Why Kajol believes she can do justice to comedy in times of dull humor

Mumbai, June 17 (IANS) Bollywood actress Kajol, who is gearing up for the release of her upcoming horror film “Maa,” shared her thoughts on the current state of comedy in cinema.

Reflecting on the lack of originality and depth in today’s humor, the actress expressed a desire to return to the genre—provided the script is intelligent and well-written. She believes that her instinct for subtle and layered comedy could offer something refreshing in an era dominated by repetitive punchlines and mass-appeal jokes. Speaking to IANS, Kajol expressed her desire to return to comedy—provided the content is strong enough.

She emphasized that comedy is inherently subjective—what makes one person laugh might leave another unaffected. According to her, the current landscape of comedy in films often caters to the masses at large, rather than presenting a unique or thoughtful perspective. The ‘Dilwale’ actress also pointed out that the same kind of humor and punchlines are being reused repeatedly, leading to a lack of freshness in today’s comic narratives.

“I would like to do a comedy. I think it’ll be really cool, and I think I’ll do a fabulous job of it. I think comedy is something that is very subjective. What makes me laugh might not make you laugh, and what I find very funny might not be funny to you. So, I think comedy is subjective, and I think most of the films being made today are created keeping an entire mass audience in mind, rather than any particular viewpoint. So yeah, it’s changed in that sense. But those same punches are being used time and again. So no, I would like to see a really, really—maybe very, very—well-written comedy. “I haven’t seen that in a long time,” shared Kajol.

The 50-year-old actress also reflected on cinematic gems of the past and praised the intelligent humor found in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s films. She described them as not just funny but also smart and full of heart, lamenting the absence of such well-written comedies in recent times.

While she didn’t name any personal favorites from contemporary films, Kajol mentioned her preference for subtle humor, dark comedy, and satire—genres she believes offer a richer comic experience.

“I thought the Hrishikesh Mukherjee films were so intelligent. They were really intelligent and really funny. I love that kind of filmmaking, and I wish more films like that were being made today. So, if you ask me—since we’re talking about comedy—about one or two of my favorite comedy films from then till now… honestly, I can’t really name any. I just can’t remember right now. But I definitely agree that there’s a subtler kind of comedy that I find funnier—dark comedy, satire, all of that,” the actress explained.

Work-wise, Kajol is currently busy promoting her first-ever horror film, “Maa.” Directed by Vishal Furia, the film is set to release in theatres on June 27.

Speaking with IANS, Neena said, “Once we came on the set for shoot as the production team called us on the set. We were told to go back in the van, and that it will take some time. So I saw Dada in the hall where the shoot was going on. He went in a corner. And he sat there somewhere. So I asked, ‘What happened to Dada?’ The assistant said, ‘He wants to think’ So suddenly he wanted to think about something (laughs)”.

The actress further mentioned that Anurag has this whole script in his head and the best part of working with him is that he improvises on the spot.

“So, while we were given the lines and we remembered them and then we were saying and one or two takes were done, suddenly he would say, ‘Neena, do it differently. How about you do it this way or that way?’. And I was like, ‘Oh man, this is a very good idea, why didn’t I think of this?’. It’s like that, I’m giving an example. So, I had a lot of dreams come true when he called me for the film. I said, ‘I don’t want to hear anything, I don’t want to do anything, I’ll just work with you’, it’s like that. So, it’s great fun working with him also”, she added.

Kajol sends warm birthday wishes to the ‘OG dancing queen’ Madhuri Dixit

Mumbai, May 15 (IANS) Bollywood actress Kajol took to social media to wish Madhuri Dixit on her birthday, calling her the ‘original dancing queen.’

On Thursday, the ‘Diwale’ actress took to her Instagram stories and shared a smiling picture of the Dhak Dhak girl, writing, “Happy Birthday to the OG dancing queen…May you always stun us with your grace on stage and off of it @maduridixitnene.” In the image, Dixit is seen wearing a heavily embellished red saree and smiling while looking away from the camera.

Despite being two of Bollywood’s most iconic actresses, Kajol and Madhuri Dixit have never appeared together on screen in a film. Not to forget, Kajol made headlines last year when she recreated Madhuri Dixit’s iconic look from the blockbuster film “Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!.” Her outfit closely resembled Madhuri’s memorable appearance in the song “Didi Tera Devar Deewana.” Tagging Dixit, Kajol captioned the photo, “Hum Aapke Hai Kaun… Ode to the OG @madhuridixitnene #diditeradevardeewana #saree.”

Meanwhile, Madhuri Dixit turned 58 on May 15. On her special day, the actress received heartwarming wishes from her family members, fans, and celebrities on social media. Madhuri’s husband, Dr. Shriram Nene, also penned a sweet birthday note for her. He shared a series of photos featuring the couple and their kids and wrote: “Happy Birthday to the one who’s brightened our lives in every way You’ve made everything lighter, warmer, and better—just by being you. Work-wise, Madhuri Dixit last appeared on the big screen in “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3,” which was released in 2024. The horror-comedy featured her in a pivotal role alongside Kartik Aaryan, Vidya Balan, and Tripti Dimri.

Director Abishan Jeevinth calls Telugu star Nani “a humble and grounded person”

Chennai, June14 (IANS) Floored by not just Nani’s careful observation of his recently released superhit film ‘Tourist Family’ but also by his humility and down-to-earth attitude, director Abishan Jeevinth on Saturday called the Telugu star a “humble and grounded person.”

Taking to his timeline on X to share a picture of him meeting Nani, Abishan Jeevinth said, “What a day! Truly honoured to have met you, @NameisNani sir. You’re such a humble and grounded person. The way you spoke about the film in such detail made it more special for me. Thank you.”

It may be recalled that Telugu star Nani had recently expressed his appreciation for Abishan Jeevinth’s superhit film.

Taking to his X timeline, Nani had said, “Simple, heart warming films with lot of goodness is what we deserve and #TouristFamily delivers just that.Thanking the whole cast and crew who made this gem of a film. Much needed.”

Abishan Jeevinth, the young director, who was overwhelmed by the appreciation from the star, had replied to Nani saying, “Sir, this was totally unexpected! Thank you so much for the encouragement — your tweet truly made our day! We’re feeling extra grateful and super motivated!”

Prior to Nani, several top actors from various industries have congratulated Abishan. In fact, the young director had turned emotional as he disclosed that something inside him had got healed when actor Suriya called him by name and said how much he liked his film.

Taking to his timeline on X to share pictures of him and his team meeting actor Suriya, the young director, whose Tamil film ‘Tourist Family’ is setting cash registers to ring at the box office, wrote,”Don’t know how to explain it… but something inside me healed today. @Suriya_offl sir called my name and said how much he liked #touristfamily.”

The director went on to say, “There’s a boy in me still watching v1000 (Vaaranam Aayiram) for the 100th time. Today, that boy is crying with gratitude. Thank you sir!”

It may be recalled that prior to Suriya, Superstar Rajinikanth, ace director S S Rajamouli and actor and director Dhanush too had congratulated Abishan.

‘Tourist Family’, which hit screens on May 1, is a feel-good family entertainer that features Sasikumar and Simran in the lead. It also features Yogi Babu, Mithun Jayashankar, Kamalesh, M.S. Bhaskar, Ramesh Thilak, Bhagavathi Perumal (Bucks), Ilango Kumaravel, and Sreeja Ravi among others.

Aravind Viswanathan is the cinematographer of the film, which has music by Shaan Rahman. The film’s editing is by Bharath Vikraman, and art direction is by Rajkamal.
