Bihar: LJP (Ramvilas) announces new national executive

Patna, Aug 26 (IANS) The Lok Janshakti Party (Ramvilas) has announced its new national executive committee, with party president and Union Minister Chirag Paswan unveiling the revamped team ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

As part of the organisational restructuring, Surendra Vivek has been appointed Bihar State President. He replaces Raju Tiwari, an MLA from East Champaran.

The party has also given important responsibilities to new faces, grassroots workers, youth and women as it seeks to strengthen its organisational network.

The restructuring comes as Assembly elections are due in several states. The LJP (Ramvilas) leadership has said the objective is to strengthen the party at the grassroots and prepare the organisation to meet electoral challenges more effectively.

Among the key appointments, Chirag Paswan will continue as National President and Chairman of the party’s national executive committee.

Surendra Vivek has been appointed Bihar State President, Janardan Paswan as Jharkhand State President, while Raju Tiwari will hold a new post of National General Secretary. Dhirendra Kumar Munna has also been appointed National General Secretary, along with Abdul Khaliq, who has secured the same post.

The party has promoted several leaders who have worked at the grassroots level, signalling that it will increasingly entrust organisational responsibilities to active workers.

The new executive committee places particular emphasis on the participation of youth and women. The party said the move is intended to improve social representation within the organisation and reflects the philosophy of its late founder Ram Vilas Paswan, who viewed the party structure as a reflection of society.

While congratulating the newly appointed office‑bearers, Chirag Paswan stressed that an organisational post is not merely a designation but a major responsibility. He instructed the new team to work towards strengthening the party in their respective regions.

The party’s immediate organisational priority will be to build a stronger network from the state level down to the booth level and intensify preparations for the upcoming elections.

New Delhi, July 28 (IANS) As the Lok Sabha is scheduled to hold a high-stakes debate on Monday regarding ‘Operation Sindoor’ and the Pahalgam terror attack, lawmakers across party lines are calling for a non-partisan, serious discussion on national security.

The proceedings, scheduled for an extended 16-hour session, are expected to be one of the most defining moments of the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati urged both the government and the Opposition to approach the debate with a spirit of unity and responsibility.

Taking to social media platform X, she posted: “The discussion on ‘Operation Sindoor’ starting in Parliament today should be approached by both the ruling party and the Opposition by rising above partisan politics. Going forward, the government and the Opposition should work together under a solid strategy to ensure that no woman’s ‘sindoor’ is wiped away and no mother has to lose her son; this is also the demand of the times.”

Echoing the demand for accountability, Purnea MP Pappu Yadav emphasised the need for direct communication from the top leadership.

“Our leader Rahul Gandhi and the entire Opposition have consistently demanded that the Prime Minister be present in Parliament and respond directly. It is absolutely essential that the Prime Minister himself answers questions on ‘Operation Sindoor,’” he said.

In the Lok Sabha, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will open the debate, presenting the government’s perspective on Operation Sindoor, a military and diplomatic initiative launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Home Minister Amit Shah and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will also speak, addressing the internal and international dimensions of the issue.

After a turbulent first week of disruptions during the Monsoon Session of the Parliament, mostly over electoral roll revisions and other contentious issues, this debate marks a shift in focus toward national security and bipartisan responsibility.

Leaders from both sides are expected to clash over the handling of the Pahalgam terror attack and India’s broader counterterrorism approach.

Calcutta HC judge recuses himself from hearing two cases on same grounds

Kolkata, Feb 26 (IANS) A Calcutta High Court judge on Wednesday recused himself from hearing two different cases on the same grounds, and in both, expressed ire over the role of the state government in the matters.

The judge concerned is Justice Biswajit Basu.

The first case that he recused from the hearing was the matter of irregularities in recruitment in schools run by the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) in the hills of Darjeeling, Kurseong, and Kalimpong, all in the Darjeeling district.

The second case was relating the closure of hotels and resorts at the core and buffer zones of the Buxa Tiger Reserve in the Alipurduar district.

In both matters, the state government counsel had argued that these two cases come under the Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench of the high court and the matters could not be heard at any bench of the court in Kolkata.

Questions are now being raised on why the state government had raised the objections relating to the jurisdiction of hearing the case of recruitment irregularities in GTA-run schools when the matter had already been heard at Justice Basu’s bench several times earlier.

The state government counsel too had not given any explanation on its part on this late objection.

While the judge recused from hearing the matter because of the objections raised by the state government counsel, he had raised some pertinent questions relating to the case of recruitment irregularities in GTA-run schools.

Justice Basu questioned the steps taken by the administrative authority concerned against the accused persons in the case. He also questioned why notices from the competent authorities are yet to be sent to the accused persons.

The Gorkha Unemployed Primary Teachers’ Welfare Association was the first body to raise the allegations of irregularities in teachers’ recruitment in GTA-controlled schools. The association also approached the court demanding a thorough probe into the matter.

Indian Military Heritage Festival’s third edition to begin in Delhi today

New Delhi, Nov 14 (IANS) The third edition of the annual Indian Military Heritage Festival (IMHF) will begin in the national capital on Friday, exhibiting the diverse aspects and initiatives of the Indian armed forces, an official said.

Hosted by the United Service Institution of India, the two-day event on November 14 and 15 will be inaugurated by Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth.

Focusing on fostering discussions on India’s military history and heritage as well as issues related to national security and geopolitics, the IMHF aims to serve as a platform for multi-stakeholder dialogue and engagement among the three Services, administrators and diplomats, academia and think-tanks, private and public industry, and the public at large, said the official in a statement.

The IMHF 2025 is set to feature attractions such as an exhibition of iconic military paintings of Lt Col Arul Raj (Retd) and the release of publications including: The Sukraniti: Statecraft and Warcraft by Col P.K. Gautam (Retd) and Honours & Awards of the Indian Armed Forces by Dr A.K. Mishra.

The event also comprises panel discussions featuring well-known authors of books on or related to India’s military history and heritage. These include sessions titled Operation Sindoor, The War India Forgot, Contested Partitions, Tussles over Tibet, BSF and Bangladesh, Udbhav, Taming the Waves, Military Biographies, and Technology and Strategy.

The last edition of the Festival witnessed the launch of Project ‘Shaurya Gatha’. The project is an initiative of the Department of Military Affairs and the USI of India, which aims to conserve and promote India’s military heritage through education and tourism,” the statement read.

During the two-day programme, prominent publications on military topics were the key highlight, with book releases including: Because of This: A History of the Indo-Pak Air War December 1971 by Air Marshal Vikram Singh (Retd); Valour and Honour – a joint publication of the Indian Army and USI of India, and Silent Weapons, Deadly Secrets: Unveiling the Bioweapons Arms Race by Dr. Mrinmayee Bhushan, edited by Lt Gen Vinod Khandare (Retd), Principal Advisor MOD, among others.

In 2024, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) presented a photo exhibition highlighting its journey and achievements in contributing to Atmanirbhar Bharat through innovations in defence research.

“The participation of NCC Cadets and students from schools and colleges across the Delhi NCR area inspired the younger generation to consider careers in the armed forces. Informative stalls from the three Services will showcase their roles and the various opportunities available for aspiring youth,” said a statement.

The inaugural IMHF was held on October 21-22, 2023, at the Manekshaw Centre here. “The programme showcased India’s military culture through performances by military bands from the three Services and various exhibits highlighting the diverse aspects and initiatives of the Indian armed forces,” the statement read.
