Absconding Trinamool leader arrested in Chennai for attacking Bengal businessman

Kolkata, Sep 13 (IANS) Trinamool Congress leader and deputy head of Bishpur Panchayat in Hingalganj in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, Shahidul Sheikh, who was absconding in a criminal case involving a businessman, was arrested in Chennai, police said on Sunday.

Sheikh was accused of being involved in the incident of attacking a local businessman and setting his shop on fire. The police said that Sheikh, who had been absconding since the incident, was finally arrested in Chennai on Saturday night.

According to a senior police officer of the Basirhat Police District, the Trinamool leader will be brought to Hasnabad on Sunday evening. The police will produce him in the Basirhat Sub-division Court on Monday. They will likely seek the accused’s custody from the court.

According to the police, on May 18, Trinamool leader Sheikh and his team were accused of beating up Nitai Das, a businessman from Bailani Bazar in Hingalganj. Allegedly, Nitai’s shop was burnt down that night. As a result, Das suffered a loss of several lakhs of rupees. After investigating the incident, the Hasnabad police station started searching for Sheikh.

Not only this incident, but a case was also filed earlier against him at the police station on multiple charges, including embezzling money from the panchayat, extorting money in the name of providing houses under the Awas Yojana, bombing and issuing threats.

The police had been searching for him after the latest case was filed. After receiving information from a source, officers from Hasnabad police station went to Chennai. They arrested Sheikh in a joint operation with the Special Operation Group (SOG).

“The phone’s tower location was tracked. Finally, the police came to know that he was hiding in Chennai. After that, a team from Hasnabad police station left for Chennai to arrest him. He was arrested on Saturday night. The arrested person will be produced before a court in Chennai today, Sunday, to seek his transit remand. After that, he will be brought to Hasnabad police station. The police are investigating his role in the incident. A search is on for others who were also involved in the incident,” said the police officer.

Pakistan violates ceasefire on LoC in J&K’s Keran sector, India responds

Srinagar, Jan 21 (IANS) The Pakistan Army violated the ceasefire on the Line of Control (LoC) overnight in the Keran sector of J&K’s Kupwara district, officials said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday when Rashtriya Rifles soldiers came under attack.

“The incident occurred when troops from the 6 Rashtriya Rifles were setting up high-tech surveillance cameras in the Keran Bala area to strengthen border security and fill blind spots along the LoC. Pakistani troops fired two rounds of small arms to disrupt the installation of surveillance cameras,” an official said.

“In response, Indian forces fired a single calibrated shot. No casualties were reported from either side in this exchange of fire,” he added,

“Following the skirmish, the Indian Army launched a cordon and search operation in the dense forest area, as the army suspects that the fire could have been a diversion for an infiltration bid”, officials said.

Pakistan Army and Pakistan Rangers have been violating the ceasefire on the LoC and the international border (IB) in J&K either to facilitate infiltration of terrorists into the Union Territory or disrupt installation of surveillance equipment along the border.

J&K has a 740-km-long LoC in Baramulla, Kupwara, and Bandipora districts of the Kashmir Valley and in Poonch, Rajouri and partly in the Jammu district of the Jammu division.

The 240-km-long IB is situated in the Samba, Kathua, and Jammu districts of the Jammu division.

The LoC is guarded by the army, while the IB is guarded by the Border Security Force (BSF).

The duties of the deployed army and the BSF include anti-infiltration operations, checking of trans border smuggling and drone activities initiated from the Pakistani side of the border.

J&K Police and the other security forces carry out anti-terrorist operations in the hinterland. These operations are aimed at terrorists, their overground workers (OGWs) and sympathisers.

Bengal to witness violence if genuine voter names deleted after SIR: Trinamool leader

Kolkata, Oct 10 (IANS) Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member and former West Bengal Minister, Partha Bhowmick, said on Friday that the state will witness violence if the name of a single genuine voter is deleted from the voters’ list after the Election Commission of India (ECI)-proposed special intensive revision (SIR).

He also gave a call to the people that they should chase and detain the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in different regions of the state in case the name of a single genuine voter is deleted from the voters’ list.

“I am telling you to chase and detain BJP leaders in different localities in case the name of a single genuine voter is deleted from the voters’ list. The SIR is not anyone’s parental property that it could be used to delete names of genuine voters from the voters’ list. If they try to delete names of genuine voters from the voters’ list, the state will be on the boil under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee,” Bhowmik said while addressing a local-level Trinamool Congress leaders and party workers at Bagda in North 24 Parganas district.

His words of caution sounded like a continuation of similar caution issued by Chief Minister Banerjee while addressing the media persons at the State Secretariat on Thursday afternoon.

“I will not tolerate it if the names of people from any particular community in the state are deleted from the voters’ list because of this unnecessary hurry. I am asking them (ECI) not to play with fire. A crisis-like situation because of a natural calamity is still prevailing in West Bengal. The houses of several people have been washed away because of the floods. In such a situation, from where will they furnish the necessary documents for the SIR? Some are on vacation because of the ongoing festive season. How will they furnish the documents?” the Chief Minister said on Thursday.

Since the beginning, Trinamool Congress had been opposing the SIR and claimed that it was a political ploy by the BJP and the Union government to impose the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in West Bengal.

On the other hand, the BJP had claimed that Trinamool Congress and Chief Minister Banerjee were opposing the SIR out of fear that the names of illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya voters would be deleted from the voters’ list.

The last time the SIR was conducted in West Bengal was in 2002.

Maharashtra govt forms SIT to probe murder of Beed sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh

Mumbai, Jan 1 (IANS) The Maharashtra government on Wednesday formed a special investigation team (SIT) headed by IPS officer Basavraj Teli to investigate a brutal killing of Massajog sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh from Beed district which took place in December last year.

Teli is the head of the Economic Offences Wing of the CID. All the officers in the SIT are from Beed district. The current investigating officer DSP Anil Gujar will also be in the investigation team.

Apart from Gujar, the other members of the SIT include Vijay Singh Shivlal Jonwal, assistant police inspector, Local Crime Branch, Beed, Mahesh Vighne, sub inspector, Local Crime Branch, Beed, Anand Shankar Shinde, sub inspector Kej, Tulshiram Jagtap, assistant sub inspector, Manoj Rajendra Wagh,police constable, Chandrakant S Kalkute, police naik, Balasaheb Devidas Akhabare, police naik and Santosh Bhagwanrao Gitte, police constable.

The Santosh Deshmukh murder case is currently being investigated by the CID and so far more than 150 people have been questioned in this case. The investigation is being conducted in connection with the links between the extortion of Rs 2 crore and the murder.

The CID team is checking all the call records, CDRs on a war footing.

The CID has summoned three more people for questioning in this case. Some of the accused in this murder case are still absconding, they are also being searched by the CID.

The government’s announcement on the formation of an SIT came a day after Walmik Karad, a close associate of NCP minister Dhananjay Munde from Beed, who was wanted in extortion case linked to the murder of Santosh Deshmukh, surrendered before CID on Pune on Tuesday.

An extortion case has been registered against Karad who has been remanded in police custody for 14 days by Kej court in Beed district.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the government will not spare anyone who is guilty in this case.

“I have been saying since the first days that strict action will be taken against every accused in the Santosh Deshmukh murder case. No one has the right to commit such violence. The police will take necessary action until all the culprits are hanged,” he said.

“We will not allow the rule of goons to continue. No one can commit such violence, no one can demand ransom. Accordingly, we have accelerated the investigation and that is why Walmik Karad had to surrender. Now different teams have started working to nab the absconding accused in the murder. We will not spare any accused. All of them will be found,” said the chief minister.
