Bengal Police locate second bike used in Chandranath Rath murder case

Kolkata, May 8 (IANS) The Special Investigating Team (SIT) of the West Bengal Police, which is probing the murder of Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant (PA) to Suvednu Adhikari, has successfully located and retrieved the second motorcycle involved in the crime that occurred on the night of May 6 in Madhyamgram, North 24 Parganas.

Initially, it was reported that while Rath was returning home on Wednesday night after attending a BJP programme, his vehicle was being followed by just one motorcycle ridden by the assailant. However, insiders from the state police said, Rath’s vehicle was shadowed by two motorcycles.

While one of the two motorcycles was recovered on Thursday afternoon from an abandoned place near the scene of assassination at Doharia crossing at Madhyamgram, the other motorcycle has been traced by the investigating official, at another abandoned place near a rail-gate at Barasat, also in North 24 Parganas.

Earlier, the police also recovered the four-wheeler, which blocked the path of Rath’s vehicle, so that motorcycle-borne assailants could stop by his vehicle and shoot at him several times from a close range, ensuring his death on the spot.

However, the investigating officials have not been able to arrest anyone so far.

The assassination of Rath took place on Wednesday at around 10.30 p.m. while he was returning to his home at Madhyamgram in his vehicle. The driver of his vehicle, Buddhadeb Bera, was also hit by a bullet and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kolkata.

Already, the investigating officials have got information that the number plates of both the four-wheeler which blocked Rath’s vehicle and the first motorcycle, which was recovered on Thursday, were fake.

The investigating officials doubt that the number plate of the second motorcycle, which was recovered on Friday afternoon, is also fake.

A source in the state police said the manner in which the assassination was carried out indicated that the operation had been planned well in advance and that Rath’s daily movements had been under surveillance for a considerable period.

The source added that the way the assailant stopped beside Rath’s vehicle, fired at least 10 rounds from close range, and escaped immediately afterwards suggested that the killer was an experienced and professional sharpshooter.

Patna, April 11 (IANS) Bihar Leader of Opposition (LoP), Tejashwi Yadav, on Friday responded to the Congress party’s ongoing ‘Palayan Roko, Naukri Do’ yatra and its attempted siege of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s residence, asserting that such movements were initiated by his party RJD much before anyone else.

“We were the first to raise these issues. Be it the ‘Berozgari Hatao’, ‘Reservation Bachao’, or ‘Samvidhan Bachao’ yatras, we brought these issues to the streets first. These are national issues, but they deeply impact Bihar. It’s good that others are also joining this cause now,” Tejashwi told reporters in Patna on Friday.

He welcomed the participation of other parties in raising unemployment concerns while maintaining that his party had long been at the forefront of such campaigns.

When asked about political strategist Prashant Kishor’s rally in Gandhi Maidan in Patna, Tejashwi responded diplomatically, “Anyone can hold a rally. Everyone is doing their work. We are also doing ours.”

He also recalled Lalu Yadav’s historic ‘Garib Rally’, calling it the largest in Bihar’s political history. “The public decides everything. Our job is to raise their voice,” he added.

Tejashwi didn’t hold back his criticism of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, expressing concern about his health and effectiveness.

“The Chief Minister’s condition is worrying. His age and health are clearly affecting his functioning. Everything will be clear after the elections,” he said.

He described the current state of law and order in Bihar as “criminal disorder”, citing daily incidents of violence.

“Every day more than 200 bullets are fired. Murders, kidnappings, and robberies have become routine. Even the CM’s Home Ministry is unable to control it,” he alleged.

LoP Tejashwi also accused the Bihar government of promoting corrupt officials to shield criminals and passing laws that enable protection for wrongdoers.

Referring to the recent murder of a JD(U) leader’s nephew, he stated, “Whether it’s a common citizen or someone with influence, no one is safe in Bihar anymore.”

Commenting on the extradition of 26/11 accused Tahawwur Rana to India, Tejashwi welcomed the move sating, “Action against those involved in such acts is necessary and appropriate. It’s a good step.”

SIR Phase II: Over 37 crore enumeration forms distributed across 12 states/UTs

New Delhi, Nov 12 (IANS) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has achieved a major milestone under Phase II of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, distributing more than 37 crore Enumeration Forms (EFs) to electors across 12 States and Union Territories as of November 12, 2025, the poll panel said on Wednesday.

According to the ECI’s latest daily bulletin, a total of 50.69 crore EFs were printed, marking 99.41 per cent completion, out of which 72.66 per cent (37.05 crore) have already been distributed.

The ongoing Enumeration Phase runs from November 4 to December 4, 2025.

States such as Goa, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and West Bengal have achieved near-total coverage, reflecting efficient ground-level coordination.

Lakshadweep reported 100 per cent completion in printing and distribution, while Goa distributed (99.99 per cent), Puducherry (93.4 per cent), Andaman and Nicobar (89.22 per cent), Gujarat distributed over 4.47 crore forms (88.08 per cent), while Tamil Nadu distributed over 5 crore forms (78.09 per cent) and others.

Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, distributed 10.8 crore forms, covering nearly 70 per cent of its electorate. Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan followed with over 53 per cent and 70 per cent coverage, respectively.

Similarly, poll-bound West Bengal reported distribution of over 6.80 crore forms, covering a total of 88.8 per cent.

Smaller regions like Puducherry and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have also recorded impressive progress above 89 per cent.

More than 5.33 lakh Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and 7.64 lakh Booth Level Agents (BLAs) have been deployed to ensure every eligible elector is reached.

The ECI stated that all recognised political parties have been asked to appoint additional BLAs to strengthen field-level verification and enhance the accuracy of electoral rolls.

Notably, the second phase of the Bihar Assembly elections concluded peacefully on Tuesday, recording a voter turnout of 68.79 per cent, with data from around 2,000 polling booths still pending, according to the state’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Vinod Singh Gunjiyal.

He said the average turnout in the first and second phases stands at 66.90 per cent, which is 9.6 per cent higher than the previous Assembly election and a historic high since the 1951-52 election.

The total percentage of male voters turned out at 62.8 per cent and female 71.60 per cent in both phases.

ECI counters Trinamool’s allegations, says point-wise replies given on Bengal SIR concerns

Kolkata/New Delhi, Nov 28 (IANS) The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday strongly refuted the Trinamool Congress’ allegation that Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar failed to respond satisfactorily to five key questions raised by the party regarding the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal.

In a detailed response, senior commission officials said the ECI provided a “point-wise rebuttal” to every concern raised by the 10-member Trinamool Congress parliamentary delegation that met top election authorities at Nirvachan Sadan in Delhi earlier in the day.

According to commission insiders, the ECI clarified that the revision exercise is being carried out strictly in accordance with constitutional mandates and electoral laws, and that political parties are expected to participate in and cooperate with the process rather than undermine it.

The officials also dismissed the Trinamool Congress’ claim — made publicly after the meeting — that the commission remained silent on five specific queries, including the party’s allegation that the SIR was being selectively imposed on Bengal while other border states were not being subjected to similar scrutiny.

Election Commission sources said the ECI informed the delegation that all objections, complaints and documentary submissions related to the revision process must be filed after the draft electoral rolls are published on December 9.

Only after the publication of the draft rolls can claims and objections be formally examined, they said.

The ECI further communicated to the Trinamool Congress delegation that voter roll preparation and election conduct are constitutionally vested responsibilities of the commission, and every stakeholder — including political parties — must operate within the legal framework governing these processes.

On the Trinamool Congress’ allegation that booth-level officers (BLOs) and data-entry personnel were working under extreme pressure or facing intimidation, the commission told the delegation that it treats such complaints seriously.

The Election Commission insiders said the ECI has already directed the top police administration in West Bengal to ensure that BLOs, electoral registration officers, assistant electoral registration officers, and data-entry operators — all of whom are state government employees assigned to ECI duties — are not threatened, coerced or subjected to political pressure from any quarter.

According to officials, the ECI also communicated that the SIR aims to ensure accuracy and integrity in the electoral rolls, including the removal of ineligible entries. The commission underlined that all legally prescribed measures required to eliminate fake voters or non-citizens from the rolls would be implemented as part of the ongoing revision exercise.

Earlier in the day, after emerging from the meeting with the ECI, members of the Trinamool Congress delegation alleged that the commission had no credible answer as to whether the SIR was intended to identify “fake voters” or so-called “infiltrators”, and why West Bengal was the only border state undergoing the exercise.

They also claimed the ECI failed to provide clarity on procedures, the workload faced by field officers, and the rationale behind conducting the revision at this time.

However, Election Commission insiders maintained that every issue raised by the TMC MPs had been addressed at the meeting and that the delegation was advised to submit formal objections once the draft rolls are out.
