MP: BJP’s first State Working Committee meeting set for Orchha on Aug 30

Bhopal, Aug 24 (IANS) The Madhya Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will hold its first State Working Committee meeting under State President Hemant Khandelwal in Orchha on August 30 and 31.

The two‑day conclave will focus on preparations for the 2028 Assembly elections, plans to strengthen the organisation, and strategies to connect with youth, particularly Gen‑Z and Gen‑Alpha. Approximately 350 to 400 leaders are expected to attend, including Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, both Deputy Chief Ministers, Union Ministers from the state, state government ministers, MPs, MLAs and state party office‑bearers.

The meeting will take place at two hotels, with senior leaders scheduled to arrive from August 29 to finalise arrangements. A core group or “toli baithak” will be held on August 25 to finalise preparations and the agenda. Senior office‑bearers, including State Vice‑President Shailendra Barua and others, recently reviewed arrangements in Orchha.

The programme is set to begin with flag‑hoisting, followed by a visit to a major exhibition showcasing welfare schemes and key achievements of the Central and state governments. Cultural programmes will also be organised for delegates in the evenings. Around 400 rooms have been booked across hotels to accommodate participants, with dedicated transport arrangements from Orchha railway station.

The Working Committee will specifically deliberate on expanding the party’s outreach among youth, including Gen‑Z and Gen‑Alpha members. Officials indicated that programmes may be outlined to broaden the party’s base among younger generations and explore innovative ways of communicating with them.

Discussions will also cover cooperatives, municipal elections and other political issues. The government’s performance and the organisation’s activities will be reviewed.

This will be the first formal meeting of the newly constituted State Working Committee, which comprises 106 regular members and 41 special invitees, supplemented by ex‑officio members such as MPs and MLAs. The gathering is seen as a key organisational exercise to set the agenda for the coming years and gear up for Mission 2028. Party sources described the Orchha meet as an important platform to align organisational efforts with electoral goals under Khandelwal’s stewardship.

Asian Weightlifting Championships: Gyaneshwari Yadav wins silver, bronze in 53kg category

Gandhinagar, May 13 (IANS) India’s narrow podium finish in the women’s 53kg category set the tone on the third day of the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2026 in Gandhinagar, where Gyaneshwari Yadav secured a silver medal in the snatch and a bronze in the overall total, missing out on a higher finish by just one kilogram.

The championships, being held at the Mahatma Mandir and Exhibition Centre since May 11, have brought together 178 elite athletes from 28 Asian nations and two Commonwealth countries.

The event also carries significance as a qualification pathway for the Commonwealth Games 2026, adding competitive weight to each category.

In a closely contested women’s 53kg event, Jinlan Zhao of China dominated with a total lift of 216kg to claim the gold medal.

Hoai Huong Nguyen of Vietnam finished second overall with 195kg, while India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav registered a total of 194kg to take bronze, finishing just behind Nguyen in a tightly fought contest.

Yadav’s best snatch lift of 88kg earned her the silver medal in that segment, trailing Zhao’s 95kg.

In the clean and jerk, Zhao maintained her dominance with a 121kg lift, while Nguyen’s 108kg effort helped secure her position in the overall silver medal spot.

The event concluded with all three medal positions decided by marginal differences, underlining the competitive standard of the field.

Reacting to the performance, Ashwani Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of the Indian Weightlifting Federation, said the result reflected both determination and progress within the national setup.

“Gyaneshwari’s performance is a strong indicator of India’s growing competitiveness at the Asian level. Narrow margins at this stage show we are closing the gap with the best on the continent,” he said.

The federation also extended its congratulations to Yadav and the wider Indian contingent, noting that the result would serve as motivation for the remaining events in the championship.

Officials added that preparations across categories have been aligned with international standards, with further medal opportunities expected as the competition progresses.

With several weight categories still to be decided, the championships are expected to witness continued high-level performances as Asia’s leading weightlifters compete for continental titles and qualification points in the days ahead.

Trump calls PM Modi tougher negotiator than him

Washington, Feb 14 (IANS) President Donald Trump has called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “much tougher negotiator than him” as the two nations grapple with tariffs.

“He is a much tougher negotiator than me. He is a better negotiator than me. There is not even a contest,” Trump said at a news conference after their bilateral meeting here on Thursday at which tariffs were an important topic.

Trump, who unveiled earlier in the day a plan for a system of reciprocal tariffs, criticised India saying that it was “just about the highest tariff nation anywhere in the world”.

“It’s very hard to sell into India because they have trade barriers, very strong tariffs,” said Trump, who has made the global trade deficit of $98.4 billion that the US racked up a rallying cry in his trade war.

He threatened to impose reciprocal tariffs, mirroring what India and all other countries charge on imports from the US. “We are, right now, a reciprocal nation,” he said. “We’re gonna have whatever India charges (on imports from the US), we’re charging them”.

“We’re just going to do it the easy way, we’re just going to say whatever you charge we charge and I think that’s fair for the people of the United States, and I think it’s actually fair for India,” he said.

When he unveiled the reciprocal tariff plan earlier on Thursday, Trump did not set the new tariffs but only issued a memorandum asking his nominees, Howard Lutnick, for commerce secretary, and Jamieson for international trade representative to come up within 180 days a tariff plan for each country.

Speaking after the memorandum signing, Trump brought up his pet peeve with India, the Harley Davidson motorcycles. “Harley Davidson couldn’t sell their motorbikes in India because of the fact that (in) India, the tax was so high, the tariff was so high,” he said.

“I think they built a factory in India in order to avoid paying the tariffs,” he said. “And that’s what people can do with us. … If you build here, you have no tariffs whatsoever,” he added.

The factsheet produced by the White House on reciprocal tariffs carried factually wrong information about India and Harley Davidson. India “charges a 100 per cent tariff on US motorcycles, while we only charge a 2.4 per cent tariff on Indian motorcycles,” the factsheet said. But India had already reduced tariffs on heavier Harley Davidson to 50 per cent and in this month’s budget reduced it further to 30 per cent, and 40 per cent for other models.

Amit Shah, Rahul Gandhi pay tribute to Sree Narayana Guru on his birth anniversary

New Delhi, Sep 7 (IANS) Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday paid tributes to revered social reformer and spiritual leader Sree Narayana Guru on his birth anniversary, recalling his enduring contributions to social justice, equality, and harmony.

Taking to social media platform X, Amit Shah said, “On the Jayanti of Sree Narayana Guru Ji, I bow to the great saint, philosopher, and reformer who dedicated his life to eradicating social evils and uplifting the marginalised. His timeless message of compassion, equality, and knowledge continues to guide Bharat towards a fair and harmonious society.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also remembered the Guru in his post, writing, “Humble tributes to Sree Narayana Guru on his jayanthi. A great spiritual leader and fearless social reformer, he challenged discrimination and worked for a just, equal, and inclusive society. His vision continues to guide us and strengthen our resolve for social justice.”

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, General Secretary of the Congress, joined in paying homage, saying, “I pay my sincere tribute to Sree Narayana Guru, a revered saint and social reformer from Kerala. His teachings on equality, justice, and compassion continue to inspire and guide us towards a more progressive society.”

Meanwhile, Pranavanand Swami of Narayana Guru Shakti Peeth, Kardal village in Chittapur taluk of Kalaburagi district, announced that 18 personalities would be conferred with the prestigious “Brahmashree Narayana Guru Award” for their contributions in fields such as social work, education, health, agriculture, literature, art, music, theatre, and sports.

He further said that this year’s celebrations hold special significance as they mark the centenary of the historic 1925 meeting between Mahatma Gandhi and Sree Narayana Guru at Sivagiri Mutt in Kerala, a moment that continues to be celebrated as a milestone in India’s social reform movement.

Events, processions, and special prayers were organised across Kerala and other parts of the country to commemorate the Guru’s birth anniversary, with followers reiterating his call for “One Caste, One Religion, One God for Humanity.”
