Congress begins internal review after Assam poll setback: Gaurav Gogoi​

Guwahati, May 9 (IANS) Congress Member of Parliament and senior party leader Gaurav Gogoi on Saturday said the party has begun an internal review process following its disappointing performance in the recent Assam Assembly elections, while asserting that the state leadership has taken full responsibility for the setback.​

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with party leaders, Gogoi said the outcome of the 2026 Assembly polls was “extremely disappointing”, and the matter has already been communicated to the Congress high command.​

“The results of the recent Assembly polls are extremely disappointing. I have said before that we take full responsibility for it. We have also informed the high command about it, and it is now for the central leadership to decide the future course of action regarding organisational restructuring and the next steps,” Gogoi said.​

He added that the party has initiated consultations with former MLAs, election candidates, and newly elected legislators to understand the reasons behind the poor showing and gather grassroots-level feedback.​

“At the same time, we have already started an internal review process. We are speaking to our former MLAs, contested candidates, and newly elected MLAs to assess what feedback they are receiving from the ground and what needs to be done in the future,” he said.​

According to Gogoi, Saturday’s meeting marked the second phase of the review exercise, during which district-level leaders and senior party functionaries were consulted.​

“Today is the second step, where we have called our district leaders and some senior leaders. Over the next month, we will try to identify the real reasons that can explain the 2026 result,” he stated.​

The Congress suffered a major setback in the Assembly elections, as the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance comfortably retained power in Assam.​

The result has triggered discussions within the Congress over organisational weaknesses, strategy failures, and leadership restructuring ahead of future political battles in the state.​

Party insiders indicated that the review process may also focus on strengthening booth-level structures and reconnecting with grassroots workers across districts.​

The threat, issued by a user named Chandraveer Singh, announced a reward of Rs 1 crore for anyone who shoots the MP.

The post has since gone viral, sparking widespread outrage and concern among Roat’s supporters and the local tribal community.

The incident occurred during a press conference in Udaipur on Tuesday, where MP Roat criticised the functioning of the Nai police station, alleging police involvement in falsely implicating tribal individuals in a murder case to seize tribal lands.

As the press conference was being broadcast live on Facebook, Chandraveer Singh posted a death threat in the comments, offering a Rs 1 crore reward for anyone who assassinates the MP.

The user also made serious allegations, accusing Roat of being a Christian and “spoiling the atmosphere” in the tribal community.

The comment quickly went viral, drawing sharp reactions from netizens and community members. The Facebook account used to make the threat has since been deleted, complicating efforts to trace the individual.

Taking the threat seriously, MP Rajkumar Roat is preparing to file formal complaints with the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Inspector General (IG).

He has also expressed grave concern for his personal safety and that of his family.

“This is not just a threat to my life but a threat to democracy and social harmony,” Roat said, demanding strict legal action against the accused and enhanced security measures for himself.

The incident has triggered tension in the Banswara and Dungarpur tribal belt, areas that form the core support base of the Bharat Adivasi Party.

The local residents and supporters have staged protests and strongly condemned the threat, calling it an attack on the voice of marginalised communities.

Despite the seriousness of the situation, no official statement has yet been made by the administration.

However, sources indicate that cybercrime and intelligence units are monitoring the situation closely. Supporters have taken to social media to express solidarity with the MP, while political leaders from tribal regions have called for a swift investigation and accountability.

Shiv Sena leader meets family of deceased flight attendant Pinky Mali, shares their grief

Mumbai, Jan 29 (IANS) Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC on Thursday visited the family of Pinky Mali, a flight crew attendant who recently lost her life while on duty, at their residence to express condolences and pay tribute.

Speaking to IANS, Shaina NC emphasized the need to honor the deceased flight attendant’s family along with nation-wide tributes being paid to Ajit Dada, whose death in the same tragic incident sent shockwaves in the political circles and left entire Sabarmati in deep mourning.

“We all pay our tribute to Ajit Dada, but I feel the Mali family should also be given the same tribute, especially the girl who lost her life while performing her duty,” she said.

“We all should stand with the Mali family and offer them our condolences. When the last rites are performed, the key takeaway from this entire case should be how to understand what went wrong and ensure that such incidents do not happen again in the future,” she added.

Pinky Mali, a flight attendant from Worli in Mumbai, lost her life in the plane crash at Baramati in which Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar was also on board. Her grieving father, Shivkumar Mali, on Wednesday said that his only wish was to receive his daughter’s body so that he could perform her last rites.

Apart from Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, the people onboard the plane, Learjet 45 aircraft (registration VT-SSK) operated by VSR, included a personal security officer (PSO), Vidip Jadhav; a flight attendant, Pinky Mali; and two crew members — a Pilot-in-Command (PIC), Sumit Kapur and a Second-in-Command (SIC) Shambhavi Pathak.

The leader’s visit comes amid larger public debate over the workplace safety and the responsibilities of employers to protect their staff.

While much of the media coverage has focused on the high-profile aspects of the incident, Shaina NC stressed that equal attention must be given to the families of those directly affected, whose grief often remains in the shadows.

Devotion marks first Monday of Sawan as thousands pray in Ujjain, Haridwar temples

New Delhi, July 14 (IANS) On the first Monday of the sacred month of Sawan, a wave of devotion swept across India as thousands of devotees thronged major Shiva temples, Ujjain’s Shri Mahakaleshwar, Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, and Haridwar’s Daksheswar Mahadev Temple, to offer prayers, participate in ‘Jalabhishek’ rituals, and attend special aartis.

At the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, crowds began gathering in the early hours for the world-famous ‘Bhasma Aarti’, a ritual steeped in centuries of tradition. The temple opened its doors at 2.30 a.m., with darshan continuing throughout the day. A grand city procession of Lord Mahakal is scheduled for 4 p.m., drawing pilgrims and tourists alike.

Mahesh, a priest at Mahakaleshwar Temple, remarked on the day’s significance: “The first Monday of Sawan holds special importance, especially at the Mahakaleshwar Temple, a unique Jyotirlinga known worldwide. The temple’s famous Bhasma Aarti attracts devotees from afar.”

A devotee from Ujjain shared his spiritual joy: “I have come to see Mahakal after a long time. I had planned to visit on Shivratri Pradosh, but due to some reasons, I couldn’t. Today, I had a very fulfilling darshan, and it felt very good to see Baba.”

In Omkareshwar, another sacred Jyotirlinga site in Madhya Pradesh, thousands of devotees offered jalabhishek with Narmada water during the early morning hours, continuing the Sawan tradition with deep reverence.

Meanwhile, in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, massive crowds marked the day with religious fervour under strict security arrangements. Personnel from the police, PAC, RAF, SSB, and SDRF, along with dog squads and bomb detection units, ensured the safety of pilgrims at key Shiva temples.

Devotees bathed in the Ganges and began their Kanwar Yatra with chants of “Bol Bam” filling the air.

A devotee at Daksheswar or Daksh Mahadev Temple in Haridwar shared, “Today is the first Monday of Sawan, the most important day. The first Kanwariyas arrive at our Daksh Temple, as it is considered a temple of truth. Here, the first ritual bath is performed before proceeding to Har Ki Pauri for the Kanwar journey.”

One of the most moving moments of the day came from Sachin, a specially-abled devotee from Modinagar, who travelled 170 kilometres on his wife’s shoulders to offer jalabhishek at Daksh Mahadev Temple.

In an emotional statement, Sachin said, “My wife carried me along with her for this 170 km journey. I don’t know what kind of fate I have, but today I am sitting on my life partner’s shoulders. The burden that should have been on my shoulders, she has carried on hers.”
