CM Adhikari lauds Kolkata Police STF for arrest of top Maoist leader Asim Mandal

Kolkata, Sep 17 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday congratulated the Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police for arresting wanted Maoist leader Asim Mandal alias Akash alias Timir alias Manoj from Patashpur in East Midnapore district earlier in the day.

In a statement posted on social media, the Chief Minister commended STF personnel for successfully tracking and apprehending Mandal, who served as a Central Committee member and Secretary of the West Bengal State Committee-I of the CPI (Maoist).

He described the operation as a major success, noting that the Maoist leader had allegedly managed to evade law enforcement agencies for more than 15 years across the forested regions of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha.

“I commend the Officers and Personnel of the @KolkataPolice STF in successfully tracking and apprehending Asim Mandal @ Akash, Central Committee Member and Secretary of the West Bengal State Committee-I, CPI (Maoist), from Lalat, Patashpur, Purba Medinipur,” the Chief Minister said.

“I want to make it categorically clear that the West Bengal Government will not tolerate any attempt to revive or expand the network of ‘Red Terror’ within our state borders. No extremist ideology will be allowed to jeopardize the safety & security of the People and jeopardize the development of our State. The law will take its strictest course to demolish any such audacious attempt,” the Chief Minister further said.

According to police sources, two bags containing Maoist literature, including books and booklets, as well as electronic communication devices, were recovered from Asim Mandal’s possession following his arrest.

Investigators said Akash’s wife, a resident of the Patashpur area and an alleged CPI (Maoist) activist, was arrested by the Kolkata Police STF in 2010 and is currently in judicial custody.

Police officials view the arrest as a significant breakthrough in efforts to dismantle the remnants of the Left-Wing Extremist network operating across the tribal and forested belts of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha.

An award of Rs 2.20 crore had earlier been announced for information leading to Asim Mandal’s capture.

A native of Fulchak village under Chandrakona Police Station in West Midnapore district, Mandal is said to have become involved in Left-Wing extremist activities during his student years in the 1980s. He later joined the People’s War Group and worked extensively in the Sarenga and Goaltor regions of West Bengal as well as the Gurabanda area of Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district.

Security agencies’ records show that nearly 55 serious criminal cases are registered against him across Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal. Several of these cases relate to attacks on security forces and armed encounters in Jharkhand.

Mamdal played a key role in the Lalgarh movement in West Bengal’s Jangalmahal region and was appointed Secretary of the party’s West Bengal State Committee in 2010. He also held responsibilities in the Bengal-Jharkhand-Odisha Regional Committee. Following the 2011 encounter killing of senior Maoist leader Kishanji, he largely remained underground, police sources said.

Monsoon drenches Mumbai; overnight rainfall reported in several parts

Mumbai, June 24 (IANS) Mumbai received heavy rainfall overnight as the monsoon finally set in in the financial capital of the country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert, valid for three hours, for Mumbai and Palghar early on Wednesday as heavy showers continued across the region.

The IMD has warned of thunderstorms, lightning, intense to very intense rainfall and winds of 40-60 kmph.

“Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and Intense to very Intense spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 40-60 kmph very likely to occur at isolated places,” the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said in a post on X, quoting the IMD.

Due to the incessant overnight rainfall, severe waterlogging was reported in several parts of the city. Average rainfall recorded by the weather department for the city was 78 mm.

In Thane, a tree fell on four vehicles — two four-wheelers and three two- wheelers. Following the incident, fire brigade personnel (with one fire tender) and staff from the Vartak Nagar Ward Committee Disaster Management Cell arrived at the scene.

The fallen tree was cut and removed with the assistance of the fire brigade personnel and disaster management staff present at the site, officials said.

Authorities advised people to exercise caution throughout the day.

The IMD has stated that conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to advance in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh. It further stated that these states are expected to witness more rain in the coming days.

“The southwest monsoon has further progressed into the remaining parts of the central Arabian Sea, additional areas of Maharashtra including Mumbai, the remaining parts of Telangana and Odisha, and more regions of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar,” the IMD said in a statement.

Additionally, according to the BMC, all major subways in Mumbai stayed open, and traffic movement was largely smooth. Suburban railway services ran as usual, and BEST bus operations also continued without interruption.

Centre inks contracts worth Rs 62,700 crore with HAL for supply of 156 LCH

New Delhi, March 28 (IANS) The government on Friday signed two contracts worth Rs 62,700 crore with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the supply of 156 Light Combat Helicopters (LCH), Prachand.

The first contract is for supply of 66 LCHs to the Indian Air Force (IAF) and second is for supply of 90 LCHs to the Indian Army, according to the Ministry of Defence.

The supply of these Helicopters will commence from the third year and will be spread over the next five years.

LCH is India’s first indigenously designed and developed combat helicopter having a capability of operating at an altitude of over 5,000 metres.

This helicopter has a large number of components designed & manufactured in India and it is planned to achieve an overall indigenous content of over 65 per cent during the execution of this procurement.

This will involve over 250 domestic companies mostly MSMEs and will generate over 8,500 direct and indirect jobs.

Meanwhile, the ministry also signed a contract with Metrea Management for Wet Leasing of one Flight Refuelling Aircraft (FRA) for providing Air to Air refuelling training to pilots of IAF and Indian Navy.

Metrea will provide FRA (KC135 Aircraft) within six months which will be the first FRA to be wet leased by IAF.

With signing of these three contracts, the total number of contracts signed by Ministry of Defence during 2024-25 reaches to 193 with overall contract value exceeding Rs 2,09,050 crore, which is the highest ever and nearly double the previous highest figure.

Out of these, the contracts to domestic industry are 177 (92 per cent) with contract value Rs 1,68,922 Crore (81 per cent).

On Thursday, the Ministry of Defence signed a contract with public sector Armoured Vehicle Nigam Limited for the procurement of Nag Missile System (NAMIS) tracked version of the anti-tank weapon platform and another deal with Force Motors Ltd and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd for around 5,000 light vehicles for the armed forces at a total cost of around Rs 2,500 crore.

These contracts under the “Buy Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured” category form part of the government’s strategy to promote self-reliance in defence production.

Maha ATS conducts raids in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad over alleged links to Pakistani gangster Shahzad Bhatti

New Delhi, July 14 (IANS) The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has launched a major operation in connection with alleged links to Pakistani gangster Shahzad Bhatti, with raids underway in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

Multiple ATS teams are conducting simultaneous operations across different cities in Maharashtra and have taken some suspected individuals into custody for questioning.

According to the Maharashtra ATS, Shahzad Bhatti, along with his associates, was allegedly using social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Telegram and WhatsApp to reach out to young people.

The ATS is carrying out the operation to investigate individuals allegedly connected with Shahzad Bhatti’s network.

A Maharashtra ATS official said that the teams are conducting the searches and questioning suspected persons as part of the ongoing action.

The operation is currently underway, and further details are awaited from the Maharashtra ATS.

Bhatti has emerged as the Inter-Services Intelligence’s latest operative tasked with carrying out a large-scale recruitment drive in India aimed at fuelling terrorism.

Intelligence inputs indicate that he has been running this recruitment network in India for several months.

Bhatti follows a shifting recruitment strategy to evade scrutiny. He focusses on one state at a time and, as soon as security agencies begin closing in on his network, shifts operations elsewhere. A few months ago, his recruitment drive was centred in Uttar Pradesh. After Intelligence agencies picked up the trail, he moved his operations to Maharashtra.

An Intelligence Bureau official said that Bhatti’s network, which is backed by ISI, has a distinct way of functioning. “They are not indulging in pan-India recruitments. They are targeting youth from one state at a time, and this helps them evade the security agencies,” the official said.
