Andhra woman poisons her two children to death, dies by suicide

Amaravati, July 14 (IANS) In a tragic incident, a woman poisoned her two minor sons to death before committing suicide in Andhra Pradesh’s Palnadu district.

According to police, the incident occurred at Vittamrajupalli village in Vinukonda mandal.

Nakka Bharati (24) killed Tejesh Reddy (6) and Hemanatha Nagi Reddy (4) before hanging herself at her house.

Police suspect that she served food laced with poison to her sons on Monday night and then died by suicide.

The incident came to light on Tuesday morning. Villages informed the police and a team rushed to the spot and shifted the bodies for postmortem examination.

Family dispute is believed to have led to the tragedy. Bharati was married to Sunil Reddy, who works as driver of a milk van.

According to their neighbours, Sunil Reddy had become addicted to vices and was allegedly not taking proper care of the family. This had led to frequent fights between the husband and wife.

Police registered a case and took up further investigation.

This is the latest in a series of such tragic incidents in Telugu states. Family disputes were found to be the main cause for most of the incidents.

Earlier, a woman slit the throats of two young daughters and later attempted to kill herself by slitting her own throat. The incident had occurred on June 30 in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh.

According to police Varalakshmi killed her daughters Bhavani (3) and Chandni (four months). Family dispute led to the alleged killings and suicide attempt.

On June 13, a woman killed her two children before committing suicide. The incident had occurred in Adavi Venkatapuram village of Telangana’s Vikarabad district.

According to police, Nabanita (27) killed her son Vignesh (7) and daughter Madhupriya (5) before killing herself. She was reportedly in the grip of severe depression following a domestic dispute.

Death toll in Punjab building collapse rises to two

Chandigarh, Dec 22 (IANS) Rescuers involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Army on Sunday began the operation on the second day as a few people were believed to be trapped in the debris of a four-storey building that collapsed in Punjab’s Mohali town.

One male body was recovered on Sunday, Subdivisional Magistrate Damandeep Kaur said, adding the victim has been identified as Abhishek Dhanwal, hailing from Ambala.

Earlier, a 20-year-old woman from Himachal Pradesh died in the incident on Saturday.

According to NDRF officials, people were buried under the debris when the structure of a gym collapsed owing to digging in an adjacent building’s basement in Sector 77, officials said.

The debris of two floors has been cleared, a senior police official told the media at the disaster spot. He said they got information of two missing people but they would continue with the rescue and search operation, Senior Superintendent of Police Deepak Pareek told the media.

Drishti Verma, 20, a resident of Theog in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla district, was pulled out by rescuers and later succumbed to her injuries at a hospital, said Viraj S. Tidke, officiating Deputy Commissioner.

The police have booked the building owners — Parwinder Singh and Gagandeep Singh — under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

One column of the Army with specialist engineering equipment has been deployed for rescue operation since 7.30 p.m. on Saturday. The Western Command said the Army reacted swiftly to the rescue.

In a remarkable display of coordinated efforts, the Army columns along with the NDRF and the state rescue teams have been relentlessly working to address the crisis. The Engineer Task Force with debris clearance machine is operational at the site.

Top debris was removed and efforts are being made to reach the basement.

The officiating Deputy Commissioner said as soon as the disaster was reported in the evening, district officials rushed to the spot and started the rescue operation with the help of locals and other departments.

He said Senior Superintendent of Police Pareek was also among the first officers who arrived at the site and took the initiative to ensure the start of rescue efforts.

Tidke said the district administration sent a message to the NDRF based at Pinjore and in addition intimation to the Western Command of the Army to augment the rescue operation.

He said the district administration has been making all-out efforts to rescue every single person trapped in the debris.

He said all requisite equipment and machinery have also been made available.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has spoken with the district administration about the ongoing rescue works and directed us to make all possible efforts to rescue the victims. Also, Member of Parliament Malvinder Singh Kang and local MLA Kulwant Singh were at the site on Saturday to oversee the rescue work.

Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav also took stock of the rescue work and directed the local police to ensure the safety of victims at all costs.

Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain said the rescue work would continue till the safe return of all victims and duty magistrates Tehsildar Arjun Singh Grewal and Navpreet Singh Shergill have been deputed to assist the rescue teams and the police.

India, New Zealand to bolster maritime, aerospace & defence ties: Piyush Goyal

New Delhi, Nov 5 (IANS) Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Wednesday that a bilateral free trade agreement between India and New Zealand will not only strengthen trade and investment ties, but will also give a big message to the world that the two countries have come closer together.

Addressing the media along with the New Zealand Prime Minister, Christopher Luxon, in Auckland, Goyal elaborated on how New Zealand stands to benefit from the large market that India offers and how India stands to gain from the new innovations in New Zealand.

He also highlighted areas of greater cooperation, including the maritime sector, aerospace, defence, education, sports, and tourism, to expand the scope of the partnership between the two countries.

“I am grateful for the direction that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon are providing us to negotiate a mutually beneficial trade deal for the prosperity of our people and businesses,” Goyal said in a post on X.

The minister said that he was visiting New Zealand with the largest delegation ever from India and spoke about the huge convergence in thinking and commitment on both sides.

“We are going to work together for a better future for the people of New Zealand, for the people of India, providing new opportunities of business, creating new job opportunities, adding to the economic development of both nations as inclusive and sustainable development is at the core of our philosophy,” he said.

He underlined that from the fragile five to the top five, it’s been a relentless pursuit by India to promote ease of doing business, to attract investments through laying down the red carpet, eliminating red tape, making it easier to do business in India through fewer compliances and easier tax burdens.

“We’ve continuously been reducing taxes, both direct and indirect, through less paperwork, no more threat of criminalization of laws which threaten you with legal action for small misdemeanours,” Goyal added.

Goyal, along with New Zealand PM Luxon and Trade Minister Todd McClay, also visited the Mahatma Gandhi Centre in Auckland to pay tributes to Mahatma Gandhi.

DMK legal wing meet: ‘One Nation, One Election’ will not benefit states, say Sibal, Quraishi

Chennai, Jan 18 (IANS) Senior Supreme Court advocate Kapil Sibal and former Chief Election Commissioner of India, S.Y. Quraishi, have criticised the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, asserting that it would harm the states and erode their regional significance.

They shared their perspectives during a panel discussion at the DMK Legal Wing Conference in Chennai on Saturday.

The panel also featured senior journalist N. Ram.

The third state conference of the DMK Legal Wing was inaugurated by the party’s general secretary, Duraimurugan, at St. George’s Anglo-Indian School.

During the discussion, Kapil Sibal remarked, “India is a union of states — this is enshrined in the Preamble of our Constitution. By advancing this proposal, you are undermining the states and attempting to dismantle the foundational structure of our democracy.”

He elaborated, “One nation, one vote. One nation, one religion. One nation, one language. One nation, one political party. This is the direction you are heading towards. You are eroding the essence of our Republic.

“This idea is being forced upon us without a national debate or consultation with political parties. However, I believe the people of India will not accept this, and I am confident that Tamil Nadu will strongly oppose it.”

Sibal, who is also a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, emphasised that the ‘One Nation, One Election’ policy would negatively impact the federal structure of India.

He questioned how state governments’ performance could be fairly assessed under a uniform electoral system, given the diversity of challenges faced by individual states.

“For example, the issues in Tamil Nadu’s education sector are vastly different from those in Uttar Pradesh,” he said.

Duraimurugan, who is also Tamil Nadu’s Water Resources Minister, noted that DMK president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin would address the conference later in the evening.

Senior journalist N. Ram also voiced his concerns, criticising the Central government for promoting the policy despite lacking a clear majority.

“The union government survives only because of the support it receives from N. Chandrababu Naidu’s party in Andhra Pradesh. If Naidu withdraws his support, this government will collapse, leading to political instability and horse-trading as seen in the past,” he observed.

S.Y. Quraishi, the former Chief Election Commissioner, refuted the claim that ‘One Nation, One Election’ is needed to prevent policy paralysis caused by the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

“This argument is completely baseless,” he said, urging attendees to study the MCC.

“The code only restricts the announcement of new schemes. Why do politicians suddenly conceive new schemes two weeks before an election? They have had four years and eleven months to implement their ideas,” he noted.

The event brought together legal experts, journalists, and political leaders to discuss the potential consequences of the controversial proposal, with Tamil Nadu’s leadership strongly opposing it.
