India delivers medical supplies in Afghanistan, reaffirms humanitarian support

New Delhi/Kabul, Sep 27 (IANS) India on Sunday delivered another consignment of life-saving medicines and medical consumables in Kabul as part of its ongoing humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan.

“India’s humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan continues. Another consignment from India has reached Kabul, including life-saving medicines and medical consumables for government hospital in the city. Health remains at the heart of India’s humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people”, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a post on X.

This comes amid India’s sustained efforts to provide humanitarian support to Afghanistan, including the supply of essential medicines, relief materials, and other aid.

On August 20, India delivered medicines and medical consumables to a government hospital in Kabul and reaffirmed its health partnership with the people of Afghanistan.

“Augmenting Afghanistan’s healthcare! Reaffirming its enduring health partnership with the friendly people of Afghanistan, India delivers medicines and medical consumables to a Government Hospital in Kabul,” the MEA posted on X.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had stated that India and Afghanistan share a “very longstanding relationship” and the engagement between the two nations has gained momentum over the past year.

Addressing a biweekly media briefing in New Delhi on August 18, Jaiswal recalled the recent diplomatic steps, including the elevation of India’s technical mission in Kabul to an embassy.

Asked about the presence of the Joint Secretary (Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran) division at Afghanistan’s “Victory Day” event hosted at the embassy in New Delhi, he said: “Afghanistan held their Victory Day event here yesterday, which, as you mentioned, was attended on behalf of the Government of India by our Joint Secretary who handles Afghanistan affairs. India and Afghanistan share a long-standing relationship with the Afghan people. Our engagement with Afghanistan has gained momentum over the last one year or so, including through diplomatic exchanges, humanitarian assistance that we have offered, as also our development cooperation programs.”

“The nature and level of engagement with Afghanistan will continue to be guided by these priorities that I just outlined. In October of 2025, we had elevated the status of our technical mission in Kabul to that of an Embassy. And as a result, the head of our technical mission was designated as Charge d’Affaires, or his position was elevated. We shall keep you updated if there is any further progress on this account,” he added.

In July, India delivered relief material, including food items and family tents, to Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority to support affected communities amid devastating floods in Nuristan.

“In the wake of the devastating floods in Nuristan, India delivers relief materials, including food items and family tents, to Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority to support affected communities. India stands with the Afghan people at this difficult time,” the MEA wrote on X.

In June, India sent another five tonnes of essential medicines to Kabul, reflecting its long-standing commitment to the welfare and well-being of the Afghan people.

Taking to X, the MEA said, “India delivers another 5 tonnes of essential medicines to Kabul, reaffirming its enduring commitment to humanitarian assistance and the well-being of the Afghan people.”

CEC Rajiv Kumar eyeing post-retirement job: Kejriwal on Yamuna row

New Delhi, Jan 30 (IANS) AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday criticised the Election Commission’s decision to dismiss his Yamuna ‘poison’ plea for lack of evidence, claiming that CEC Rajiv Kumar is favouring the BJP as he is looking for a post-retirement job.

Addressing a media conference, the former Delhi Chief Minister raised doubts over the rejection of his plea by the ECI, indirectly blaming the poll panel for favouring rivals, the BJP and the Congress.

CEC Rajiv Kumar is scheduled to retire on February 28 after a three-year stint in the election body.

“The ECI is indulging in politics and ignoring the glaring violation of the model election code. It can’t see the distribution of bedsheets and money taking place. We have complained about the violations, but CEC Rajiv Kumar is not acting as he is looking for a post-retirement job,” he said.

“I want to tell Rajiv Kumar ji that history will never forgive him for the damage he has caused to an institution like the Election Commission,” Kejriwal said.

His outburst against the CEC came within hours of the poll panel expressing dissatisfaction over Kejriwal’s reply on the Yamuna ‘poison’ issue, saying that “no factual, legal matrix with evidence has been provided to support his statement”.

Speaking to media persons, Kejriwal admitted that the level of ammonia in the river water has now come down to 3 ppm from 7 ppm till a few days back, but alleged politics was being done over the issue over the past few weeks under which the ammonia level was raised by Haryana.

He said he is sending four bottles of the “contaminated water” to BJP and Congress leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah, Delhi unit chief Virendra Sachdeva, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini (all BJP) and Rahul Gandhi.

“These water bottles have chlorinated water from the river which had high levels of ammonia and is unsafe. I challenge the leaders from other parties to drink this,” he said, calling CM Saini’s recent visit to the Yamuna bank in Delhi and drinking its water a “gimmick”.

He said the water flowing into Delhi from Haryana had high levels of ammonia – up to 7 ppm – which could have caused irreversible damage to organs if it had been used in the DJB treatment plant.

“Letting raw water with 8 ppm ammonia get chlorinated at Delhi Jal Board treatment plants would have converted it into poison,” he said, adding that the four bottles containing samples of this type of water with high ammonia with chlorine are being sent to BJP and Congress leaders.

The AAP national Convenor said Chief Minister Atishi had called her Haryana counterpart Saini several times over the past few weeks to request him to check the high ammonia level in Yamuna water but he made hollow promises and later refused to take her calls.

Refusing to be cowed down by threats of rival leaders to file cases against him or put him in jail over the Yamuna ‘poison’ issue, Kejriwal said: “I will not let poisoned water flow into Delhi taps. I am not afraid of going to jail.”

Safe drinking water and cleaning of Yamuna are key issues on which the ruling AAP is facing heat from rivals BJP and Congress ahead of the February 5 Assembly election, whose result will be declared on February 8.

Kejriwal’s Yamuna ‘poison’ claims appear to be an attempt to shift the blame for Delhi’s water woes to Haryana and rival BJP which, in turn, has blamed the AAP for its failure to deliver on its promises of clean Yamuna and 24X7 safe water supply in the city.

Villages must emerge as economic hubs to realise ‘Viksit Bharat@2047’: Gujarat Minister

Gandhinagar, Jan 23 (IANS) Emphasising that the transformation of villages is central to India’s long-term growth, Gujarat’s Rural Development Minister Kunvarji Bavaliya said on Friday that the vision of “Viksit Bharat@2047” can be realised only when villages evolve into vibrant economic hubs.

He was speaking while chairing a high-level review meeting in Gandhinagar to assess the implementation of key rural development schemes across the state.

The meeting focused on a comprehensive review of works undertaken under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY-G), Swachh Bharat Mission–Gramin (SBM-G), and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

The Minister took detailed updates on physical and financial progress, quality of execution, and timelines of projects being implemented at the village level.

Highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Viksit Bharat@2047 vision, Minister Bavaliya said villages must be developed on the lines of cities by ensuring modern infrastructure, basic amenities, and improved quality of life.

He underlined the need for an “innovation in lifestyle” approach to make rural areas self-reliant, productive, and economically dynamic.

The Minister stressed that all villages should be equipped with urban-like facilities and that rural development works must be executed with speed, quality, and durability.

He directed officials to ensure that even the most remote citizens are not left out of the development process and that all government-set physical and financial targets are achieved within stipulated timelines through proper planning and coordination.

Senior officials, including Rural Development Department Additional Chief Secretary Dhananjay Dwivedi, Additional Commissioner of Panchayat, Rural Housing and Rural Development B.M. Prajapati, and district-level officers from across the state, were present at the review meeting.

Villages in Gujarat represent a diverse and dynamic rural landscape, spread across arid regions like Kutch, fertile belts of north and central Gujarat, coastal villages along Saurashtra, and the tribal-dominated eastern districts.

These villages form the backbone of the state’s economy through agriculture, dairy farming, fisheries, handicrafts, salt production, and small-scale rural industries, supported strongly by cooperative movements and self-help groups.

While many villages still face challenges such as water scarcity, migration, and limited non-farm employment, Gujarat’s rural areas have witnessed steady transformation through improved road connectivity, electrification, drinking water supply, sanitation coverage, digital services, and rural housing schemes.

Increasing focus on skill development, women-led enterprises, renewable energy, and village-level infrastructure is gradually turning Gujarat’s villages into centres of local economic activity, social empowerment, and sustainable development, aligning rural growth with the state’s broader development vision.

Adverse weather: Schools in Jammu division to remain shut on Sep 2

Jammu, Sep 1 (IANS) All schools in the Jammu division of J&K will remain shut on September 2 in the wake of the adverse weather advisory on Monday, authorities said.

An order issued by the Director, School Education Department, Jammu, said that in view of the weather alerts and incessant rain causing landslides in hilly areas, and to ensure the safety of students and staff, it is ordered that all government and private schools across the Jammu division will continue to remain closed on September 2.

“It is ordered that online classes be conducted wherever possible,” the Department said.

The MET Department has forecast generally cloudy weather on September 2 and 3 with one or two spells of light to moderate rain/thunder at many places with a possibility of heavy to very rains over Kathua, Jammu, Udhampur and Reasi and moderate to very heavy rainfall in Doda, Ramban, Rajouri, Poonch, Kishtwar, Samba, Anantnag and Kulgam.

“There is a possibility of cloudburst/landslide/mudslide/ shooting stones, and vulnerable places. People are advised to stay away from water bodies/nallahs/river embankments and loose structures, etc,” the advisory said.

Meanwhile, after clearing many stranded vehicles today, the Jammu-Srinagar highway was again closed for traffic.

The continued blockade of the highway has hit the essential supplies in the Valley, and prices of poultry, etc, have skyrocketed during the last few days.

Since August 14, when a cloudburst in Chashoti village of Kishtwar district killed 67 people, most of them Machail Mata Yatra pilgrims, incessant rainfall has triggered unprecedented floods in Jammu division, causing huge damage to bridges, roads, government and private buildings.

On August 26, a landslide on the route to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine killed 36 pilgrims, even when the Yatra had been suspended.

While most of the pilgrims had come down to the base camp, Katra, many of them had taken shelter in a designated shelter space, which was hit by the landslide.

This portion of the Yatra route had never been affected by a landslide in the past.
