Assam to begin first statewide land resurvey: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati, Aug 1 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the state government will launch “Mission Basundhara 4” on December 25, under which Assam will undertake its first systematic land resurvey since the 1960s, covering around 18,000 villages over the next four years using modern Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology.

Sharing details in a post on social media platform X on Friday, the Chief Minister added that land reforms remain central to the government’s vision of protecting the state’s “Jati, Mati and Bheti” (identity, land and heritage).

Chief Minister Sarma said that he held a detailed review meeting with senior officials on three major initiatives — Project JORIP, Project ASOM and Project MATI — which will form the foundation of Mission Basundhara 4.

According to the Chief Minister, the mission will modernise Assam’s land administration through scientific surveys, digitisation and technology-driven governance to ensure greater transparency and accuracy in land records.

He said the state-wide resurvey will be the first comprehensive exercise of its kind in more than six decades and will use advanced GNSS technology to ensure that official land records accurately reflect ground realities.

The exercise will cover nearly 18,000 villages across Assam over a four-year period and is expected to address long-pending discrepancies in land ownership records.

Besides the resurvey, the state government plans to achieve complete digitisation of land records as part of the mission.

Chief Minister Sarma said the initiative would also introduce a scientific, Geographic Information System (GIS)-based land valuation mechanism aimed at bringing greater uniformity and transparency to property valuation.

The Chief Minister added that the state government intends to simplify land registration services by adopting a citizen-centric approach that would make property transactions faster, more transparent and reliable.

Mission Basundhara has been one of the Assam government’s flagship land governance initiatives, focusing on resolving land-related issues through technology-enabled reforms and streamlined public services.

The proposed fourth phase is expected to significantly strengthen land administration by integrating modern surveying techniques, digital records and simplified registration procedures across the state.

Gujarat: 200 athletes from 31 nations to compete in Asian Senior Weightlifting Championship

Gandhinagar, May 9 (IANS) Around 200 athletes from 31 countries are set to compete at the Asian Senior Weightlifting Championship-2026 in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar, marking one of the largest international sporting gatherings to be held in India this year.​

The championship, organised by the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF), will take place at Mahatma Mandir from May 11 to 17.​

Alongside the athletes, nearly 200 coaches, support staff, team officials and delegates are expected to attend, as well as around 50 international technical officials.​

The event will also bring together 50 dignitaries, including senior representatives of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) and the Asian Weightlifting Federation (AWF).​

The participation list is expected to include some of the sport’s most decorated athletes, with six Olympic Games medallists, 35 World Championship medallists and 10 Asian Games medallists confirmed to compete, alongside multiple medallists from Commonwealth Games and continental championships.​

The scale of participation has positioned the championship as both a major continental competition and a key qualifying event for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.​

IWLF officials said the event is expected to provide competitive exposure for emerging lifters while allowing established athletes to compete at the highest level ahead of future international events.​

In addition to the sporting events, the Executive Board meeting and Annual Congress of the Asian Weightlifting Federation will be held in Ahmedabad on May 12, coinciding with the championship schedule.​

The opening ceremony will take place on the same day at the Mahatma Mandir Convention and Exhibition Centre.​

It is scheduled to be attended by Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi and Minister of State for Sports, Jayram Gamit.​

Senior international officials, including Mohamed Hassan Jaloud, President of the International Weightlifting Federation and First Vice President of the Asian Weightlifting Federation; Mohamed Bin Yousef Al Mana, President of the Asian Weightlifting Federation; and Mohammed Ahmed Al Harbi, Secretary General of the Asian Weightlifting Federation, will also attend.​

This will be the fourth time that India, through the IWLF, has been entrusted with hosting the Championship tournament.​

Previous editions were held in Pune in 2015, Greater Noida in 2023 and Ahmedabad in 2025.​

The federation has, in recent years, expanded its hosting portfolio to include Commonwealth-level championships across youth, junior, and senior categories, as part of efforts to increase international participation and competitive opportunities for Indian lifters.​

The 2026 championship in Gandhinagar is expected to continue that trajectory, with participation from across Asia and beyond at the heart of the event’s scale and significance.​

Hosting major international sporting events, such as the Asian Senior Weightlifting Championship, is significant for Gujarat, as it strengthens its position in the global sports ecosystem ahead of larger multi-sport events.​

With India already awarded the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad and positioning itself as a contender for the 2036 Olympic Games, such international competitions are viewed as crucial test events that help develop world-class infrastructure, improve event management capacity, and showcase organisational readiness at global standards.​

No respite for Bengal as Met office predicts more rain in coming days

Kolkata, Sep 15 (IANS) The Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore has forecast light to moderate rain in Kolkata and the south Bengal districts till Wednesday.

While the monsoon has begun retreating from some parts of the country, it is yet to withdraw from Bengal, keeping the rain spell active. Heavy rainfall is also expected in several districts of north Bengal.

A senior official of the Met office said, “The monsoon retreated from some areas of western Rajasthan on Sunday, three days ahead of its usual September 17 schedule. A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal near the Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts has shifted towards Telangana, reducing its direct impact on Bengal. However, scattered light to moderate rain will continue in south Bengal.”

In addition, a cyclonic circulation over north-eastern Bangladesh — extending between 3.1 km and 5.8 km above sea level — is drawing moisture from the Bay of Bengal. This is likely to trigger thunderstorms across both north and south Bengal.

Almost all southern districts, including Kolkata, are expected to witness intermittent rain over the next few days. Heavy showers are likely in Purulia, West Burdwan, Bankura, Birbhum, and Murshidabad from Monday, while thunderstorms may occur in other districts.

In north Bengal, heavy rainfall is expected for the next three to four days. Very heavy rain is likely in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar, where an orange alert has been issued. Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Cooch Behar are also set to receive heavy showers, while North Dinajpur may experience similar conditions from Monday. However, no heavy rain is predicted for South Dinajpur and Malda.

On Sunday, Kolkata recorded a maximum temperature of 32.2 degrees Celsius, 0.6 degrees below normal, and a minimum of 28.1 degrees C, 1.7 degrees above normal. Relative humidity ranged from 97 per cent to 76 per cent.
