Bengal court issues fresh summons to Abhishek Banerjee for collection of voice samples

Kolkata, July 1 (IANS) A district court in North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal, on Wednesday issued a notice to Trinamool Congress general secretary and the party’s Lok Sabha member, Abhishek Banerjee, to be present at the court so that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) sleuths can collect his voice samples in a case where he is accused of making violence-inciting statements and threatening Union Home Minister Amit Shah at a campaign rally.

In the fresh summons issued on Wednesday, Abhishek, the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was asked to present at the same district court on July 8, so that the CID sleuths could collect his voice samples in the presence of the judicial magistrate and forensic experts.

On Wednesday, the Judicial Magistrate of Bidhannagar Court at Salt Lake in North 24 Parganas district directed the Diamond Harbour MP to be present at the court by 10 a.m. on July 8.

Abhishek was scheduled to be present before the district court on Tuesday for the same purpose. However, he did not turn up at the district court on Tuesday because of a parallel hearing in a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court on his petition challenging the district court’s earlier order relating to the collection of his voice samples.

However, on Tuesday, the single-judge bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh refused to entertain his plea for relief from the collection of voice samples and also observed that when Abhishek had already been granted interim protection from coercive police action, including arrest in the main case by another single-judge bench of the same court, there was no need for fresh protection from submitting voice samples in this case.

Justice Ghosh also observed that the court could not dictate to any investigating agency which line of investigation the latter should follow. Thereafter, Justice Ghosh announced his decision to recuse himself from further hearing in the matter.

The matter was then referred to the Calcutta High Court’s Acting Chief Justice, Tapabrata Chakraborty, who will now decide which new bench will hear it.

Abhishek was earlier granted interim protection against coercive police action, including arrest, by the Calcutta High Court’s single-judge bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharya.

However, Justice Bhattacharya’s bench also directed Abhishek to fully cooperate with the investigating agency and directed the CID to inform the court if the Trinamool Congress general secretary did not extend necessary cooperation in the probe.

Rajasthan govt employee arrested in Jaisalmer on suspicion of spying for Pakistan

Jaipur, May 29 (IANS) Security agencies have arrested a government employee in Jaisalmer on charges of espionage. The accused, Shakoor Khan, currently employed as a clerk at the Mangalia District Employment Office had recently travelled to Pakistan without obtaining departmental permission.

He was formerly the personal secretary of ex-minister Saleh Mohammad in 2008, during his tenure as the MLA from Pokhran.

According to reports, the authorities discovered several Pakistani phone numbers in his phone which Shakoor Khan couldn’t explain. He also confessed that he had travelled to Pakistan at least seven times in recent years.

Officials revealed that acting on Intelligence inputs, security personnel detained Shakoor Khan from the employment office and began questioning him regarding his visit.

Sources confirmed that Shakoor, a resident of Mangalia Ki Dhani in Baroda village, is being interrogated by the Joint Investigation Committee.

Multiple agencies are collaborating to probe the matter further as Shakoor Khan was found to have phone numbers associated with Pakistan stored on his device, officials said.

The arrest comes amid heightened security across India following ‘Operation Sindoor’, launched in response to the recent Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people, mostly civilians, were killed.

Given the strategic sensitivity of Jaisalmer due to its proximity to the Indo-Pak border, agencies are closely monitoring all suspicious activities. As of now, no official statement has been released by authorities regarding the case.

The Joint Investigation Committee is questioning Shakoor Khan, who was caught from the employment office on Wednesday night.

Various investigation agencies are working together to get to the bottom of this matter, said officials, adding, “Shakoor is being questioned for travelling to Pakistan without informing the department despite being a government employee.”

“There were inputs about Shakoor Khan that he could be involved in spying for Pakistan. He was on surveillance following inputs and was detained last night,” media reports quoted an official as saying.

A joint interrogation was conducted in Jaisalmer following which the team left for Jaipur with Shakoor Khan.

ISRO-supported space lab set up in Arunachal Pradesh

Itanagar, Aug 16 (IANS) In collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), a state-of-the-art space laboratory was set up at remote Mechuka in Arunachal Pradesh’s Shi-Yomi district to provide students with practical experience in space science and technology, officials said on Saturday.

Arunachal Pradesh Education, Tourism and Libraries Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona inaugurated the laboratory on Friday afternoon to provide students with practical experience in space science and technology, to boost their inquisitiveness and innovation besides to generate a scientific thoughts among the students and youths.

In a series of posts on his X handle, Sona said: “Today marks an emotional and proud moment for me as I inaugurated the Pasang Wangchuk Sona ISRO Space Laboratory at Government Higher Secondary School, Mechukha – dedicated to my late father, Shri Pasang Wangchuk Sona.”

He said that this laboratory is not just an educational facility; it is a tribute to his unwavering belief in the power of education and curiosity.

“I hope it becomes a place where our children dream bigger, explore science fearlessly, and reach for the stars. May this space lab inspire generations of young minds in Shi-Yomi and beyond to innovate, discover, and lead our state into a brighter future,” the minister said.

Shi-Yomi Deputy Commissioner Liyi Bagra, Deputy Director of School Education Tade Dabi, Muskaan Chief Operating Officer Pranesh Debnath, students, teachers and community leaders attended the event.

Meanwhile, according to an official in Manipur, at least 100 science students from each of the eight Northeastern states would get an opportunity to visit the ISRO in Bengaluru to ignite curiosity and foster awareness about space science and technology.

The official said that talented science students from the Northeastern states would visit the ISRO headquarters in different batches.

The tour is organised under the programme North East Student Programme for Awareness, Reach and Knowledge on Space (NE-SPARKS).

The programme is being implemented by North East Space Applications Centre (NE-SAC) under the initiative of the Ministry of the DoNER (Development of North Eastern Region).

The aim of the tour is to ignite curiosity and foster awareness about space science and technology, the official said.

The NE-SAC, located near Meghalaya’s capital, Shillong, is a joint initiative of the Department of Science and the North Eastern Council (NEC) to provide developmental support to the northeastern region (NER) using space science and technology.

Punjab signs pact to launch cashless health insurance cover on Jan 15

Chandigarh, Jan 2 (IANS) To roll out the ‘Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna’ on January 15, the state government on Friday signed a pact with the United India Insurance Company to provide Rs 10 lakh cashless health insurance cover to all families of Punjab.

The agreement was signed by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) State Health Agency, Sanyam Aggarwal and Executive Director of United India Insurance, Mathew George, in the presence of State Health and Family Welfare Minister Balbir Singh.

Declaring it a landmark reform, the minister said the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna significantly expanded health protection from the earlier Rs 5 lakh coverage, which was limited to specific categories.

“The new scheme aims to provide cashless treatment up to Rs 10 lakh per family per year to all residents of Punjab, including government employees and pensioners,” he said.

He said Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal would formally launch this scheme on January 15. The minister emphasised that the scheme is designed for total inclusivity, featuring no income cap or exclusion criteria.

“Enrolment has been made simple and accessible through Common Service Centres (CSCs) using only Aadhaar and voter IDs, after which beneficiaries will receive dedicated MMSY health cards. A helpline will be launched soon to facilitate the process,” he said.

Highlighting the operational framework, the minister said United India Insurance Company would provide coverage of Rs 100,000 per family for all 65 lakh families in the state.

“For treatment requirements between Rs 100,000 and Rs 10,00,000, the insurance will be provided by the state health agency on a trust basis,” he said.

He said the scheme adopts the latest health benefit package, ensuring comprehensive coverage through more than 2,000 selected treatment packages.

“Beneficiaries can access secondary and tertiary care across a robust network of 824 empanelled hospitals, which currently includes 212 public hospitals, eight government of India hospitals, and over 600 private hospitals. The number of empanelled hospitals is expected to increase further as the scheme progresses,” he added.
