Devotees leave for Amarnath Yatra with faith, enthusiasm; praise security, facilities

Jammu, July 2 (IANS) Brimming with devotion and excitement, hundreds of pilgrims gathered at the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu on Thursday as the first batch of devotees set off for the annual Amarnath Yatra. Expressing unwavering faith, the pilgrims said they had no fear and lauded the extensive security arrangements and facilities put in place by the administration for the sacred journey.

Speaking to IANS before their departure, several devotees and saints described the atmosphere as spiritually charged and said they had been eagerly waiting for the pilgrimage throughout the year.

“The weather has been very pleasant, and the security arrangements are excellent. There is nothing to fear. This is my second Amarnath Yatra,” said one devotee.

Another pilgrim said, “I am very excited. I am eagerly looking forward to the darshan and feel truly blessed to be here. We will offer our prayers with complete devotion.”

A devotee said the first day of the pilgrimage held special significance.

“We wait the entire year for this day and the opportunity to have the first-day darshan. In a short while, we are departing from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp for the holy cave shrine. There is no fear or anxiety among the devotees,” the pilgrim said.

A saint said, “We are extremely excited. This is the first stage of our Kailash Yatra, and the final stage will also be in Jammu at Harmukh Kailash when that pilgrimage begins. This is an age-old tradition that has been followed since ancient times. The security arrangements are excellent, and the overall arrangements for the pilgrims are very good.”

A first-time pilgrim said, “This is my first Amarnath Yatra. I am witnessing tremendous enthusiasm among the devotees. The support and assistance being provided by the administration and the Army personnel are excellent.”

Another saint said, “The journey has been a wonderful experience so far. It is a blessing to travel with fellow saints and devotees, and this is my first opportunity to have the darshan of Baba Amarnath. Excellent facilities have been provided for the saints, and such dedicated service is offered every year.”

A saint who has undertaken the pilgrimage for over three decades said, “We have been doing the Amarnath Yatra for the past 32 years. The arrangements made by the government are very good, including facilities for elderly and specially abled pilgrims.”

Another saint from Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh said, “This is my third pilgrimage to seek the blessings of Baba Barfani. The arrangements are excellent, and the government has made comprehensive preparations for the Yatra.”

Earlier in the day, J&K Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha flagged off the first batch of pilgrims for the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra-2026 from Jammu, marking the formal commencement of the annual pilgrimage amid elaborate security arrangements and comprehensive logistical preparations across the union territory.

The flag-off ceremony witnessed enthusiastic participation from devotees, officials and security personnel, as the first convoy of pilgrims embarked on the sacred journey to the revered Amarnath cave shrine.

“Har Har Mahadev! The sacred journey to the holy abode of Baba Barfani begins! Flagged off the first batch of pilgrims for Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2026 from Jammu’s Bhagwati Nagar Base Camp. Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra is a profound spiritual awakening. Every step taken on this holy path is a testament to unwavering faith and surrender to the Baba Amarnath. Wishing all devotees a safe, blissful and spiritually fulfilling journey. May Lord Shiva bless us all,” wrote L-G Sinha on X

Jammu, Dec 17 (IANS) Lt Governor (L-G) Manoj Sinha claimed that terrorism and corruption are big challenges in J&K, while some educated people joining terrorism is a worrisome development.

“Corruption and terrorism are big challenges in J&K, while some educated people joining terrorism is a worrisome development. However, J&K will be made terrorism and corruption-free,” claimed the L-G while attending the concluding function of the workshop on Basohli paintings held in IIM Jammu.

He cited the example of the Northeast, further claiming that terrorism had been “completely” wiped out there, while the Maoism problem has also been largely “contained”.

“The security forces alone cannot contain this. Everyone must make a collective effort,” he said.

The L-G also claimed that the top commanders of all militant organisations have been killed in J&K, while the local recruitment has ended.

He also said that Pakistanis are trying to facilitate infiltration, but they are not getting any success.

“Those who are already here will be killed soon. I can assure you. We should stop doing ‘Andar wala’ and ‘Bahar wala’. This will not serve our purpose and will lead to loss for J&K,” he said.

At the concluding function of the workshop on Basohli paintings, national and local artists attended the workshop, while the students of the IIM showed keen interest in the workshop.

More than 400 paintings will be permanently displayed in the IIM campus to highlight the relevance and the artistic excellence of Basohli paintings.

The L-G is also regularly chairing security review meetings, adding that the security forces and J&K Police are carrying out aggressive operations against militants, their Over Ground Workers (OGWs) and sympathisers to dismantle their support system in J&K.

Drug smugglers and drug peddlers are also on the scanners of the security forces, as it is believed that funds generated by these unlawful activities are used to sustain terrorism.

Deliberate conspiracy underway to distort contribution of national heroes: Kharge

Ahmedabad, April 8 (IANS) Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday claimed that a deliberate conspiracy was underway to distort the contributions of national heroes.

After opening the Extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Ahmedabad, Kharge said: “A false narrative was being built to pit Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel against each other, as if they were adversaries.”

Asserting that the two leaders were two sides of the same coin, he recalled a speech by Patel delivered on March 7, 1937, at Gujarat Vidyapith, when Nehru was Congress President and the state’s youth wanted him to campaign during provincial elections.

“Patel had said, ‘The day Gujarat wins this electoral battle and proves its loyalty to the Congress, that day we shall welcome Congress President Nehru with pride’. This shows how deeply Patel believed in Nehru’s leadership,” Kharge noted.

He sharply criticised the current political environment, warning against “rising communal division” and “corporate control” over national resources.

“On one hand, efforts are being made to divert public attention from core issues by spreading communal hatred. On the other hand, oligarchic monopolies are capturing the country’s resources and threatening to dominate governance,” he said.

He credited Patel’s leadership during the 1931 Karachi session for shaping the soul of the country’s Constitution through the resolution on Fundamental Rights.

“For the past several years, efforts are being made to malign the Congress – a party with 140 years of history in nation-building and sacrifice – by those who have little to show in terms of their own achievements or contribution to the freedom movement,” he said.

Invoking the legacies of Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Dadabhai Naoroji – three iconic leaders born on Gujarat’s soil who once led the Congress and helped shape India’s political and moral foundations, Kharge said they not only led the Congress but illuminated its path.

“Gandhiji gave us the unshakable weapons of truth and non-violence to fight injustice, tools no power can withstand,” Kharge stated.

In December 1924, Gandhi ji presided over the Congress Session in Belgaum, Karnataka – my home state. We celebrated this centenary with due reverence on December 26 last year.”

With the national convention returning to Gujarat after 64 years- the last one held in Bhavnagar in 1961 – Kharge said it was only fitting that the party reflect on its ideological roots and historical role in shaping modern India.

Reminding the gathering of Gujarat’s proud legacy of grassroots struggle, he said: “Just as Champaran Satyagraha under Gandhi ji’s leadership strengthened the Congress in rural India, the Bardoli Satyagraha and farmers’ movements led by Sardar Patel remain immortal in our history.”

Kharge highlighted the upcoming 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on October 31, calling him “the architect of India’s unity”, echoing Pandit Nehru’s description of Patel’s unifying role.

Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi were also present on the occasion.

With over 3,000 delegates in attendance, including chief ministers of Congress-ruled states, state unit presidents, and senior leaders, the two-day conclave is expected to craft the party’s roadmap for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Govt procured record 1 crore 92 lakh metric tonnes of pulses: Agriculture Minister

New Delhi, Feb 14 (IANS) During 10 years of the UPA government, only 6 lakh metric tonnes of pulses were procured and in contrast, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government has procured 1 crore 92 lakh metric tonnes of pulses, according to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

He announced that 100 per cent procurement of tur (pigeon pea), masoor (lentil) and urad (black gram) will be ensured.

“Whatever quantity farmers produce and wish to sell, the Centre will procure in full,” said the minister.

Chouhan noted that while India had 38 per cent of the global area under pulses cultivation, its share in production was only 28 per cent, reflecting low productivity due to old seed varieties, low seed replacement rates and adverse weather.

Many farmers had shifted to other crops. Until 2016, India was the largest importer of pulses.

“Through improved technology, advanced varieties, scientific research, farmer support and policy backing, a ‘Pulses Revolution’ began. As a result, in 2021–22, pulses production reached a record 27.30 million tonnes,” the minister informed the Parliament.

Under the Self-Reliance in Pulses Mission, provisions include development of improved seed varieties, higher seed replacement rates, farmer training, cluster approach, free mini-kits, demonstration plots, assistance up to Rs 10,000 per hectare, transparent procurement and support up to Rs 25 lakh for setting up dal mills.

Chouhan stated in the Rajya Sabha that PM Modi took the historic decision to create agricultural infrastructure worth over Rs 1 lakh crore under the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund, ensuring that farmers’ produce can be safely stored.

Under this scheme, 44,243 Custom Hiring Centres, 25,854 Primary Processing Centres, 25,565 Farm Harvest Automation Units, 17,779 Warehouses, 4,201 Sorting and Grading Units, infrastructure for Smart and Precision Agriculture at 3,549 locations, and 2,827 Cold Storages have been established, he informed.

Because of these modern structures, losses of crops, fruits and vegetables have been reduced by 5 per cent to 15 per cent.

Farmers are now able to store their produce safely and obtain better prices instead of being forced to sell immediately after harvest, said the minister.
