Wayanad, Oct 14 (IANS) Kerala Chief Minister, V.D. Satheesan, on Wednesday condoled the death of Padma Shri awardee Cheruvayal Raman, describing the Wayanad tribal farmer as a guardian of Kerala’s agricultural heritage who dedicated his life to preserving traditional paddy varieties for future generations.
The 74-year-old Raman, who died while undergoing treatment at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, was widely known for conserving more than 50 traditional rice varieties that were facing the threat of extinction.
His work inspired farmers across Kerala and helped preserve the state’s rich agricultural traditions.
“By making traditional paddy varieties that might otherwise have disappeared an integral part of his life and preserving them for future generations, Cheruvayal Raman became a true guardian of Kerala’s agricultural heritage,” Chief Minister Satheesan said in his condolence message.
The Chief Minister said Raman had demonstrated through his life that farming was not merely a means of livelihood but also a responsibility towards the soil and nature.
His efforts to pass on the knowledge of traditional seeds, farming practices and the value of the land to younger generations would be remembered for years, he added.
Raman received the Padma Shri in 2023 in recognition of his contribution to the conservation of indigenous rice varieties and traditional farming practices.
Despite having only a primary school education, he became a respected authority on traditional paddy cultivation through decades of practical experience.
He cultivated rare rice varieties on his land and carefully preserved their seeds, ensuring that they remained available for future generations.
His work also attracted researchers, agricultural experts and visitors from different parts of the world.
Chief Minister Satheesan said it was a matter of great happiness and pride that the UDF government could present Raman with the first Oommen Chandy Memorial Agricultural Award, announced on Chingam after the government assumed office.
The Chief Minister described Raman’s death as an irreparable loss to Kerala’s agricultural sector and heritage conservation.
“Every seed he safeguarded carries hope for future generations. Keeping that hope alive in the soil is the greatest tribute we can pay to him,” Chief Minister Satheesan said, paying homage to the departed farmer.
