BJP chief Nitin Nabin to engage with youth, party workers in Andhra Pradesh today

Visakhapatnam, Aug 18 (IANS) BJP National President, Nitin Nabin, will begin a packed schedule of organisational and political engagements in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday, focussing on strengthening the party’s grassroots network, reviewing organisational preparedness and engaging with youth and elected representatives.

Nabin’s visit comes at a time when the BJP is seeking to deepen its organisational presence across the state through greater booth-level engagement and closer coordination between its leadership and grassroots workers.

On Tuesday morning, the BJP National President is scheduled to offer prayers and seek ‘darshan’ at the Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple in Simhachalam, where he will invoke blessings for peace, progress and prosperity.

He will then attend a high-level organisational session in Visakhapatnam, bringing together district presidents, district in-charges and state office-bearers. The meeting will focus on evaluating organisational outreach and strengthening booth-level engagement across Andhra Pradesh.

At around 11 a.m., Nabin will lead a ceremonial flag hoisting and visit a specially curated party exhibition. Following the exhibition visit, he will preside over an Extended State Executive Meeting, where the party’s political road map and strategic priorities for the state are expected to be discussed.

Highlighting the BJP’s emphasis on grassroots leadership, Nabin will also join party workers for lunch and interact directly with them.

The BJP National President is scheduled to participate in a Yuva Samvad interactive session at Hotel Novotel Varun Beach at 4 p.m., where he will engage with more than 200 students, young professionals and other young participants.

Discussions will centre on nation-building, innovation, digital leadership and youth empowerment under the vision of Viksit Bharat.

His schedule will also include a meeting with BJP MPs, MLAs and MLCs to review parliamentary initiatives, constituency outreach and development priorities in Andhra Pradesh.

Specialised small-group sessions will also be held to improve coordination between central welfare schemes and their implementation at the grassroots level.

Nitin Nabin arrived at Bhogapuram International Airport in Visakhapatnam on the evening of August 17, where he received a warm welcome from senior BJP leaders and party workers.

Pongal rush: 11 lakh leave Chennai; public transportation, road traffic under strain

Chennai, Jan 12 (IANS) An estimated 11 lakh people left Chennai for various parts of Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states over the weekend ahead of the Pongal festival, triggering a massive surge in demand for public transport and heavy congestion on major highways.

Railways handled the bulk of the festive rush. A total of 97 trains departed from Chennai Central and 85 trains from Chennai Egmore and Tambaram on Saturday and Sunday. Together, these services have the capacity to carry around 3.65 lakh passengers per day.

Railway sources said that over the past two days alone, more than seven lakh passengers are estimated to have travelled by train from the city. To ease the demand, additional special trains were operated to Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Tiruchy and other key destinations.

Road travel, however, was marked by long delays. National highways leading out of the city witnessed heavy congestion, particularly the GST Road, where vehicle queues stretched from Tambaram to Guduvanchery for several hours.

Traffic police deployed additional personnel and diversions at key junctions to manage the flow, but the volume of vehicles continued to test road capacity through the weekend.

The State Transport Department said bus services were significantly ramped up to accommodate travellers.

In an official statement, the department said that 5,510 buses were operated from the Kilambakkam, CMBT and MMBT bus termini over the weekend, ferrying around 2.47 lakh commuters.

As of January 11, about 2.18 lakh passengers had already reserved tickets in government buses. Officials added that, in addition to 2,092 regular services operated daily, a total of 10,245 special buses have been planned between January 9 and 14 to meet the festive demand.

The increase in bookings was attributed to the recent induction of multi-axle SETC buses and the addition of new buses across transport corporations.

Private omnibus services, which typically carry around 60,000 passengers a day, also saw a spike in demand. Fares on several routes rose by nearly 25 per cent, though operators maintained that prices remained within the approved tariff.

For multi-axle Volvo omnibuses, fares were capped between Rs 3,600 and Rs 4,000 on select long-distance routes. With Pongal celebrations peaking over the coming days, authorities expect continued pressure on transport networks and have urged travellers to plan return journeys in advance.

US Vice Prez JD Vance, family arrives in India for landmark visit

New Delhi, April 21 (IANS) United States Vice President J.D. Vance, accompanied by his Indian-origin wife Usha Chilukuri Vance and their three children, arrived in India on Monday for a four-day official visit.

This marks a significant diplomatic engagement and the first trip by a sitting US Vice President to India in more than a decade. The last such visit was by Joe Biden in 2013.

Vice President Vance, who began his international tour with a stop in Italy on Friday, landed at the Air Force Station in Palam, New Delhi.

Upon his arrival, Vance was received by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour at the airport.

His visit underscores a renewed emphasis on strengthening US-India ties amid ongoing negotiations over a long-awaited bilateral trade agreement and deepening of strategic cooperation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to host the Vice President for formal talks, followed by a dinner at his official residence at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg on Monday evening.

The meeting will include key Indian officials, with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expected to be present during the discussions.

According to sources, the leaders will discuss trade-related matters, regional security, and avenues to boost technological and economic collaboration between the two countries.

Vance’s arrival in India comes at a time when talks over a bilateral trade deal — originally triggered by former President Donald Trump’s imposition of sweeping tariffs — have gained renewed momentum.

While the US had initially set a 26 per cent tariff on imports, India currently faces a reduced baseline levy of 10 per cent, which is the standard for most US trading partners except China, during a 90-day pause in the broader tariff rollout.

This will be the Vice President’s first-ever visit to India and his second bilateral engagement with Prime Minister Modi, following their initial meeting in Paris earlier this year during the AI Summit.

That meeting was followed by PM Modi’s visit to Washington for his first official meeting with the current US President after his return to office.

The Vice President is travelling with a five-member high-level US delegation, which includes representatives from the Pentagon and the State Department.

The delegation’s itinerary includes visits to Agra and Jaipur, underscoring the cultural dimension of the visit alongside strategic dialogue.

Vance’s wife, Usha Chilukuri Vance, who is of Indian origin, is also part of the trip with their children — Ewan, 7; Vivek, 4; and Mirabel, 2. Usha Vance’s family traces its roots to Andhra Pradesh. However, it remains unclear whether they will be meeting with any relatives during their stay in India.

This visit also marks the second high-profile trip to India by a senior official from the Trump administration during the current term.

In March, Tulsi Gabbard, who serves as the Director of National Intelligence, visited India and participated in the Raisina Dialogue while also holding meetings with Indian officials and the Prime Minister.

Vice President Vance’s presence in India after such a long gap reflects the significance both countries place on their evolving partnership.

His visit is expected to set the tone for further high-level engagements in the near future, especially in the context of growing global geopolitical shifts and economic realignments.

CM Dhami leads Uttarakhand’s first ‘Uniform Civil Code Day’ celebrations

Dehradun, Jan 27 (IANS) Uttarakhand marked its first ‘Uniform Civil Code Day’ on Tuesday, celebrating a significant milestone in the state’s history. The event, held at the Himalayan Cultural Centre in Garhi Cantt, saw Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami address a gathering and honour officials who played a crucial role in the formulation and implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state.

The Chief Minister began his speech by calling the day a “golden chapter” in Uttarakhand’s history, acknowledging the landmark step toward establishing social justice, equality, and constitutional values through the UCC.

CM Dhami highlighted that the code is a reflection of the Sanatan culture, which has always upheld principles of equality and justice, referencing Lord Shri Krishna’s teachings in the Bhagavad Gita: “I am equal to all living beings; I harbour neither hatred nor favouritism.”

Dhami emphasised that the implementation of the UCC fulfilled the vision of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and the framers of the Indian Constitution, who included the code under Article 44 in the directive principles of State Policy.

He also noted that the UCC was a part of the BJP’s election manifesto ahead of the 2022 Uttarakhand Assembly elections, with a strong commitment from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Chief Minister further detailed the legislative journey: The UCC Bill was passed in the State Assembly on February 7, 2024, and received presidential assent on March 11, 2024. After completing the necessary legal procedures, the UCC was formally implemented on January 27, 2025.

One of the key outcomes of the UCC, according to the Chief Minister, is the empowerment of women, particularly Muslim women in Uttarakhand. With the implementation of the UCC, practices such as halala, iddat, polygamy, child marriage, and triple talaq have been abolished.

Dhami proudly stated that since the UCC’s implementation, not a single case of polygamy or halala has been reported in the state, with Muslim women welcoming the reform. He pointed out that such social practices, which had previously perpetuated inequality, have no place in a modern, just society.

The Chief Minister reiterated that the UCC is not a law targeting any specific religion but is instead a measure to eliminate social evils and foster unity through equality.

Under the UCC, uniform laws govern marriage, divorce, inheritance, and property rights across all religions. Importantly, the law ensures that children, regardless of their parentage, have equal inheritance rights.

The UCC also mandates the registration of live-in relationships, with provisions to protect the safety, dignity, and rights of individuals involved, including ensuring that children born in such relationships are recognised as legitimate.

Dhami expressed pride in the successful implementation of the UCC, noting that the state has seen a significant increase in marriage registrations. Prior to the UCC’s introduction, the state registered an average of only 67 marriages per day. Now, that number has soared to over 1,400 daily registrations. More than 30 per cent of the state’s gram panchayats have achieved 100 per cent registration of married couples, and over 5 lakh applications have been processed with a 95 per cent resolution rate.

The Chief Minister also outlined recent amendments to the UCC, which include stringent provisions to annul marriages where identity is concealed or false information is provided. These provisions also ensure harsh penalties for fraud or coercion in marriage and live-in relationships.

Dhami underscored that the implementation of the UCC is a step towards uniting the nation.

Drawing on the legacy of leaders like Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee and Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, who advocated for the abrogation of Article 370 and the introduction of the UCC, the Chief Minister stated that the law represents the fulfillment of long-held national aspirations.

The Chief Minister concluded by highlighting that just as the River Ganga flows from Uttarakhand to nourish the nation, the implementation of the UCC in the state will inspire other regions to follow suit. He also dismissed misconceptions being spread about the law, particularly those related to domicile status and live-in registrations, asserting that the UCC is a law designed to protect the rights of all citizens.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Cabinet Ministers Ganesh Joshi and Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat, MP Naresh Bansal, MLAs, senior government officials, and members of the UCC committee.
