‘Take your time’: Shastri’s words of wisdom to Gill ahead of Test captaincy debut

New Delhi, June 19 (IANS) As India prepares to begin a new era in Test cricket under the leadership of Shubman Gill, former head coach Ravi Shastri has shared a few thoughtful words of advice for the young skipper.

Speaking on The ICC Review, Shastri urged Gill to stay patient and composed as he steps into one of the most challenging roles in world cricket – leading India in a five-match Test series in England.

“I think, take your time,” Shastri said, offering his guidance to the 25-year-old.

“It’s not going to be easy. He’s been asked to do a tough job – that is to captain India on a tour of England.”

With veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli recently announcing their retirement from the longest format, Gill has been handed the responsibility of leading a relatively young Indian side. The upcoming series, beginning on June 20 at Headingley, also marks India’s first assignment in the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

Despite Gill’s relatively modest record in red-ball cricket – 1,893 runs at an average of 35.05 in 32 Tests – Shastri remains optimistic. He believes the tour will serve as a vital phase in Gill’s leadership journey.

“It’s never easy,” Shastri continued, “but I think he will learn from this exposure.”

Shastri also reflected on Gill’s recent leadership stint in the IPL 2025, where the youngster captained Gujarat Titans. While the team fell short in the Eliminator, Gill’s calm and composed demeanour stood out to the former India coach.

“What I saw of him in the IPL with the Gujarat Titans, he seemed very composed and calm. He’s got a good temperament.”

Gill, who has also been in impressive form in white-ball cricket this year, scored a half-century in India’s recent intra-squad match in Beckenham, signalling his readiness for the challenge ahead. The Test series in England, however, presents a different kind of examination – one that has historically tested the technique and temperament of even India’s most established players.

The tour is also an opportunity for India to break their 17-year Test drought in England, with the last win coming in 2007 under Rahul Dravid’s captaincy.

Shastri concluded by highlighting the broader significance of the journey ahead for Gill. “He’s matured as an individual, he’s got some young players around with him, and I think it’s a learning curve as far as Shubman Gill goes.”

PV Sindhu left stranded in Dubai as flights were cancelled due to Middle East crisis

New Delhi, Feb 28 (IANS) Two-time Olympic medallist shuttler PV Sindhu was left stranded at the Dubai Airport on Saturday en route to Birmingham in England as flight operations were suspended owing to escalating tensions between Iran and the US-Israel. Sindhu is travelling to Birmingham to participate in the prestigious All-England badminton championship.

Sindhu, the former World No.1 in women’s singles, put out a video on her Instagram story, showing a crowded airport as people wait for an update from the authorities in the United Arab Emirates on when flights will resume.

Sindhu, India’s most successful badminton player and a former medallist at the All-England, put out the Insta story on her official handle with the caption, ‘All flights suspended until further notice.’

“PV Sindhu was set to travel to the All England, but got stuck in Dubai. The Badminton Association of India (BAI) is in touch with her as well as Emirates. Other players have already reached, but Sindhu insisted on travelling today and took a morning flight. The issue is expected to be resolved soon,” BAI sources told IANS. Sindhu won a silver medal in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and a bronze medal in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Meanwhile, reports said the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, however, have reached Birmingham for the event to be held at the Utilita Arena Birmingham, King Edwards Road from March 3-8.

The crisis in the Middle East has escalated after Israel and the US launched air strikes on Iran, following which Tehran has threatened to attack ships and shipping interests in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The possibility of attacks has disrupted air travel across the region to reach Europe and Africa.

Dubai Airport has already suspended all operations till further notice, while there have been Large-scale flight cancellations in flights leaving from India to Europe and Africa as they transit via Dubai and the Gulf region.

Melbourne Renegades sign Brendan Doggett to strengthen pace attack for BBL 15

Melbourne, Feb 5 (IANS) The Melbourne Renegades have bolstered their fast-bowling attack ahead of BBL season 15, signing Brendan Doggett on a two-year deal.

Doggett, who previously played for the Adelaide Strikers, Sydney Thunder, and Brisbane Heat, brings with him both T20 experience and recent red-ball success. He is the club’s second free agent signing after Jason Behrendorff joined the Gades in the Big Bash’ inaugural Player Movement Window.

“I’m super excited for the opportunity and really looking forward to pulling on red and playing in front of a packed house at Marvel Stadium. It’s a really strong squad the Gades are putting together with plenty of talent, especially that bowling group and it’s exciting to be part of it,” Doggett said in the statement released on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old played 48 Big Bash matches across eight seasons, collecting 43 wickets at an impressive 8.33 economy rate and best figures of 5/35.

With Behrendorff, Tom Rogers, Fergus O’Neill, and Will Sutherland already in the Renegades’ pace department, Doggett’s inclusion provides another dimension to an already potent bowling attack.

The 33-year-old has spent eight years at the Renegades and is the club’s leading men’s wicket-taker with 104 in 80 matches, but injury concerns over the past two seasons meant he has missed six of their 20 games.

“Brendan is an exciting addition to our squad; he’s a skilled fast bowler with the ability to execute under pressure and take important wickets. We believe Brendan will play an important role for us. To pair him up with Tom (Rogers), Jason (Behrendorff), Adam (Zampa) and Will (Sutherland), we believe we have a powerful bowling unit that boasts variety and the very highest-end talent,” Melbourne Renegades general manager James Rosengarten said.
