LS Speaker Birla, Uzbekistan FM Saidov discuss ways to deepen parliamentary cooperation

New Delhi, Aug 4 (IANS) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla held a meeting with the visiting Uzbekistan Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov in New Delhi on Tuesday, discussing ways to deepen inter-parliamentary dialogue, enhance the activities of friendship groups, and promote the exchange of experience in the field of lawmaking.

During the meeting, Om Birla recalled his visit to Uzbekistan last year and expressed appreciation for the warm hospitality extended to him during the 150th Anniversary Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

“Had a warm and substantive meeting with H.E. Om Birla, Speaker of the Lok Sabha of the Parliament of the Republic of India. Emphasised the important role of parliamentary diplomacy in further strengthening the strategic partnership between Uzbekistan and India. We discussed ways to deepen inter-parliamentary dialogue, enhance the activities of friendship groups, and promote the exchange of experience in the field of lawmaking,” Saidov posted on X.

“Om Birla warmly recalled his visit to Uzbekistan last year and once again expressed his sincere appreciation for the warm reception and traditional hospitality extended during the 150th Anniversary Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union,” he added.

Birla stated that he and Bakhtiyor Saidov held discussions on further strengthening ties between India and Uzbekistan, with a special focus on enhancing parliamentary cooperation, trade, investment, connectivity, education, culture and people-to-people exchanges

“It was a pleasure to meet H.E. Mr. Bakhtiyor Saidov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan, at Parliament House today. We had a productive discussion on further strengthening the longstanding friendship between India and Uzbekistan, with a special focus on enhancing Parliamentary Cooperation, Trade, Investment, Connectivity, Education, Culture and People-to-People Exchanges,” he wrote on X.

“I recalled my visit to Tashkent for the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in April 2025, where I had the privilege of meeting H.E. Mr. Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Senate Chairperson H.E. Tanzila Narbayeva and Legislative Chamber Speaker H.E. Nuriddin Ismoilov. Those interactions further reinforced our shared commitment to deepening bilateral and parliamentary engagement,” he added.

During the meeting, Birla spoke about the formation of the India-Uzbekistan Parliamentary Friendship Group by the Parliament of India in March, which includes members from the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. He stated that the Group will serve ​as an important platform to advance cooperation between the two nations in the fields of economic development, education, culture and humanitarian Initiatives.

Bakhtiyor Saidov arrived in New Delhi on Monday for an official visit to India. During his visit, he met External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar, called on President Droupadi Murmu and participated in the Uzbekistan-India Business Forum.

Rainfall boosts kuruvai paddy cultivation in TN delta districts, farmers eye samba crop

Chennai, Aug 17 (IANS) Barring a few areas where early kuruvai paddy is ready for harvest, the widespread rainfall over the past two weeks has provided a significant boost to kuruvai cultivation across the Cauvery delta districts.

Farmers say the showers have also created favourable conditions for the upcoming samba season.

According to the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department, short-term kuruvai paddy has been cultivated on 2.33 lakh hectares this year in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Tiruchy. This marks a 56 per cent increase compared to last year.

Comfortable storage levels in the Mettur dam, combined with the recent rainfall, have given a strong lifeline to standing kuruvai crops.

Farmers note that the rainfall during the traditional Tamil month of Aadi has been timely. “This will help ensure a bumper harvest during the current kuruvai season,” said Kumaran Balaji, a farmer from Thanjavore.

Another farmer, R. Sukumaran of Kakkarai, termed the rains “necessary” for sustaining the crop. However, for those harvesting early varieties, the excess moisture has created challenges.

“Due to the wet fields, machines had to be operated for three extra hours to complete the harvest, which increased expenses,” said P. Vadivelu of Ammayagaram.

Meanwhile, several farmers who opted out of kuruvai cultivation in favour of samba are making use of both rainwater and canal water for transplantation.

Official estimates project that samba paddy will cover 1.23 lakh hectares in Thanjavur, 1.38 lakh hectares in Tiruvarur, and 70,000 hectares in Mayiladuthurai.

Experts have advised farmers to adopt careful sowing practices to protect the samba crop from damage during the northeast monsoon.

“Long-term varieties should be sown between August 15 and September 7, while medium-term varieties can be sown throughout September. This timing will help safeguard crops from heavy rainfall later in the year,” said P. Kalaivanan of the Senior Agro Technologists Forum.

With steady rainfall, ample dam storage, and timely guidance, farmers in the delta are optimistic about both kuruvai and samba yields this year, though rising operational costs remain a concern.

26 Myanmarese nationals deported from Manipur

Imphal, Jan 5 (IANS) Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Sunday said that 26 Myanmarese nationals, who had earlier entered India through the state’s border, were deported to their country.

Biren Singh, who also holds the Home portfolio, in a post on X said: “A group of 26 Myanmarese nationals who entered India through Manipur’s porous border were deported to their home country today.

“The government of Manipur reaffirms its commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to those fleeing war, ensuring their care and dignified departure. However, the state maintains a firm stance against allowing illegal migrants to stay back in Manipur.”

A senior Manipur Home Department official said that the Myanmarese were handed over to the authorities of the neighbouring country by Manipur police and the central forces deployed along the bordering Moreh town.

Since March 8 last year, 141 Myanmarese nationals, including women and children, in four different phases have been deported to their country.

In coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and central security forces, last year deported 115 Myanmarese nationals, including women and children, in three phases.

After the military junta seized power in Myanmar on February 1, 2021, around 35,000 people, including women, elderly people and children, from the neighbouring country took shelter in 11 districts of Mizoram.

The Myanmarese are staying in more than a hundred relief camps in six districts while several thousand others live in relatives or friends’ houses as well as in rented accommodation, a Mizoram Home Department official said.

Over 6,000 Myanmarese nationals took shelter in Manipur’s different bordering districts. Mizoram and Manipur have 518 km and 400 km of unfenced borders, respectively, with Myanmar.

The MHA earlier in 2022 asked both the Manipur and Mizoram governments to undertake the recording of biometric and biographic data of all the Myanmar refugees.
