People want to see Viksit Bengal under PM Modi’s leadership, says BJP’s Mangal Pandey

Salt Lake, May 4 (IANS) As the vote counting for the West Bengal Assembly elections is underway on Monday, state BJP in-charge Mangal Pandey said that the people want to see development under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking to IANS, Mangal Pandey said, “The initial trends are very clear. The people of the state want a developed Bengal under PM Modi’s leadership. They want a double-engine government.”

State BJP chief Samik Battacharya said that the formation of a BJP government in the state is certain.

“Early trends are coming out. There are highs and lows, like there were during the voting. Let people enjoy. The formation of the (BJP) government is certain,” Bhattacharya told the reporters.

BJP leader Shishir Bajoria also expressed confidence in winning the Assembly elections.

Speaking to IANS, Bajoria said, “With the sunrise, one gets to know how the day will be spent. Everything will become clear in some time, and the BJP is going to create history here with a massive majority.”

The counting of votes cast in the two-phase Assembly polls in West Bengal began at 8 a.m. on Monday, with postal ballots counted first.

On Monday, the counting is on for only 293 of 294 Assembly constituencies in the state, since the ECI, on Saturday, announced repolling for the entire Falta Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas district on May 21, the results for which will be declared on May 24.

This time, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has brought about some changes in the counting pattern. In previous elections, counting of votes started only after the counting of postal ballots was completed fully.

However, this time, counting of only postal ballots will be done for the first 30 minutes, that is, from 8 a.m. to 8.30 a.m. From 8.30 a.m. onwards, the postal ballots and the EVM votes will be counted simultaneously.

“The counting of the postal ballots only for the first 30 minutes is to ensure that the counting of the postal ballots is completed before the completion of the counting of EVM votes. In case, in any counting room, if the counting of postal ballots is not completed before the last two rounds of counting, the counting of EVM votes will be kept on hold for some time, and only postal ballots will be counted during that period. The EVM vote counting will resume after the counting of postal ballots is completed,” said an insider from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO).

He also said that by following this new process, a clear trend in the results will be available by noon.

The contest in West Bengal is mainly between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the principal opposition, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In the last elections in 2021, Trinamool Congress ended tally with 216 seats, followed by the BJP at 77 and All India Secular Front (AISF) at one.

Neither Congress nor the CPI(M)-led Left Front, despite contesting the polls in an alliance, could win from a single constituency. This time, the main challenge for both Congress and Left Front is to open their accounts again in terms of presence in the state Assembly. This time, Left Front and Congress have contested independently, although Left Front had a seat-sharing arrangement with AISF.

The two-phase Assembly polls in West Bengal this time were conducted on April 23 and April 29, with a record turnout of nearly 93 per cent. Most of the exit poll predictions this time, barring two, have predicted the end of the 15-year Trinamool Congress regime and the beginning of the BJP rule in West Bengal.

SAIL records 16.5 pc rise in q4 net profit, declares Rs 1.60 dividend

New Delhi, May 29 (IANS) Government-owned steel behemoth SAIL has recorded a standalone net profit of Rs 1,178 crore for the January-March quarter of 2024-25, which represents a 16.5 per cent increase over the corresponding figure of Rs 1,011 crore for the same quarter of the previous year.

The company has proposed a final dividend of Rs 1.60 per share (face value Rs 10 per share) subject to the approval of Shareholders at the ensuing annual general meeting (AGM).

SAIL’s revenue from operations increased to Rs 29,316 crore during the fourth quarter of 2024-25, which represents a 4.9 per cent increase over the corresponding figure of from Rs 27,958 crore during the same quarter of the previous year.

The public sector giant’s sale volume shot up to 5.33 million tonnes during the quarter compared to 4.56 million tonnes in the same period of the previous financial year.

The PSU’s revenue from operations stood at Rs 29,316.14 crore in Q4 FY25, up 4.9 per cent from Rs 27,958.52 crore in the year-ago period. Compared to Q3FY25, revenue grew 19.7 per cent from Rs 24,489.91 crore.

For the full financial year, SAIL’s consolidated net profit stood at Rs 2,371.82 crore. The company’s revenue from operations for the financial year stood at Rs 1,02,479.06 crore, marginally down from Rs 1,05,378.33 crore recorded in FY24.

SAIL Chairman and Managing Director Amarendu Prakash said that “In an evolving global steel landscape shaped by shifting trade policies and import dynamics, SAIL continues to demonstrate resilience and strategic agility. Our latest financial results underscore our commitment to operational efficiency, sustainable growth, and value creation for stakeholders.”

India plans Rs 65,400 crore push to build its own fighter jet engines by 2035

New Delhi, Nov 3 (IANS) India is gearing up to give its aerospace ambitions a big push with a massive investment of about Rs 65,400 crore ($7.44 billion) to develop and produce fighter jet engines by 2035.

The plan aims to make India self-reliant in one of the most critical areas of defence — aircraft propulsion, according to a Times of Oman report.

The project marks a strong step towards reducing dependence on imports and building engines that can power the next generation of Indian fighter jets.

From the advanced Tejas Mk2 to the stealthy AMCA, and from upgraded fighters to unmanned aircraft, India plans to build around 1,100 engines in the next decade.

S. V. Ramana Murthy, Director of the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), is leading the mission to build homegrown engines that can compete globally.

He said the focus is on creating a strong ecosystem that includes government research, private industry, and global partnerships.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is also preparing for this transformation. It aims to strengthen its fleet to 42 squadrons by 2035 with around 450 new fighter jets — many of which could soon fly on engines made in India.

This will not only boost India’s defence capabilities but also its confidence in technological self-reliance.

One of the major projects in this roadmap is the Tejas Mk2, which follows the success of the existing Tejas aircraft.

Talks with the US-based General Electric for its F414 engine, along with a technology transfer agreement, are expected to help India build world-class engines domestically.

India’s indigenous Kaveri engine programme, which has faced delays in the past, is now being revived with new energy. Its upgraded versions could soon power unmanned combat aircraft, an important part of the country’s future defence strategy.

International collaborations will also play a big role in this mission. Global engine makers like France’s Safran, Britain’s Rolls-Royce, and the US’s GE are in discussions to co-develop a fifth-generation engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) — a project expected to produce its first prototype by 2028.

For the first time, India is inviting private companies to participate in fighter jet development, opening new opportunities for innovation and growth in the aerospace sector.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will work alongside private and global players to share the workload and boost production.

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) vision, the government is actively encouraging global defence manufacturers to set up production facilities in India.

The move signals a shift — from India being a buyer of defence technology to becoming a builder and partner in advanced manufacturing.

Experts say this massive engine development programme will not only strengthen India’s defence readiness but also help boost the economy by creating jobs, encouraging exports, and positioning India as a global player in the aerospace industry.

CM Patel receives fourth GARC report on transforming Gujarat’s planning framework

Ahmedabad, Aug 21 (IANS) Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, on Thursday, received the fourth report of the Gujarat Administrative Reforms Commission (GARC), chaired by his Chief Advisor Hasmukh Adhia, outlining sweeping recommendations to overhaul the state’s planning structure and ensure direct benefits to citizens.

Key proposals include a seven- to eight-fold increase in district planning budgets over the next five years, shifting approval powers from District Planning Boards to District Planning Committees with majority representation from elected members, a fixed annual planning calendar, creation of an integrated planning committee at the taluka level, and the introduction of Village Development Plans to secure grassroots participation in deciding local projects.

The report emphasises decentralisation, accountability, and transparency, positioning villages at the heart of Gujarat’s development model.

With each village mandated to prepare its own plan, endorsed by the gram sabha, residents will have a direct say in priorities such as roads, schools, water supply, and healthcare.

This, the commission notes, will bring Gandhi’s vision of self-rule — where “villages decide their own future” — closer to reality.

The proposed rise in district planning budgets, from stagnant levels to nearly Rs 10,000 crore annually, is expected to unlock more roads, schools, healthcare facilities, and employment opportunities.

At the same time, consolidating multiple taluka-level committees into one integrated body is aimed at cutting delays and confusion, while performance-based accountability and tech-driven monitoring systems are also on the table.

Chief Minister Patel said the recommendations align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat @ 2047, and will strengthen Gujarat’s own roadmap for Viksit Gujarat @ 2047.

The GARC has so far submitted three reports with 25 recommendations already at various stages of implementation.

This fourth report, with nine fresh recommendations, is now available on the commission’s website (garcguj.in/resources).

The GARC is a state-level body set up by the Gujarat government to review, modernise, and improve the administrative machinery of the state.

Its main role is to recommend reforms that make governance more efficient, transparent, citizen-friendly, and accountable.

The key roles of GARC includes: it examines existing administrative structures, rules, and procedures in the state, identifies outdated practices and suggests modernisation, focuses on making government services faster, simpler, and more accessible, recommends digitisation and e-governance initiatives to reduce red tape.
