initiatives in maritime skill development targeting youth from the Northeast, preparing them for careers in port operations, vessel management and logistics.

Minister Sonowal also emphasised the immense potential for “Heal in India” medical tourism in the NER, leveraging the region’s natural serenity, wellness traditions, and rising healthcare infrastructure.

“The market potential of the Northeast is not limited to domestic consumption,” he said.

“It connects directly with Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal (BBIN) nations, offering investors unparalleled access to more than 600 million consumers in neighbouring economies,” he added.

Indian Air Force to receive first Tejas Mk-1A fighter jet tomorrow

New Delhi, Oct 16 (IANS) The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to receive its first Tejas Mk-1A fighter jet on Thursday, marking a major milestone in India’s indigenous defence manufacturing programme.

The aircraft, built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), will be handed over to the IAF at a ceremony in Nashik, Maharashtra, in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday.

The state-of-the-art Tejas Mk-1A is an upgraded version of the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) and will replace the recently retired MiG-21 fleet.

The IAF phased out the MiG-21s on September 26 after over six decades of service.

The Tejas Mk-1A features advanced avionics, a modern radar system, improved weapon capabilities, and a cutting-edge electronic warfare suite. With a top speed exceeding 2,200 km/h, it is designed for enhanced combat performance and operational flexibility.

HAL has confirmed that all flight and system tests of the Tejas Mk-1A have been successfully completed. The aircraft will carry a range of indigenous weapon systems, including the BrahMos missile, underscoring India’s growing self-reliance in defence technology.

The first batch of Tejas Mk-1A aircraft is expected to be deployed at the Nal Air Base in Bikaner, Rajasthan, near the Pakistan border.

Last month, on September 25, the Ministry of Defence signed a Rs 62,370 crore contract with HAL for the supply of 97 Tejas Mk-1A fighter jets — 68 single-seater and 29 twin-seater trainer variants. The deal is expected to significantly boost the IAF’s operational strength.

HAL officials said production of the LCA Mk-1A is gaining pace. The company recently received four GE-404 jet engines from the American manufacturer General Electric, with a total of 12 expected by the end of this fiscal year. These engines will power the first batch of aircraft.

According to HAL, more than 65 per cent of the components used in the Tejas Mk-1A are indigenously produced, reflecting India’s commitment to the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Improved engine supply chains are expected to accelerate deliveries of the aircraft to the IAF over the coming years.

Madhya Pradesh on alert for another spell of heavy rain, thunderstorms

Bhopal, Aug 10 (IANS) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a statewide alert for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning across Madhya Pradesh, warning of potential disruptions and hazards in both urban and rural areas.

The alert comes amid intensified monsoon activity triggered by cyclonic circulation and a developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.

Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is expected at isolated locations in Vidisha, Raisen, Sehore, Dewas, Ashoknagar, Damoh, Sagar, Tikamgarh, and Niwari districts.

Meanwhile, thunderstorm activity is likely at several places including Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Rewa, and over 40 other districts. Meteorologists have cautioned that the rainfall may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, localized flash floods, and disruption of rural transportation, especially on kachcha roads.

Gusty winds and lightning pose risks of tree fall, power outages, and injuries to outdoor workers and livestock. Vulnerable kutcha houses and temporary shelters may also face structural damage.

According to Bhopal center of Indian meteorological department officials, districts such as Narmadapuram, Betul, and Harda could receive up to 4.5 inches of rain within 24 hours. Rainfall intensity is expected to increase further from August 13 onward, as a fresh low-pressure system develops over the Bay of Bengal, potentially bringing continuous showers through mid-August.

The eastern divisions of Jabalpur, Sagar, Shahdol, and Rewa have already recorded 37 per cent above-average rainfall this season, while western divisions including Bhopal, Indore, and Ujjain are 27 per cent above normal.

Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors during lightning activity, avoid waterlogged zones, and follow local advisories.

Farmers and rural workers are advised to suspend outdoor tasks during peak storm hours and secure livestock.

Disaster response teams have been placed on alert, and district administrations are monitoring vulnerable zones for emergency intervention. With monsoon systems remaining active, further advisories are expected in the coming days.
