‘Gujarat Gaurav Diwas’ celebrated in Surat with parade, tableaux and cultural performances

Surat, May 1 (IANS) Surat became the focal point of state celebrations on Friday as the 66th ‘Gujarat Gaurav Diwas’ was marked with a large-scale police parade, cultural performances and public participation led by Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.

The celebrations began with Governor Acharya Devvrat taking the salute at Y Junction before formally flagging off the grand parade towards Lalbhai Contractor Stadium.

The event was attended by Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, alongside senior leaders from the state Cabinet, Parliament, Legislative Assembly and top administrative and police officials.

The parade featured more than 750 personnel from 18 platoons of the Gujarat Police, led by IPS officer Dr. Naveen Chakravarty.

It combined ceremonial drill formations with thematic tableaux highlighting Gujarat’s development journey.

Police motorcycle stunts formed part of the procession and drew attention from spectators gathered along the route.

At the start of the ceremony, the Governor took the salute before the parade commenced.

The Chief Minister and other dignitaries participated in singing “Vande Mataram”, while the atmosphere was marked by repeated slogans of “Jai Jai Garvi Gujarat” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” from the crowd. Cultural performances formed a key part of the programme, with Garba and tribal dance presentations showcasing the state’s traditional art forms.

A musical segment by singer Bhavin Shastri and his band included patriotic performances such as “Jai Jai Garvi Gujarat”, organised as part of the district administration’s evening programme.

Large crowds gathered at various points along the parade route to witness the event.

Those present included Finance Minister Kanubhai Desai, Energy Minister Rushikesh Patel, Agriculture Minister Jitu Vaghani, Forest and Environment Minister Arjun Modhwadia, Health Minister Praful Pansheriya, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Purnesh Modi, MP Mukesh Dalal, and MLAs Arvind Rana, Mohan Dodiya, Sandeep Desai, Mukesh Patel and Sangeeta Patil.

Senior officials in attendance included Chief Secretary M. K. Das, Secretary of Information and Broadcasting Dr. Vikrant Pandey, DGP Dr. K.L.N. Rao, District In-charge Secretary Shalini Agrawal, District Collector Dr. Saurabh Pardhi, Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot and Municipal Commissioner M. Nagarajan.

School jobs case: WBSSC released ‘truncated’ tainted candidates list, more names may surface, legal brains

Kolkata, Sep 2 (IANS) The list of tainted candidates released by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) in connection with the school jobs case was “truncated”, and many other names may surface in the coming days, according to legal brains.

They also feel that the list of just 1,806 tainted candidates, which had already been made public by the commission last week, had been published to “conceal rather than reveal”.

According to the former judge of the Calcutta High Court and the BJP Lok Sabha member from Tamluk constituency in East Midnapore district of West Bengal, Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who had been dealing with the different cases on the multi-crore cash-for-school job matter in West Bengal since the beginning as the-then judge of Calcutta High Court, feel that the number of tainted candidates would be no less than 6,000.

“According to him, the number of tainted candidates, as revealed by WBSSC last week, could not be as low as 1,806, since there were a total of four categories of tainted candidates getting jobs after paying money.

According to him, the first category of tainted candidates includes those who got jobs even without appearing for the written examination.

The second category of talented candidates, he said, consists of those who got jobs after submitting blank answer sheets in the written examination.

The third category, he added, includes those whose optical mark recognition (OMR) sheets were tampered with to increase their secured marks. And finally, the fourth category of tainted candidates includes those who were recruited from expired panels.

Hence, he added, if all the tainted candidates under these four categories are combined, the total number of tainted candidates will be nothing less than 6,000.

Senior advocate and CPI(M) Rajya Sabha member, Bikas Ranjan Bhattacharya, who had long been fighting several legal battles in the matter, also feels that the total of possible tainted candidates as quoted by Gangopadhyay sounded quite accurate.

“As far as my experience is concerned, because of my long association with similar cases, the total number of tainted candidates would be nothing less than 6,000, and if not more. In my opinion, the only aim of the state government and the commission is to shield as many tainted candidates as possible, and to do that, they have been adopting different tricks at different times, with the last list of just 1,806 tainted candidates,” said Bhattacharya.

After 36 days, mortal remains of Rajasthan youth to return from Saudi Arabia

Jaipur, Dec 18 (IANS) The mortal remains of 19-year-old Ramesh Kumar Meghwal, a resident of Meghwalon ki Dhani in Rajasthan’s Balotra district, who died under suspicious circumstances in Saudi Arabia, will return home on Thursday — 36 days after his death.

The body is scheduled to arrive in Jaipur from Saudi Arabia on Thursday afternoon. A hearing in the case was held at the Rajasthan High Court in Jodhpur on Wednesday, with the next hearing slated for Thursday.

Charmesh Sharma, former director of the Rajasthan Seed Corporation, who had moved a petition before the President’s Secretariat, said the mortal remains would reach Jaipur in the second half of the day. The body was flown from Saudi Arabia to New Delhi at 12.05 a.m. on December 18 and will be transported onward to Jaipur.

Lok Sabha MP Ummeda Ram Beniwal has arranged an ambulance to carry the body from Jaipur to Meghwalon ki Dhani in Balotra. Ramesh’s cousin Gajaram said that his brother Gainaram Meghwal, along with family members Motaram Meghwal, Devaram and Sukhdev, left Balotra on Wednesday evening with Sharma to receive the body at Jaipur Airport.

Ramesh had travelled to Saudi Arabia for employment on October 11 and died there on November 13, 2025, under suspicious circumstances. As the body was not repatriated to India, his mother, Tiju Devi, filed a petition in the Rajasthan High Court on December 10.

Taking note of the matter, Justice Nupur Bhati on December 11 issued a notice to the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in New Delhi and sought responses from the Governments of India and Rajasthan.

Following the High Court’s intervention, Saudi authorities handed over the body to the Indian Embassy, after which a No Objection Certificate (NOC) was issued, clearing the way for its repatriation.

‘Rajasthan govt plans to grant Rs 10 lakh compensation to kin of those dying in human-wildlife conflict’

Jaipur, Feb 3 (IANS) The Rajasthan government led by Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma will provide Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the families of people who lose their lives in human–wildlife conflict, Minister of State for Forests and Environment (Independent Charge), Sanjay Sharma, informed the Assembly on Tuesday.

He also assured that residents of villages falling under the Karauli Tiger Reserve Sanctuary will not be displaced against their will.

Responding during Question Hour, Sharma said that under a 2022 government order, the compensation amount in cases of death due to wildlife attacks currently stands at Rs 5 lakh. However, showing sensitivity to such incidents, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has approved increasing the assistance to Rs 10 lakh.

Necessary amendments to the rules are underway, after which the enhanced compensation will come into effect.

Replying to supplementary questions raised by MLA Jaswant Singh Gurjar, the minister clarified that if villagers are cultivating barren land within the reserve area, there is no provision for compensation under existing departmental rules.

Sharma further explained that a committee was constituted for identifying the Critical Tiger Habitat (CTH) in the Dholpur–Karauli region in compliance with Supreme Court directions.

The committee’s report was submitted to the apex court, and only thereafter was the CTH officially notified.

Providing an update on wildlife incidents, the minister informed the House that a tigress recently died in the Sariska Tiger Reserve, Alwar, after sustaining injuries in a fight with another tigress. A post-mortem examination was conducted as per protocol, and the animal was cremated with due respect.

Earlier, in a written reply to the original question, Sharma stated that the process of voluntary relocation of villages from the Critical Tiger Habitat in Dholpur–Karauli has not yet begun.

He reiterated that if voluntary displacement takes place in the future within the Karauli Tiger Reserve — covering areas of the Bari Assembly constituency — compensation will be provided strictly as per state government guidelines and norms issued by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) on November 2, 2002; February 21, 2008; and July 24, 2025.
