Diaspora is living bridge between India and Uzbekistan: PM Modi

Tashkent, Aug 30 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the Indian diaspora is a living bridge between India and Uzbekistan as he was greeted by a large gathering of the Indian community in Tashkent during his bilateral visit to the Central Asian nation.

“Overwhelmed by the warmth and affection of the Indian community in Tashkent. Our diaspora is a living bridge between India and Uzbekistan, strengthening the bonds of friendship between our nations,” PM Modi said on Saturday on social media platform X.

He also appreciated the Indian-Uzbek fusion cultural performances during the welcome, and said that it showcased a deep cultural connect.

“A captivating fusion of Indian and Uzbek musical traditions! The Tabla blends beautifully with the Doira and Chang, showcasing the deep cultural connect between India and Uzbekistan,” Prime Minister Modi said, sharing a glimpse of a Tabla performance on X.

A few women from the Indian community also tied a rakhi to PM Modi’s hand as he was greeting the Indian community members.

He also witnessed cultural performances by artists. PM Modi was seen intriguingly observing dance performances by children and shook their hands after the performance.

Earlier, PM Modi visited the Yangi Uzbekistan Monument and said that it reflects the aspirations and progress of the Uzbek people.

“Upon landing in Tashkent, went to lay a wreath at the Yangi Uzbekistan Monument with President Mirziyoyev. The Yangi Uzbekistan Monument reflects the aspirations and progress of the Uzbek people. Glad to begin my visit by coming here,” he noted on X.

PM Modi was accompanied by Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev as both leaders examined the artwork representing Uzbek culture and history at the Yangi Uzbekistan Park.

PM Modi thanked President Mirziyoyev for the warm welcome at Tashkent airport as he began his two-day State Visit to the Central Asian nation.

In a special gesture, Mirziyoyev travelled to the airport and received PM Modi, highlighting the friendship between both countries that has grown immensely over the last 12 years.

“Landed in Tashkent to a warm welcome by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Grateful to him for the special gesture. This is my fourth visit to Uzbekistan, reflecting the depth and growing momentum of our bilateral relations,” PM Modi said on X after landing in Tashkent.

The Armed Forces Veterans Day marks the birth anniversary of the Late Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa, who retired on this day in 1953.

A towering figure in India’s military history, Field Marshal Cariappa, the First Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) of the Indian Army, led the forces to victory in the 1947 war and laid the foundation for an enduring legacy of service, discipline, and patriotism.

This day is dedicated to honouring and recognising the brave soldiers who served in the Indian Armed Forces.

A series of events and outreach programmes will be organised across the country to mark the day.

The Defence Minister will attend the main event at Manekshaw Centre in Delhi Cantt. This will be attended by veterans residing in Delhi/NCR.

The day will be commemorated across the country at 34 Rajya Sainik Boards in States & UTs and various locations pan-India by 434 Zila Sainik Boards.

These events will include veterans’ rallies, establishment of grievance redressal counters and facilitation help desks by System for Pension Administration – Raksha (SPARSH), the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) and the Record Offices of the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force to help address concerns of veterans and their dependents.

Employment agencies, defence and Government Welfare Organisations & Banks will also set up stalls to provide information and assistance to veterans & their families.

AIADMK opposes waste-to-energy plant in Chennai, to hold protest on June 6

Chennai, May 26 (IANS) AIADMK General Secretary and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Edappadi K. Palaniswami has announced that his party will stage a protest on June 2 against the proposed waste-to-energy (WTE) plant at the Kodungaiyur dump yard in North Chennai.

The demonstration will be led by the party’s women’s wing secretary and former Minister B. Valarmathi near the post office opposite the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Zone 4 office from 10 a.m.

Palaniswami said the WTE project threatens public health and negatively impacts the lives of people in the surrounding neighbourhoods.

“The project poses a serious risk to residents living near the dump yard and could worsen the already precarious public health situation in the area,” he said.

He further urged the DMK-led state government to expedite the construction of a long-pending graveyard in Kodungaiyur and to complete the ongoing infrastructure projects in Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar at the earliest.

The AIADMK’s protest adds to growing opposition against the project. Notably, the CPI(M), an ally of the ruling DMK, has also come out strongly against the plant.

On May 15, members of the CPI(M)’s North Chennai district unit held a demonstration near the Kodungaiyur dump yard, calling for the immediate withdrawal of the project. CPI(M) members alleged that the project was approved without proper public consultation and warned of potential health and environmental hazards. They pointed out that the existing dump yard is already prone to frequent fires and emits toxic fumes, making life unbearable for residents in the densely populated locality.

Installing a WTE incinerator would only exacerbate these issues, they said.

Protesters also criticised the state government for failing to enforce the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) norms, which require manufacturers to manage waste generated from their products. They argued that sustainable solid waste management solutions have not been pursued and that incineration is a short-sighted approach.

Those opposing the project have cited a case study from Ivry-sur-Seine near Paris, where an incinerator was linked to dangerously high levels of dioxins in soil and moss samples near schools.

A Paris-based environmental NGO, Collectif 3R, backed these claims in a letter shared with the Federation of North Chennai Residents Welfare Associations (FNCRWA). Ironically, officials from the GCC, including Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran, had recently visited Paris to study WTE models, including the Ivry-sur-Seine plant.

Protests against the Kodungaiyur project have been mounting, with various civil society groups launching a signature campaign.

In a symbolic move, protesters also distributed miniature globes to children, representing their role as future custodians of a pollution-free planet.

As of now, the GCC has not issued a formal response to the rising public outcry.

With tensions escalating, the June 2 protest promises to further spotlight the growing clash between urban waste management policies and environmental justice in Chennai’s marginalised northern neighbourhoods.

Punjab CM seeks special Central incentives on lines of Himachal

Chandigarh, June 26 (IANS) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday presented state’s case before the team of Niti Aayog and solicited its support to ensure comprehensive development on the one hand and safeguard the state’s interest on the other.

During deliberations with the team led by member Ramesh Chand and Program Director Sanjeet Singh, the Chief Minister said “it is high time that the Aayog should generously help the state in preserving its rich legacy in terms of water and agriculture”.

He said the state shares 553 km of the international border with Pakistan and six border districts — Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Ferozepur and Fazilka.

However, Mann said special incentives to Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir by the Central government had adversely impacted the economy of border districts in Punjab.

The Chief Minister said border districts of Punjab need to be supported on the lines of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir to revitalise the state’s trade and industrial sector.

Seeking a special incentive package for border districts, he batted for establishment of agro food processing zone in each border district of Punjab with a special focus on the basmati rice industry and horticultural produce like litchi and others.

Mann also advocated upgradation of existing focal points in border districts and establishing an exhibition-cum-convention centre in Amritsar.

The Chief Minister also sought PLI scheme for the agro sector, tax benefits for textile sector, freight subsidy for industry and subsidized interest rate on term loans and working capital in border districts.

He also underscored the need for upward revision of compensation to farmers having land between the international border and border fence, asserting that more than 17,000 acres of land fall in between them.

Mann said the current compensation is given to farmers at a rate of Rs 10,000 per acre per year and that should be enhanced Rs 30,000 per acre annually, adding instead of sharing between the Centre and the state this should be totally paid by the Centre as “these brave hearts are working for making country self-reliant in food production”.
