Farm tourism, homestays to create new jobs for youth in Haryana

Chandigarh, April 22 (IANS) The Haryana government aims to take tourism in the state to new heights through farm tourism and homestays, which will create new employment opportunities for the youth, officials said.

“To achieve this, issues faced by farm tourism and homestay operators will be resolved on a priority basis,” Amit Kumar Agrawal, Haryana Commissioner and State Tourism Department Secretary, said on Tuesday.

At a meeting here with farm tourism and homestay operators, Agrawal said the state government is making efforts to promote tourism activities in the state.

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini is personally taking keen interest in the development of farm tourism and homestays in the state, the Haryana Commissioner and State Tourism Department Secretary was quoted as saying.

During the meeting, farm tourism and homestay operators apprised the department of issues related to various departments and requested their resolution.

They said that the global annual market for farm tourism and homestays is Rs 5,000 crore and is continuously growing.

“If the Haryana government addresses the challenges faced by this sector, the state can achieve significant progress in this field,” they added.

The operators also highlighted difficulties related to necessary facilities and approvals required from different departments in detail.

Agrawal directed operators to submit their issues in writing within the next five days.

Based on these inputs, a comprehensive farm tourism and homestay policy will be formulated in coordination with all departments and will be presented for Cabinet approval.

Once implemented, it will ensure smooth functioning of these services.

Additionally, services related to this sector will be notified under the Right to Service Act to ensure timely delivery within a stipulated period.

Agrawal said the state government is also studying policies implemented by other states related to agro-tourism and homestays to make Haryana’s policy more effective.

He added that as per the directions of the Chief Minister, tourism and hospitality will be promoted on a par with other industries in the state to generate maximum employment opportunities.

He also told that the Central government has included farm tourism and homestays under the ease of doing business framework.

K’taka Contractors’ Association warns Cong govt of protests on pending Rs 33,000 crore dues

Bengaluru, Oct 17 (IANS) The State Contractors’ Association on Friday urged the Congress-led government in Karnataka to release Rs 33,000 crore in pending dues to contractors and warned that if the money was not released, they would halt all works across the state and stage a large-scale protest.

Addressing a press conference in Bengaluru, the State Contractors’ Association President R. Manjunath said, “The Congress leaders assured us that if they came to power, they would resolve contractors’ issues. Now, they are not clearing dues. Contractors are left with no option but to consider extreme measures.”

He added that wives and children of contractors are constantly reaching out to the association. Out of a total of Rs 52,000 crore in pending bills, a few departments have released some money, leaving Rs 33,000 crore still unpaid. “We will wait for another month. If the money is not released, we will launch a strong agitation,” he warned.

Manjunath further alleged, “Congress leaders had earlier claimed there would be no commission for issuing ‘NOCs’ to contractors. We have brought to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s notice that under his government, higher commissions are being collected.” He clarified, “We have not complained to the CM about the exact proportion of commissions, whether 40, 60, or 80 per cent.”

He added, “We do not want conflict with the state government and aim to resolve the issue amicably. We will meet all ministers of the concerned departments and convey our deadline. Under this government, tenders are allotted through a package system, benefiting only a few large contractors, while small contractors are unable to secure work. In some cases, a single contractor is allotted work worth Rs 100 crore.”

Responding to the Contractors’ Association president’s allegation that the commission racket continues under the Congress government, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said in Mysuru on Friday that those making such claims should approach the court. He maintained that the allegations are being made deliberately against the government.

Earlier, at the beginning of October, the Karnataka State Contractors’ Association had written to CM Siddaramaiah alleging 80 per cent commission and nepotism in state contracts by ministers and leaders.

The BJP Karnataka unit slammed the Congress-led government for running a 40 per cent campaign against the previous government led by Basavaraj Bommai and demanded the resignation of CM Siddaramaiah over the 80 per cent allegations. The association had also sent the letter to the Congress high command.

Former Indian footballer and ex-MLA Dipendu Biswas returns to Trinamool ahead of Assembly polls

Kolkata, Feb 22 (IANS) Former Indian footballer and former Basirhat Dakshin Assembly MLA, Dipendu Biswas, returned to the Trinamool Congress on Sunday.

Along with him, several district leaders, including Basirhat No. I Block Congress President Quader Sardar and Basirhat Municipality’s former Vice Chairman Parthasarathy Basu joined the ruling party.

The return of Biswas to the Trinamool camp ahead of the Assembly elections is quite significant. There are speculations that he might be given a ticket to contest the upcoming elections.

The former Indian footballer had been associated with Trinamool for a long time. The Trinamool gave him a ticket in the 2016 Assembly elections, and he won the election from the Basirhat Dakshin constituency. However, in the 2021 Assembly polls, the Trinamool leadership decided not to give him a ticket.

Angered by this, Biswas changed his jersey and joined the BJP ahead of the 2021 Assembly polls. However, the saffron camp also did not give him a ticket to contest the election. But, he was made a permanent member of the party’s state committee. Despite this, he left the BJP within just a few months, sending his resignation letter to the then state BJP President Dilip Ghosh and the state office. Now, after four years, Biswas returned to the Trinamool.

On Sunday, he was officially inducted into the Trinamool by the party’s Basirhat leadership. After his induction, Biswan admitted that his decision to leave the Trinamool was a mistake.

“I became a footballer after fighting a lot. So fighting is my constant companion. It was a mistake to leave the party and change camps,” he said.

The former MLA also explained why he decided to return. “I am returning to the Trinamool Congress after being a supporter of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the development she is doing in Basirhat.”

Responding to queries whether he would contest the Assembly elections again, he said: “I will fulfil whatever responsibility which will be given to me by the party.”

DPS in Delhi’s Dwarka receives bomb threat, classes shifted to online mode

New Delhi, Dec 20 (IANS) Yet another bomb threat was reported on Friday, this time at Delhi Public School (DPS) in Dwarka, marking the sixth such incident in the national Capital in just ten days.

The school authorities informed the fire department at 5:15 A.M., prompting the dispatch of police personnel, fire brigade teams, and bomb squad units to the campus.

As a precautionary measure, the school was evacuated, and classes were shifted to the online mode.

This incident follows similar threats earlier in the week. On Tuesday, Indian Public School in South Delhi and Crescent Public School in North West Delhi also received bomb threats, causing widespread panic.

Last Friday, six schools, including Bhatnagar Public School (Paschim Vihar), Cambridge School (Sriniwaspuri), DPS (East of Kailash), South Delhi Public School (Defence Colony), Delhi Police Public School (Safdarjung Enclave), and Venkatesh Public School (Rohini), were targeted via email.

The threatening emails warned of imminent bomb blasts on December 13 and 14, mentioning potential targets such as school gatherings for parent-teacher meetings and sports day activities.

The emails claimed involvement by a “dark web group” and included chilling details about how the bombs were allegedly placed to maximise harm while sparing structural damage.

Authorities confirmed that all previous threats, including the one on December 9 targeting schools in RK Puram and Paschim Vihar, were hoaxes.

However, as the authorities cannot take any chances with the security of the schoolchildren, parents, teachers and other staff, all these incidents caused significant disruption, with students being sent home and the premises being thoroughly searched.

On December 11, over 40 schools in Delhi received similar threats demanding ransom, though no explosives were found in any case.

The Delhi High Court has taken note of the recurring hoaxes and directed the Delhi government and Delhi Police to prepare a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to handle such emergencies.

Authorities have been instructed to submit a comprehensive action plan by January 2024 to ensure swift and effective responses to future threats.
