Lucknow: Torrential rains have wreaked havoc across Uttar Pradesh, leaving at least 15 people dead and damaging more than 100 houses, officials said. Several districts have reported incidents of wall collapses and lightning strikes amid the intense rainfall.
As many as 63 of the state’s 75 districts have recorded rainfall above normal levels. Lucknow witnessed 125.8 mm of rain in a single day, resulting in widespread waterlogging and disruption of traffic in several parts of the city. Heavy showers have also affected Kanpur and other districts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the intense rainfall to a deep depression over northeastern Madhya Pradesh and adjoining northern Chhattisgarh.
The weather system is expected to continue influencing conditions in Uttar Pradesh, with the IMD forecasting heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in central parts of the state and the Terai foothills on Sunday.
With the situation worsening in several districts, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to intensify relief and rescue operations. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed in vulnerable areas.
Authorities are evacuating people from affected locations and shifting them to safer places, while district administrations have been instructed to closely monitor the situation and respond to emergencies.
