Bihar leaders mark 80th I-Day with flag-hoisting ceremonies

Patna, Aug 15 (IANS) On the occasion of the 80th Independence Day, Bihar Health Minister Nishant Kumar hoisted the Tricolour at Akshaywat Rai Stadium in Vaishali on Saturday.

He paid tribute to the freedom fighters and brave citizens who sacrificed their lives for India’s independence and extended his greetings to the people of Bihar and the country.

After the flag‑hoisting ceremony, Nishant Kumar called upon people to take a collective pledge to uphold the unity, integrity and development of the nation. He urged citizens to work together towards building a strong and prosperous India.

Earlier in the morning, he had also hoisted the national flag at his residence in Patna and paid tribute to the freedom fighters through a social media post.

Nishant Kumar, the son of former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, is serving as the state’s Health Minister in the NDA government. This is his first term as a minister, making Saturday’s Independence Day ceremony his first in the ministerial role.

Union Food Processing Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) national president Chirag Paswan also marked Independence Day by hoisting the national flag at the party office in Patna. He subsequently released white doves, symbolising peace and freedom.

Addressing the occasion, Chirag Paswan said achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat requires a broad outlook and ambitious goals. He also called for identifying and countering forces and mindsets that promote instability and, according to him, seek to obstruct India’s development with external support.

Meanwhile, former Health Minister and Janshakti Janata Dal national president Tej Pratap Yadav hoisted the Tricolour at his party office at 42, Harding Road, Patna.

RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav hoisted the Tricolour at his residence in Patna.

The separate ceremonies across Bihar reflected participation by leaders from different political parties in commemorating India’s Independence Day and paying tribute to those who contributed to the country’s freedom.

New Delhi, July 5 (IANS) Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday criticised Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for suggesting a link between Covid-19 vaccines developed in India and the sudden deaths.

Speaking to the media, on the sidelines of IIT Madras Alumni Association’s Sangam 2025 event in Bengaluru, Piyush Goyal praised the Indian scientists for developing Covid vaccine in record time and the pharmaceutical sector for making it cost-effective.

“Fake narratives can’t dilute the extraordinary work done by our scientists and the pharma industry in our fight against Covid,” said Goyal.

“Such a big country like India was able to provide 250 crore vaccines for free, because the companies of our country had the strength to make the vaccine at a much lower cost,” he added.

His comments come in the wake of Siddaramaiah’s recent post on social media platform X on “the hasty approval and distribution of the Covid vaccine to the public”.

The CM linked it to the more than 20 heart attack-related deaths seen in Karnataka’s Hassan district in just 40 days.

The Union Health Ministry, along with several scientists as well as pharma associations, has denied any link between Covid vaccines and the reported sudden deaths.

A joint clarification from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) stated that ongoing surveillance and analyses have not revealed any significant deviation in patterns of cardiac-related deaths since before the pandemic.

“I feel that the Chief Minister here does not disrespect, he insults, and when he insults our scientists, our pharmacy, then I do not know what is the motive behind it?” Goyal said.

“Apologise to the Indian scientists and the pharmaceutical sector,” he added.

He also asked whether the CM and the Congress are working at the behest of foreign powers.

“Are these the foreign powers whose agenda they are running here, are the foreign powers who want to lure India’s pharmacy, are they troubled by India’s economic progress and development,” Goyal said.

Trinamool councillor files FIR against BJP’s Bengal chief

Kolkata, June 21 (IANS) An FIR has been registered against the West Bengal BJP chief, Sukanta Majumdar, at a police station in Kolkata on Saturday based on a complaint lodged by a Trinamool Congress councillor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).

In her complaint to the Bartala Police Station in North Kolkata, the Trinamool Congress councillor from ward number 18 of KMC, Sunanda Sarkar, accused Majumdar of comparing the law and order situation in West Bengal with the ambience of a red-light area in Kolkata.

Incidentally, a major portion of ward number 18 of KMC, where Sarkar is the councillor, consists of the city’s as well as Asia’s oldest red-light area, which Majumdar allegedly referred to in his speech.

Besides registering the complaint against Majumdar at the police station, Sarkar had also written a letter to the BJP’s national president, J.P. Nadda, questioning how an elected Lok Sabha member and a Union Minister could make such a derogatory comment about the law and order situation in West Bengal.

The development happened a day after Majumdar, on Friday, wrote letters to both Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla as well as the Union Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah, complaining about an attack on him and his associates by supporters of the ruling Trinamool Congress on Thursday.

In the letters, Majumdar had accused the police forces present at the spot of refraining from taking any preventive or protective action. This, according to him, amounted to “wilful negligence, dereliction of duty, and enabling political violence.”

According to Majumdar, the incident not only endangered the life of a public representative but also constituted a direct assault on the dignity and privilege of a Member of Parliament. He also argued that the event was a “serious breach of privilege and contempt of the House,” and also requested the Lok Sabha speaker to take cognisance of the matter and refer it to the Committee of Privileges for appropriate examination and action.

‘Stop justifying rape’: BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj tells Mamata Banerjee

New Delhi, Oct 13 (IANS) BJP MP from New Delhi, Bansuri Swaraj, on Monday asked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to stop “justifying” rape and advising women not to step out of homes after dark.

Addressing media persons, Swaraj referred to the gang-rape in Durgapur and said, “A Dalit medical college student is gang-raped under the Mamata Banerjee’s government, but instead of taking strict action, she insensitively justifies this heinous crime, saying women shouldn’t go out late at night. This is utterly shameful.”

“West Bengal’s TMC government has become a symbol of regressive thinking. From Park Street 2012 to Hanskhali 2022, Kamduni 2013, and the R.G. Kar Medical College incident in 2024, Mamata Banerjee has continuously tried to justify rape incidents with shameful statements,” she said.

Swaraj stated that this is not the first instance and that a clear pattern has emerged, with the TMC becoming synonymous with regressive thinking. Even in the 2012 brutal rape case in Park Street, CM Banerjee blamed the victim, stating it was a ‘Sajano Ghatana,’ implying the case was fabricated, a completely shameful stance.

The BJP MP said, “Mamata Banerjee herself raises the slogan of ‘Maa, Mati, and Manush’, yet under her rule, Bengal’s ‘Maa’ is humiliated, ‘Mati’ is drenched in blood, and ‘Manush’ is in distress.”

Swaraj highlighted that, during the R.G. Kar rape case in 2024, CM Mamata Banerjee tried to justify the crime, claiming that such incidents occur regularly because young men and women now walk hand in hand.

This reflects TMC’s regressive mindset. In 2024, when medical students from the state protested and sought justice, Mamata Banerjee labelled them as ‘motivated’, she said.

BJP spokesperson Guru Prakash Paswan stated that this is an extremely serious matter, and it is important to bring it to public attention that Congress leaders have remained silent on the inhuman incident involving the Dalit girl in West Bengal.

“Congress’s top leaders have similarly remained silent on the rape of a 10-year-old tribal girl in Mysuru, Karnataka. A few days ago, Congress was also silent on the gruesome violence against BJP MP Khagen Murmu in West Bengal. Despite this, Congress and its allies are attempting to create a false narrative, linking unrelated incidents to give them a political colour,” he said.
