Gujarat CM’s Rakhi gift to 14 women MLAs: Rs 28 crore grant for infra works in constituencies

Gandhinagar, Aug 27 (IANS) Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday announced a special development grant of Rs 28 crore for road and infrastructure works in the constituencies represented by 14 women legislators, with each MLA to receive Rs two crore.

The allocation was announced as a special “Raksha Bandhan gift” and is intended to support local infrastructure projects based on the priority requirements of the respective constituencies.

“Special Gift to Women Legislator Sisters on the Occasion of the Sacred Raksha Bandhan Festival..,’ wrote CM Patel on his X handle.

Officials said the funds would be used for road infrastructure and other development works. Of the 14 women legislators covered by the decision, nine represent urban constituencies while five represent rural constituencies.

The grants are expected to allow the legislators to take up works addressing local requirements in roads and related infrastructure. The state government said the projects would improve connectivity and ease of movement for residents in the constituencies.

The allocation is also aimed at advancing local infrastructure development and enabling the women legislators to address priority development needs more effectively.

The decision comes as Gujarat marks Raksha Bandhan, a festival traditionally associated with the bond between brothers and sisters. Rather than providing a direct benefit to the legislators, the special grant is earmarked for development works in the constituencies they represent.

According to the official statement, the road and infrastructure projects to be taken up through the grants will be identified according to the priority needs of each constituency.

The grant is specifically linked to road and other infrastructure development and is to be utilised for works within the respective constituencies of the women legislators.

Earlier in the day, women from different communities and sections of society tied rakhis to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel at Lok Bhavan in Gandhinagar.

Women associated with social organisations, charitable institutions, the Brahma Kumaris and organisations working for persons with disabilities participated in the celebrations.

They tied rakhis to CM Patel and offered prayers for his good health and long life.

CM Patel welcomed the women who had gathered for the occasion and accepted their blessings and good wishes.

J&K braces for heavy rain/snowfall for next 3 days

Srinagar, Feb 25 (IANS) Jammu and Kashmir braced for heavy rain/snow as the MET department issued an advisory on Tuesday cautioning the authorities of inclement weather for three days.

An advisory sent to the Divisional Commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu divisions by the MET Department said, “A fresh active Western Disturbance (WD) is most likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas from the evening of February 25 to February 28.

“Under the influence of this weather system, widespread moderate rain/snow/thunderstorm is expected at most places of Jammu and Kashmir. Light to moderate rain/snow would first commence over places of north and central Kashmir on (evening/night) of February 25 and thereafter gradual increase in intensity and distribution throughout Jammu and Kashmir,” it said.

The advisory said the weather system may disrupt air and surface transportation.

In its warning, the MET office said, “Middle and higher reaches of Kashmir and hilly areas Jammu most likely to receive moderate to heavy snowfall while few higher reaches of south Kashmir and Chenab Valley may receive heavy to very heavy snowfall, particularly on February 27 and 28.

Farmers have been advised to suspend agricultural activity during this period. Landslides/shooting stones/mudslides at vulnerable places are possible. The minimum temperature was 4.9 in Srinagar, minus 1.3 in Gulmarg and minus 0.3 in Pahalgam.

Jammu city had 13.5, Katra town 12.7, Batote 7.5, Banihal 3.7 and Bhaderwah 4 as minimum temperature today. Due to 80 per cent deficit rainfall in J&K during January and February, all the rivers are running at their lowest discharge level this time while many springs in Kashmir valley have dried up. Those still functional are running with very low discharge, thereby creating shortages of potable water in many places in Kashmir.

Unless the higher reaches receive heavy snowfall before the end of the winter season, the prolonged dry spell threatens a thirsty summer for the locals.

Cricketer Tilak Varma calls on Telangana CM Revanth Reddy

Hyderabad, Sep 30 (IANS) Young cricketer Tilak Varma, the hero of India’s victory against Pakistan in the Asia Cup final, on Tuesday paid a courtesy call on Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.

The Chief Minister felicitated Tilak Verma and applauded his key role in defeating Pakistan in the final at Dubai on Sunday.

The cricketer also presented a cricket bat to the Chief Minister.

Varma received a hero’s welcome at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here on Monday night. “Overwhelmed by the love and support from Hyderabad today. Truly grateful to every Indian for standing by me. Jai Hind,” he posted on Instagram.

The 22-year-old batter played a heroic inning of 69 not out to steer India to victory when the team was struggling after losing three early wickets.

The left-hander, who smashed four sixes and three boundaries, was adjudged ‘Man of the Match’.

Varma, son of an electrician, on Tuesday visited Legal Cricket Academy at Lingampalli, where he trained. Accompanied by his childhood coach and mentor, Salam Bayash, the emerging star interacted with youngsters on the ground.

A large number of people gathered to catch a glimpse of the cricketer, who was seen holding the national flag.

Talking to media persons, the cricketer said he would always remain indebted to his childhood coach Salam. He said, like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, he always respects his coach a lot.

The young Hyderabadi said the innings he played against Pakistan on Sunday was better than his two centuries.

Talking about the final, Varma said the Pakistani team came hard at them after they lost three early wickets, but he tried to remain calm.

“We had already lost three wickets. I felt that if I come under pressure, I will not only be letting down myself but I will be letting down the entire country,” he said.

Varma said the Pakistani players said many things, but he remained calm and let the bat do the talking.

“We were playing just a sport. If we allow emotions to overcome us, we can’t play,” he said in reply to another question.

Reservation in govt jobs securing future of tea garden community, says Assam CM

Guwahati, Dec 18 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday asserted that the decision to provide three per cent reservation to the tea garden community in government jobs has secured their future.

CM Sarma argued that for the Tea Tribe community, the three per cent reservation is more than a number; it is opportunity, dignity, and a future secured through fairness.

“Today, many families celebrate dignity, opportunity, and new beginnings,” he added.

Recently, the state government has handed over at least 5,500 appointment letters to successful candidates for various government posts, in which a three per cent reservation to the tea garden community was provided. According to the Chief Minister, the decision provided a great opportunity for the people belonging to the community, and they can lead their lives in a dignified manner by serving the state government.

He mentioned that those who have secured the jobs were delighted by the initiatives of the ruling dispensation.

Notably, last month, the Assam Legislative Assembly took a historic step to address a long-standing injustice by passing the Assam Fixation of Ceiling on Land Holdings (Amendment) Bill, 2025, a move set to grant land rights to nearly three lakh tea garden workers for the first time in the state’s history.

Chief Minister Sarma said the amendment would bring dignity, stability and long-overdue security to thousands of tea garden families who have lived for generations without legal ownership of the land they inhabit.

Under the amended provisions, land pattas will be issued to workers for the plots on which they currently reside, formally recognising their right to shelter and livelihood.

To safeguard the interests of the beneficiaries and prevent distress sales or exploitation, the Chief Minister said the allotted land cannot be sold for a period of 20 years.

Even after this lock-in period, any transfer of land will be permitted only within the same community, ensuring that the benefits of the reform remain with tea garden workers.

Highlighting parallel measures for the social upliftment of the tea community, CM Sarma referred to the reservation of MBBS seats for students from the community as another landmark intervention.
