Jammu and Kashmir: One killed, 17 injured in two road accidents

Jammu, Aug 18 (IANS) A teenager was killed and 17 others injured on Tuesday, in two separate road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir.

According to officials, a teenage boy was killed and 12 people were injured after multiple vehicles collided with each other in a road accident in Rajouri district.

The accident occurred at Tandwal near Rajouri town along the Jammu-Poonch National Highway when a two-wheeler first collided with a taxi and an auto-rickshaw. The three-wheeler subsequently rammed into five parked cars.

Thirteen people, including three boys on the two-wheeler, were injured in the collision.

They were rushed to Government Medical College (GMC) hospital Rajouri. Officials said one of the injured boys, Manish Kumar, 18, succumbed to his injuries there.

Police said the condition of two of the injured is critical. Police has seized all the vehicles involved in the accident.

Officials said a case under relevant sections of law has been registered at the local police station for further investigation.

Meanwhile, five CRPF personnel were injured in another road accident in Qazigund area of Kulgam district. Police said the CRPF vehicle collided with a truck near Levdura area of Qazigund on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway today morning.

The injured have been identified as Inspector, Raj Kumar Tiwari, Sub-inspector, Rajinder Singh,assistant sub-inspector, Lovenday, assistant sub-inspector, Umesh Kumar and head constable, Driver Virender.

All the injured have been shifted to hospital and officials said doctors are monitoring their condition.

Hilly roads of Rajouri, Poonch, Reasi, Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban and Udhampur in Jammu division are notorious for Farsi road accidents. Experts attribute these road accidents to had road conditions, over-speeding, over-loading and road rage.

Traffic department has deputed special checking squads to check road accidents in these vulnerable districts.

Cancellation of driving licences and registration certificates are some of the punishments given for rash and negligent driving in J&K.

Fake call centre busted in Gurugram, 11 arrested

Gurugram, Jan 9 (IANS) Eleven people, including four women, were arrested for defrauding people on the pretext of selling “herbal medicines” for sexual health issues in Gurugram.

Two laptops and four mobile phones used in various crimes were seized from their possession, police said on Thursday.

Priyanshu Diwan, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Cyber Crime, Gurugram district, said the call centre was busted in Dundahera village on January 6.

Diwan said they raided the centre and arrested 11 persons, identified as Amandeep, Ranjit Kumar, Mohamad Kasim, Pratush Kumar Mishra, Sushil Kumar, Brijesh Sharma, Anoop Kumar, Rashika Rana, Isha, Sonali Kannojia and Megha.

The police team registered a criminal case under Sections 318, 319, and 612 of the BNS and 66D IT Act at the police station Cyber Crime (West), Gurugram, and began investigations.

During the interrogation of the accused, it was found that Amandeep and Ranjit were the operators of the call centre and had employed the remaining accused.

“The accused disclosed that they had created a facebook page named ‘The-Vedic Ayurvedic’ on behalf of Dr Rajiv Dixit and used to put advertisements in the name of selling herbal medicines for better sexual health. When people contacted the numbers given in the advertisements, they used to take orders from them, get the money deposited in different bank accounts and deliver fake medicines.

Apart from this, they used to commit fraud by making those people deposit money through a QR code/UPI ID.

The fraudsters also disclosed that they were committing the above-mentioned frauds for about a period of nine to 10 months.

To commit fraud, they used to get a salary of Rs 18,000 to 20,000 per month and an incentive for additional sales.

Further investigations are underway to identify the accused of this cyber fraud who employed the arrested youths to cheat people.

Stalin inaugurates Rs 9,000-crore Tata-JLR plant in Tamil Nadu’s Ranipet

Chennai, Feb 9 (IANS) Reaffirming confidence in Tamil Nadu’s ‘Dravidian model of governance’ as a magnet for global investments, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday inaugurated the Rs 9,000-crore Tata Motors-Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) passenger car manufacturing plant at Panapakkam village in Ranipet district, marking a major milestone in the State’s expanding automotive sector.

Describing the project as a symbol of Tamil Nadu’s industrial strength, Stalin said the State has consistently emerged as a preferred destination for world-class manufacturing due to its skilled workforce, progressive policies and robust infrastructure.

He noted that the Tata Group has played a significant role in India’s nation-building efforts and shares a long-standing, historic partnership with Tamil Nadu.

“The commencement of operations at this advanced facility strengthens our position as India’s automobile capital and reinforces investor confidence in the Dravidian model,” he said after flagging off the first Range Rover Evoque rolled out from the new plant.

Spread across 470 acres, the state-of-the-art facility integrates advanced manufacturing technologies with a highly trained workforce to produce premium passenger vehicles for both domestic and international markets. Production will be scaled up in phases over the next five to seven years, eventually reaching the plant’s full annual capacity of 2.5 lakh vehicles.

In his special address, Chairman of Tata Sons and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd, N. Chandrasekaran, termed the inauguration a “significant milestone” in the company’s journey towards sustainable and future-ready manufacturing. He said the project deepens Tata’s partnership with Tamil Nadu, a State known for industrial excellence, innovation and inclusive growth.

The new plant is expected to generate more than 5,000 direct and indirect jobs while creating opportunities for local suppliers and strengthening the ancillary ecosystem.

Officials said the project would also promote skill development and enhance regional economic growth. Before the launch, Stalin toured the facility along with Chandrasekaran.

Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa, Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru, Handlooms and Textiles Minister R. Gandhi, and Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam accompanied him.

With the Tata-JLR plant now operational, Tamil Nadu has added another marquee investment to its industrial portfolio, reinforcing its status as one of India’s leading automotive manufacturing hubs.

Alka Lamba slams Odisha govt, appeals to support bandh call on July 17

Bhubaneswar, July 16 (IANS) President of All India Mahila Congress Alka Lamba on Wednesday launched a blistering attack on the Odisha government over the death of a girl student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi calling him ‘inexperienced’ who failed to stop atrocities on women in the state.

She also appealed to the people of Odisha to come out of their houses and support the ‘Odisha bandh’ or the statewide general strike call given by the Congress and other parties on July 17.

Addressing a press conference in Bhubaneswar, Lamba alleged that Odisha has become increasingly unsafe for women under the BJP-led government.

“The state machinery has failed miserably. A girl had to set herself on fire to demand justice. If this doesn’t shake the conscience of the Chief Minister, what will?” she asked.

Lamba held the state government responsible for the student’s death and termed it a result of administrative failure and lack of accountability.

“When law and order collapse, when criminals roam freely and victims die waiting for justice, then it’s time for the Chief Minister to go. We demand his immediate resignation and appeal to the Centre to impose President’s Rule in Odisha,” she said.

She also condemned the delay in medical treatment and the absence of prompt action from the administration.

“Timely treatment could have saved her. The system remained mute while a young girl was burning – literally and metaphorically,” she said.

Highlighting Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi’s recent conversation with the victim student’s father, Lamba said, “LoP Rahul Gandhi spoke to the victim’s grieving father not just as a political leader but with the sensitivity of a son. He promised the family that Congress would stand with them until justice is served.”

She also attacked Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for targeting LoP Rahul Gandhi for raising his voice on the issue.

Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the union government of keeping mum on the issue, she questioned, “When such brutality happens in Odisha, why is the central government silent? Why no action? Is a girl’s life worth less than a political equation?”

Alka Lamba also announced that the Congress will observe a statewide Odisha bandh on July 17 to protest against the state government’s inaction and to press for the resignation of the Chief Minister.

He also stated that the party will demand for imposition of President’s Rule in Odisha during the upcoming Lok Seva session.

“Our protest will be peaceful, democratic, and in the spirit of justice. We appeal to the people of Odisha to support this bandh and raise their voice for the safety of daughters,” she said.

Lamba concluded by stating that the Congress will intensify its agitation if action is not taken immediately.

“This is not the end. The Congress, along with the people of Odisha, will fight until every daughter in the state feels safe and justice is delivered,” she said.
