PM Modi to address IIT Delhi’s 57th convocation ceremony today

New Delhi, Aug 8 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the 57th Convocation Ceremony of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi as the Chief Guest on Saturday, where he will address more than 3,000 graduating students and inaugurate an AI-powered high-performance supercomputing facility at the institute’s Sonipat campus.

The convocation ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. A total of 3,000-plus students, including 587 PhD scholars, will be conferred their degrees during the ceremony.

The Prime Minister will also present IIT Delhi’s prestigious academic honours to meritorious students in recognition of their outstanding performance. The awards include the President’s Gold Medal, Director’s Gold Medal, Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal and Perfect Ten Gold Medal.

“Recognizing outstanding academic excellence, Prime Minister will present the Institute’s most prestigious honours, including the President’s Gold Medal, Director’s Gold Medal, Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal, and Perfect Ten Gold Medals to the meritorious students,” an official statement said.

A major highlight of the event will be the inauguration of “Param Pragya”, an AI-powered high-performance supercomputing facility established at IIT Delhi’s Sonipat campus. The facility is expected to strengthen the institute’s capabilities in artificial intelligence, data science, advanced computing and interdisciplinary research.

“Emphasising India’s commitment to advancing cutting-edge research and artificial intelligence, Prime Minister will inaugurate Param Pragya, an AI-powered high-performance supercomputing facility established at the Sonipat Campus of IIT Delhi,” said the official statement.

The development is also in line with the government’s broader efforts to expand high-performance computing infrastructure and promote advanced research in emerging technologies. The Department of Science and Technology has identified Param Pragya as an AI-based supercomputing facility at IIT Delhi’s Sonepat campus.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi on Friday, Director, IIT Delhi, Rangan Banerjee, said that PM Modi will present the Institute’s most prestigious awards to the meritorious students.

The Director also highlighted that IIT Delhi has launched a landmark national academic and research collaboration network through the signing of MoUs with 18 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) across the country.

Its walls, ceilings, and columns are adorned with vibrant artworks representing regional architecture, cultural traditions, native wildlife, and sacred geography, creating a dynamic and educational experience for commuters.

At every turn, drivers are greeted by iconic imagery, from the spiritual serenity of Uttarakhand’s Ganga ghats to the majestic forts of Rajasthan, the architectural wonder of the Taj Mahal, and the cultural richness of the South and Northeast.

The installation also highlights historical landmarks like the Cellular Jail and symbols of national pride such as the Indian Parliament. A distinctive 3.6-kilometre Tricolour motif runs throughout the tunnel, offering a unified visual narrative, punctuated by Ashok Chakra emblems between each state’s representation.

As reported by India Narrative, the tunnel’s art project, dubbed “Bharat Bhagya Vidhata,” was executed by a team of artists who fused traditional hand-painting techniques with modern production methods.

The creative direction behind the work aimed to democratise art, making it part of everyday life rather than confined to galleries. With towering 7.5 metre high murals, the tunnel surpasses similar global efforts, including South Korea’s renowned tunnel murals.

The journey through the tunnel takes roughly five to six minutes, but the visual impact lingers. Motifs such as birds in flight and the banyan tree evoke themes of continuity, rootedness, and freedom, subtly reinforcing the idea of unity in diversity.

By transforming a routine commute into a cultural voyage, the Dwarka Tunnel has redefined urban infrastructure, offering not just connectivity, but also an artistic experience that celebrates the soul of India.

Grenade attack on temple in Amritsar; cops suspect Pak hand

Amritsar, March 15 (IANS) In a daring incident, two bike-borne miscreants hurled a hand grenade at a temple in Punjab’s holy city Amritsar and triggered a powerful blast.

However, no one was injured in the explosion. This was the 12th such incident in the past four months in Punjab that shares a long border with Pakistan.

On previous occasions, the attacks were on police establishments, mainly comprising police stations.

The CCTV footage showed the miscreants arriving at the location on a bike with a flag mounted on it. After waiting for a few seconds, one of them threw a grenade, and both fled the spot.

The grenade caused a massive explosion, triggering a panic-like situation after the attack.

The attack took place on Friday night in the Khandwala area of Amritsar.

Police believe the attack was carried out as part of a planned strategy to trigger fear amid the Holi festivities.

The temple’s wall was damaged in the explosion. Fortunately, a priest and his family, who were residing on the upper floor of the temple, were unharmed.

Local resident Kiranpreet Singh, who is an advocate by profession, said, “At around 12 am, two people came on a bike, stopped outside the Thakur Dwara Mandir, conducted a recce and threw a grenade at the temple.

“The blast was so powerful that is also affected the nearby buildings, breaking windowpanes. The police later reached the spot. As per the evidence, this was a grenade attack.”

Amritsar Police Commissioner, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, told the media that efforts “are being made by Pakistan to disturb the atmosphere here, and some local youths are involved in this. I urge our youths not to get involved in such activities”.

State minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal said some miscreants hurled a grenade at a temple after 12 am.

“The situation is under control. Two people have been identified. They will be caught within a day,” he said.

BJP National Spokesperson Shehzad wrote on X, “Series of such attacks have taken place on police posts, etc over the last few months. Law and order in Punjab has totally collapsed under the AAP and (Chief Minister) Bhagwant Mann.

Gurugram: Three held for performing car stunts, vehicles seized

Gurugram, April 1 (IANS) Three people have been arrested for allegedly performing stunts in a moving car in the Badshahpur area here in Gurugram, police said on Tuesday.

The Police have also seized three cars that were allegedly found performing stunts recklessly at high speed. The stunts, which disrupted traffic for several minutes, posed a risk to commuters, police said.

The accused were identified as Rohan Yadav, Krishna Yadav, residents of the village Fazilpur Jharssa Gurugram, and Hitesh Yadav, a resident of Sector-21 Gurugram.

An official said that they have also seized a Mahindra Thar, a Swift, and a Verna.

The police also collected CCTV footage that corroborated their reckless act and traced them through the vehicle’s number, and zeroed in on the accused.

The matter came to light after a video purportedly showing a Mahindra Thar, Swift, and Verna car performing stunts in the Badshahpur area made rounds on social media.

The official said that taking cognizance of this, Gurugram Police registered a case under the relevant sections in Police Station Badshahpur on Monday.

“The accused Rohan and Krishna are real brothers. Accused Rohan has studied BBA, Krishna has studied BCA, and accused Hitesh has studied MBA,” he said.

He added that during questioning, the accused said they did the act just for enjoyment and for making videos.

“The three suspects were released on bail later on Monday night, but their vehicles remain impounded. The case is under investigation,” the official said.

Earlier in January, four men were arrested for allegedly performing stunts on a moving Ford Mustang GT and shooting a video of the act to post on social media in an underpass on Golf Course Road in DLF Phase-I, Gurugram.

“We appeal to the people not to engage in such acts, which disrupted traffic for several minutes and posed a risk to the commuters’ lives. If anyone is found doing such a thing, strict action will be taken against them,” said Sandeep Kumar, Spokesperson of the Gurugram Police.
