PM Modi launches Rs 2,970-crore development push in Daman, unveils healthcare, aviation and infra projects

Daman, June 5 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated, dedicated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth around Rs 2,970 crore in Daman, with investments spanning healthcare, civil aviation, tourism, connectivity, infrastructure and public welfare.

The projects were launched during the Prime Minister’s visit to the Union Territory of Daman and Gujarat, where he said the initiatives were aimed at strengthening public services and advancing economic development in the region.

A key highlight of the visit was the inauguration of the new terminal building at NAMO Airport in Daman.

The facility is expected to improve regional air connectivity, support tourism growth and enhance access to the Union Territory for business travellers and visitors.

The airport project forms part of broader efforts to integrate smaller regions into India’s expanding aviation network.

The Prime Minister also dedicated NAMO Hospital to the nation.

The new healthcare facility is expected to strengthen access to advanced medical services for residents of Daman as well as neighbouring areas, reducing dependence on hospitals in larger cities and expanding healthcare infrastructure in the Union Territory.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the package of projects unveiled in Daman covers multiple sectors, including healthcare, civil aviation, tourism, infrastructure development, public welfare and transport connectivity.

The projects are expected to provide a significant boost to the overall development of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.

The visit also included the laying of foundation stones for four major port-related projects in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep worth around Rs 885 crore.

These projects include development of port facilities on the Eastern and Western sides of both Kalpeni Island and Kadmat Island.

The development of these multipurpose jetties will facilitate year-round berthing of large passenger vessels, including cruise vessels of up to 300 metres in length.

The projects will enable safe and efficient passenger and cargo handling and provide integrated facilities for fish handling, fuel distribution, ice supply and boat repair.

These initiatives will strengthen maritime connectivity, support the livelihoods of local fishermen, promote tourism and contribute to the socio-economic development of the islands.

The Daman programme formed the second leg of Prime Minister Modi’s June 5 visit, following engagements in Surat where he reviewed industrial operations in Hazira and launched development projects worth nearly Rs 18,800 crore across the road, power, healthcare and industrial sectors.

With the latest announcements, the combined value of projects launched during the Prime Minister’s Gujarat and Daman visit exceeded Rs 21,000 crore, reflecting continued government investment in connectivity, public infrastructure, healthcare and regional development.
