Cabinet expansion likely next week, all Ministers must focus on drought relief: Karnataka CM Shivakumar

Chitradurga, (Karnataka) July 25 (IANS) Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said on Saturday that the state Cabinet is likely to be expanded next week and called upon all Ministers to work collectively to address the drought situation across the state.

Speaking at the Bengaluru Regional Division-level Development progress review meeting held in Chitradurga, Shivakumar stressed the need for a united approach to governance and urged Ministers to prioritise drought management and public welfare.

“The Cabinet may be expanded next week. Once that happens, all Ministers must join hands and work together. We must collectively assess the drought situation across the state and ensure that farmers in villages do not suffer. This is our responsibility,” the Chief Minister said.

Earlier on Saturday, Shivakumar visited agricultural fields at Vaddikere village in Hiriyur taluk of Chitradurga district to assess the impact of drought on farmers.

Officials briefed him on the prevailing conditions.

Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara, Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre and MLA T. Raghumurthy accompanied him during the visit.

Emphasising administrative reforms, Shivakumar said the state government was working to give governance a new direction and called upon legislators and officials to function as “Team Karnataka”.

“We are trying to give a new shape to the government and administration. Legislators and officials must ensure that the government remains among the people. Governance should reach the doorstep of every citizen,” he added.

The Chief Minister highlighted the objectives of the newly established Praja Seva Department, saying that it was created to address public grievances more effectively.

He directed district in-charge Ministers to hold public grievance meetings in every Assembly constituency on the first and third Saturdays of each month.

He instructed Ministers to tour all constituencies irrespective of political affiliations and work with local legislators to resolve people’s concerns.

Shivakumar reiterated that district administrations could spend up to Rs 1 crore per Assembly constituency in rural areas to ensure drinking water supply and warned officials against any negligence.

He directed them to maintain transparency in all drought-relief measures, including recording GPS details of newly drilled borewells and documenting all related decisions.

“There should be no shortage of drinking water for people and livestock under any circumstances. Officials must also ensure adequate fodder supply and repair RO plants wherever necessary,” he said.

Appealing to farmers to exercise caution, the Chief Minister advised them not to sow crops in anticipation of future rainfall or reservoir releases.

“I have already appealed to farmers not to cultivate crops based on expectations of rainfall or water releases. If they proceed and incur losses, they will have to bear the responsibility. Officials must actively promote crop insurance,” he said.

Shivakumar noted that water levels in most reservoirs, except Almatti, remained poor and reiterated that Karnataka had informed the concerned committee that it was not in a position to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.

He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also spoken about the impact of El Nino and stressed that the warning should not be ignored.

He added that the state government had told the Prime Minister about Karnataka’s drought situation and that a delegation led by Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara would soon meet him to present the ground realities.

The Chief Minister also said the state government was examining the use of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds for rural development and school infrastructure projects.

He acknowledged that some Gruha Lakshmi scheme benefits had allegedly been transferred to fake accounts and said the matter was under review.

Shivakumar also indicated that the Karnataka Assembly session could commence on August 6 or during the second week of August, adding that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls had contributed to delays in convening the session.

Concluding his address, the Chief Minister assured legislators that they could approach him directly with any issues and expressed hope that the Chitradurga meeting would be as productive as the review meetings previously held in Kalaburagi and Belagavi.

Household savings in India surge due to ease of doing business, tax reforms: Minister

New Delhi, Dec 1 (IANS) The household savings in India increased from Rs 50.1 lakh crore in 2022-23 to Rs 54.61 lakh crore in 2023-24, the government said on Monday.

As a per cent of GDP, household savings declined from 18.6 per cent in 2022-23 to 18.1 per cent in 2023-24, as per National Account Statistics 2025 published by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Pankaj Chaudhary, Minister of State for Finance, replied to a question in Lok Sabha.

According to the minister, the government’s focus on ease of doing business, skilling, employment generation, inclusive human resource development as well as creation of infrastructure creates a congenial environment for growth of household income and savings.

“Additionally, the new income tax exemption for annual incomes up to Rs 12 lakh and the recent GST rate rationalisation measures are expected to boost household consumption, savings and investment,” he mentioned.

The government closely tracks the trends in key economic parameters, including household savings, along with their implications for economic growth and fiscal stability.

At present, the macroeconomic fundamentals of the Indian economy remain strong, supported by robust domestic demand, moderating inflation, improved corporate balance sheets and sustained fiscal discipline, said the minister.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said last week that the net financial assets of households went up to Rs 9.9 lakh crore or 6 per cent of GDP in FY25, compared to 5.3 per cent in previous fiscal (FY24). Meanwhile, financial liabilities of households dropped sharply to Rs 15.7 lakh crore in FY25 or 4.7 per cent of GDP compared to the previous year, FM Sitharaman said in an X post.

This is a sharp turnaround from just two years ago, when household savings slumped to 4.9 per cent of GDP in FY23 — lowest since early 1970s. The recovery suggests households are rebuilding financial buffers more quickly than expected as the post-pandemic income revival broadens.

Won’t trade ideology for power: Debabrata Saikia rejects defection buzz after Bordoloi exit​

Guwahati, March 18 (IANS) Assam Leader of Opposition and senior Congress figure Debabrata Saikia on Wednesday categorically dismissed any speculation about a possible defection to the BJP, asserting his steadfast commitment to the Congress party’s ideology and principles in the wake of former Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi’s recent resignation. ​

Bordoloi’s exit from the Congress and his subsequent move to join the BJP have triggered political debate in the state, with several leaders reacting to the development. ​

Describing the development as “regrettable,” Saikia acknowledged Bordoloi’s long association with the Congress, noting that the party had entrusted him with key responsibilities and positions over the years. ​

“The Congress gave him due respect and opportunities. His sudden departure raises concerns about political consistency and the sense of responsibility expected from senior leaders,” Saikia told reporters. ​

Reacting to remarks made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma suggesting that Saikia could also switch sides, the Congress leader rejected the claim outright, calling it “misleading” and politically motivated. ​

“My politics is not driven by the lure of power or position. It is rooted in ideology, values, and a deep commitment to public service,” he said, adding that his personal principles, shaped by his upbringing, remain non-negotiable. ​

Saikia stressed that maintaining public trust is central to his political journey and reaffirmed his resolve to serve the people with integrity. ​

“The support and goodwill of the people are my greatest strength. I will continue to work with honesty and dedication,” he added. ​

The remarks come at a time of heightened political activity in Assam, as parties intensify preparations and realignments ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, fuelling speculation over potential shifts and strategies within major political formations.

Bhupender Yadav praises hatching of Great Indian Bustard chick after a decade

New Delhi, March 28 (IANS) Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav, on Saturday, announced the birth of a Great Indian Bustard (GIB) chick in Gujarat after a decade, marking a milestone in the conservation of the endangered species, an official said.

“Gujarat witnessed the birth of a chick after a decade, in Kutch, through a novel conservation measure known as the Jumpstart Approach. The effort was planned a year back which was coordinated by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, along with the Forest Departments of Rajasthan and Gujarat and the Wildlife Institute of India,” an official statement said.

This is the first inter-state jump start initiative of the GIB in the country that was successfully executed in Gujarat, the statement added.

A captive-bred GIB egg from the conservation breeding programme in Rajasthan was transported by road for more than 19 hours in a handheld portable incubator and was successfully replaced in the nest on March 22.

In Gujarat, three female GIBs are surviving in the grasslands of Kutch, leaving no possibility of having a fertile egg in the wild.

It took an arduous 770-km road journey to transport an incubated egg to the desired nesting site in Kutch, which was undertaken without a break by creating a halt-free corridor from Sam (Rajasthan) to Naliya (Gujarat).

In the social media post, Union Minister Yadav noted that Project GIB was envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2011 to conserve the Great Indian Bustard in its natural habitats, including Gujarat, and was formally launched in 2016.

He said that the project has been making steady progress in strengthening conservation and recovery efforts for the species.

The Union Minister said that the number of birds in conservation breeding centres at Sam and Ramdevra in Rajasthan has reached 73, with the addition of five new chicks during the current breeding season.

He added that India is now moving ahead towards the rewilding of birds in the near future as part of long-term conservation planning.

Giving further details on the path-breaking initiative, Union Minister Yadav said that the female GIB tagged in August 2025 laid an infertile egg in Kutch, where the local population had lost all its males long ago.
