India and Vietnam work on strengthening air connectivity

Hanoi, Sep 18 (IANS) A delegation from the Ministry of Civil Aviation visited Vietnam and held discussions with the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) on the India–Vietnam Air Services Agreement, the Embassy of India, Hanoi, said on Friday.

“India and Viet Nam take forward air connectivity. Boost to people-to-people linkages. A delegation from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India, visited Viet Nam from 17–18 September 2026 and held discussions with the Civil Aviation Authority of Viet Nam (CAAV) on the India–Viet Nam Air Services Agreement,” the Embassy stated on X.

It said that enhanced air connectivity will provide fresh momentum to trade, investment, tourism and people-to-people exchanges and noted that connectivity is an important pillar of the India–Vietnam Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Earlier this week, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar and his Vietnamese counterpart Le Hoai Trung discussed strengthening political, defence and security cooperation, including increasing the supply of Made-in-India defence articles.

The talks to strengthen bilateral cooperation across key areas took place as both ministers co-chaired the 19th India-Vietnam Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) in New Delhi on Monday.

Describing the meeting as “productive and outcome-oriented”, EAM said that the talks focused on strengthening political, defence and security cooperation, increasing the supply of Made-in-India defence articles, and advancing cooperation in trade, investment, supply chains, energy, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and cultural projects.

“Strengthened India-Vietnam political, defence and security cooperation. Increased supply of Made-in-India defence articles. Enabled a constructive discussion on trade, investment and supply chains. Expanded market access of our marine, agricultural products and pharmaceuticals. Discussed deepening energy cooperation. Promoted heritage conservation and cultural projects,” EAM Jaishankar posted on X following the meeting.

“Vietnam is a key partner of our Look East, ASEAN, Indo-Pacific, MAHASAGAR and Global South policies,” he added.

In his opening remarks at the meeting, EAM Jaishankar described Vietnam as a significant partner in advancing India’s regional engagement, particularly under the Act East policy, the MAHASAGAR vision and wider Indo-Pacific vision.

He also stressed the importance of Vietnam under the framework of India’s Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with ASEAN.

Bengal teachers’ recruitment case: Calcutta HC raises questions on investigation progress

Kolkata, Sep 2 (IANS) The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday raised questions about the progress of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the primary teachers’ recruitment corruption case in state-run schools, and asked the CBI when its probe into the case will be completed.

While hearing the case, a division bench of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Ritabrata Kumar Mitra observed that none of them knows when the investigation into the corruption in the recruitment of primary teachers will be completed.

The high court also said that until the investigation is completed, it is not possible to know who got the job through corruption and who is involved in that corruption.

The High Court has been hearing the case of the cancellation of 32,000 teaching jobs in state-run primary schools. Earlier, arguments were made on behalf of the state government and the West Bengal Primary Education Board.

Lawyer for the petitioners, Soumya Majumdar, argued before the court that the primary board did not publish the merit list correctly. A lot of complications were created in publishing the merit list; therefore, if there is any error, it cannot be easily detected.

Justice Chakraborty countered him by saying what procedure should have been followed for publishing the merit list. Was it supposed to be published according to any specific rule? asked the court. The lawyer said that there is no rule for this. However, in such jobs, a district-wise transparent list of trained, untrained, caste, subject and number-based lists should have been published.

The court observed that the cancellation of the jobs of so many teachers will have an impact on their families. They have already served for five years. The case has been going on for almost two years. The court wanted to know what could be an alternative to this and posted the matter for hearing next on September 11.

J&K L-G announces houses, family health insurance & other facilities for those affected during Op Sindoor and floods

Jammu, Dec 8 (IANS) Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor (L-G), Manoj Sinha, said on Monday that all those who suffered in Operation Sindoor as well as floods will get new houses with family health insurance cover and other facilities.

The L-G said that a new chapter will start in the lives of those who have suffered due border shelling in Operation Sindoor and floods.

“I am thankful to HRDS India which agreed to construct houses for such affected families. I approached the heads of HRDS India with a request for construction of new houses for such families. They agreed to do so.”

“A MoU was signed with HRDS India for constructing 1,500 houses for such families. Ten lakh rupees will be spent on construction of one house and in total 35 crore will be spent by HRDS India on the houses which will be equipped with all modern facilities,” L-G Sinha added.

“All houses will be having modern design and will be constructed with quality material. All these houses will be constructed in next six months,” the L-G said, adding that all people of these families will be covered with health insurance.

He said that the local administration has also provided a helping hand to all such people.

It was a tough time for people as huge damage took place to infrastructure due to floods and in border shelling during Operation Sindoor, he added.

“I pay tribute to those who lost life in both these situations. An effort has been started to heal wounds of the sufferers. The administration took all steps to rehabilitate the affected families and all agencies worked hard and managed to save the lives of many,” he said.

The L-G added that the Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Jammu and assured all kinds of support for victims.

“We have sent a detailed report to the Union government and I hope that soon a package for flood victims will be released.”

“The administration came forward and helped such families. We have provided jobs and compensation for families affected due to Pakistani shelling,” he asserted.

He said there has been a huge change in Jammu and Kashmir during the last many years and credit goes to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who took several steps for overall development of the Union Territory.

The L-G said the PM Awas Yojana and other such schemes have brought huge benefits for the people living in rural areas.

He also mentioned the widening of Jammu-Akhnoor project and restoration of Mubarak Mandi complex, smart city projects, etc., undergoing with fast pace in Jammu.

UAE, US Presidents hold talks in Abu Dhabi to boost partnership

Abu Dhabi, May 16 (IANS) President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan held talks with visiting US President Donald Trump at the Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi, reaffirming the commitment of both countries to deepening their strategic partnership, media reported.

The two leaders on Thursday discussed ways to strengthen cooperation across a range of sectors, including investment, energy, advanced technology, artificial intelligence, and industry, according to UAE’s state news agency WAM.

Sheikh Mohamed highlighted the depth of UAE-US relations, which he said span over five decades, Xinhua news agency reported.

He reaffirmed the UAE’s dedication to global peace, stability, and prosperity through multilateral cooperation and close coordination with international partners, especially the US.

The two sides also exchanged views on regional and international developments of mutual concern, with particular attention to maintaining security and de-escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Trump praised Sheikh Mohamed’s leadership and noted that bilateral relations have continued to grow stronger under his guidance.

Also on Thursday, the two Presidents jointly unveiled an artificial intelligence campus in Abu Dhabi, the largest AI campus outside the US.

Sheikh Mohamed underscored the UAE’s commitment to deepening cooperation with the US in light of their longstanding efforts to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Middle East and around the world. This, he noted, is in line with the UAE’s unwavering support for global stability, peace, and development through multilateral international cooperation.

During the meeting, both leaders affirmed their joint aim to further enhance the UAE-US strategic partnership.

Sheikh Mohamed also emphasised that over the years, the UAE has remained a reliable partner of the US in addressing common challenges.

The UAE, President Sheikh Mohamed said, is determined to continue strengthening this friendship for the benefit of both nations and their peoples while working together in support of peace and stability regionally and globally.

Sheikh Mohamed pointed to the future-focused partnership between the UAE and US that has been further strengthened by President Trump’s support, particularly in the fields of the new economy, advanced technology, and artificial intelligence.

For his part, the US President praised the leadership of Sheikh Mohamed, affirming that relations between the UAE and US have reached new heights and continue to grow stronger.

To mark the state visit, Sheikh Mohamed hosted a dinner banquet in honour of President Trump and his accompanying delegation.

President Trump also signed the guestbook at Qasr Al Watan, expressing his pleasure at visiting the UAE and meeting with Sheikh Mohamed. He affirmed the enduring and strategic nature of US-UAE relations and the continued efforts of both nations to reinforce these ties in support of shared development, wishing the UAE and its people continued progress and prosperity.
