Rajasthan Congress leadership sets example for other states: Rahul Gandhi

Jaipur, June 1 (IANS) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday praised the coordination between Rajasthan Congress President Govind Singh Dotasra and Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully, describing it as an example for other states.

Speaking during a welcome ceremony at Kishangarh Airport in Ajmer, Rahul Gandhi said, “There is excellent coordination between the State President and the CLP Leader (Leader of Opposition). This serves as an example for other states as well.”

Rahul Gandhi arrived in Rajasthan to attend the concluding session of the Congress party’s 10-day national Chintan Shivir (brainstorming camp) being held in Pushkar.

At the camp, Rahul Gandhi interacted with party office-bearers, including 50 district presidents from Rajasthan and 15 from Delhi.

Family members of the 65 district presidents were also invited to the Wild Rose Resort in Pushkar, where Rahul Gandhi met them and posed for photographs.

Bikaner City Congress President Madan Gopal said Rahul Gandhi stressed the importance of policy, principles and dedication within the party.

According to Madan Gopal, Rahul Gandhi remarked that the Congress is a party of ‘Tapasya’ (dedication and sacrifice), unlike parties driven solely by the pursuit of power. He emphasised that efforts should remain focused on serving the people.

“Those who perform good work will be promoted in the future. For those who do not work, there will be a different path,” Rahul Gandhi reportedly said.

Rahul Gandhi landed at Kishangarh Airport at around 10.05 a.m., where he was welcomed by former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Rajasthan Congress President Govind Singh Dotasra, State In-charge Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully, and former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot.

Kishangarh MLA Vikas Chaudhary presented Rahul Gandhi with a traditional plough as a symbolic gift before he departed for Pushkar.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge was also scheduled to attend the Chintan Shivir on Monday, but his visit was cancelled.

Heavy rain lashed Pushkar during the afternoon as Congress workers waited outside the resort carrying posters to greet Rahul Gandhi.

Following the conclusion of the 10-day Chintan Shivir and a final interaction with Seva Dal workers, Rahul Gandhi departed from Pushkar for Kishangarh Airport.

Party workers told IANS that Rahul Gandhi called on all district presidents to stay united and work as party workers rather than pursuing selfish interests.

Former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot, speaking to the media after the session, said such deliberation camps are being organised across states and that Rahul Gandhi’s vision is to strengthen the role and engagement of district presidents within the party.

Bengal school jobs case: CBI gets permission to collect voice sample of prime accused

Kolkata, Jan 10 (IANS) A special court in Kolkata, on Friday, has given permission to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), to collect the voice samples of a prime accused in the case, Sujay Krishna Bhadra.

As per the directive of the special court, the CBI will have to first present Bhadra in court on January 21 and after that their officials will be able to collect his voice samples.

However, the special court has maintained that the collection of the voice sample can be done subject to the consent of Bhadra.

To recall, the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which is conducting a parallel probe in the school job case, had already collected the voice sample of Bhadra, who is currently admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata.

At the same time, the same special court permitted Kalyanmoy Bhattacharya, one of the accused named in the chargesheet of ED, to go back for the time being to his workplace in the US subject to certain conditions.

Bhattacharya is the son-in-law of the former West Bengal education minister and Trinamool Congress secretary general Partha Chatterjee, whose name appears first in the list of the accused named by ED in the school jobs case.

Chatterjee is currently in judicial custody.

He was arrested by the ED officials in July 2022 by the ED officials after the latter recovered huge cash and gold from the twin residences of his close aide Arpita Mukherjee, which is also named as an accused by the central agency in the case.

In its subsequent chargesheet, ED had named 29 individuals and 24 corporate entities and trusts as accused.

One such trust is Babli Chatterjee Memorial Trust, named after the deceased wife of Partha Chatterjee.

Already the charge framing process in the ED- registered case in the alleged school job scam has been completed and the trial process in the matter is slated to begin this month only.

Mizoram: Biometric details of 12,170 refugees from Myanmar collected

Aizawl, Oct 8 (IANS) Mizoram authorities have so far collected biometric details of around 39 per cent of the nearly 31,300 Myanmar refugees taking shelter in the state after fleeing their country following the military coup in February 2021.

An official of the Mizoram Home Department said that biometric data of around 12,170 refugees from Myanmar have been collected so far.

“Serchhip district administration in central Mizoram first launched the biometric enrolment drive for the refugees on July 30 and subsequently other districts initiated the biometric enrolment process,” the official said.

Following the advice of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the biometric enrolment process has been underway through the ‘Foreigners Identification Portal and Biometric Enrolment’.

The official admitted that the process has been facing multiple challenges, including technical difficulties and unstable internet connectivity in remote areas and added that despite these problems, the authorities have managed to continue the enrolment process, though at a slow speed.

Besides the Myanmar refugees, around 3,000 migrants from the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) of Bangladesh have taken shelter in three districts of Mizoram over the past two years.

Most of the Bangladeshi refugees (around 2,000) have sheltered in Lawngtlai district in southern Mizoram, which borders both Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Tribal refugees from Bangladesh have also been accommodated in Lunglei district and Serchhip district. Both the Myanmar and Bangladesh refugees are sheltered in camps, relatives’ and rented houses in all the 11 districts in the Northeastern state.

The Home Department official said that it is easier to collect the biometric details of those refugees taking shelter in the camps but it is problematic for those staying in relatives’ and rented houses in hundreds of villages.

“To tackle this problem, the concerned authorities in the districts have sought the help of Village Councils and Civil Society Organisations specially the Young Mizo Association YMA),” the official said.

Along with biometric data, the enrolment process includes the collection of biographical details including names, addresses, parents’ names, and any employment histories both in Myanmar and in Mizoram.

The Mizoram government before starting of the collection of biometric details of the refugees has provided vigorous training to the district-level officials to collect biometrics and biographic data of the refugees taking shelter in the state, which shares 510 km and 318 km unfenced international borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, respectively.

After a military coup in Myanmar in February 2021, refugees, including women and children from the neighbouring country, started coming to Mizoram seeking shelter, and now their numbers have increased to around 31,300.

The Bangladeshi Bawm community tribals from CHT have also been staying in Mizoram for over two years after they fled from their country due to ethnic troubles, following the Bangladesh Army’s launch of a crackdown on the tribals.

The Myanmar refugees, mostly Chin tribes having almost full ethnic and cultural similarity with the majority Mizos of Mizoram while the Bawm, also known as Bawmzo, are a small ethnic group primarily residing in the CHT of Bangladesh, and they have also almost full ethnic and cultural resemblance with the Mizos of Mizoram.

Myanmar’s Chin state shares 510 km of mountainous borders with six Mizoram districts — Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual and Serchhip. Mizoram’s three districts, Mamit, Lunglei and Lawngtlai, share a 318 km-long border with Bangladesh.

PM Modi to share thoughts on nation first at NCC rally tomorrow

New Delhi, Jan 27 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the annual National Cadet Corps (NCC) PM Rally on Wednesday at the Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi, sharing his thoughts on nation first and character development, an official said.

The NCC PM Rally will mark the grand culmination of the month-long NCC Republic Day Camp 2026, which witnessed the participation of 2,406 cadets from across the country, including 898 girl cadets.

The rally will also see the participation of 207 youth and officers from 21 foreign countries, said the official.

The theme of this year’s rally is ‘Rashtra Pratham – Kartavya Nishtha Yuva’, reflecting the spirit of duty, discipline and national commitment among India’s youth, an official statement said on Tuesday.

On the occasion, a vibrant cultural programme will be presented by NCC cadets, members of Rashtriya Rangshala and National Service Scheme, showcasing their role in nation building, social service and character development.

Earlier, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited the camp and described NCC cadets as the nation’s second line of defence.

He called upon youth to draw inspiration from their vital role in raising public awareness when mock drills were conducted across the country during Operation Sindoor.

Addressing the cadets at the NCC Republic Day Camp in Delhi Cantonment, the Defence Minister said, “As the world is going through a period of uncertainty, our youth must remain physically, mentally and emotionally strong and be prepared to take on every challenge.”

Recalling Operation Sindoor, Rajnath Singh said, “Indian Armed Forces destroyed terrorists based in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, which was a befitting reply to the unfortunate and cowardly terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam. Our soldiers acted with courage and restraint. We targeted and destroyed only those who hurt us, not anyone else. This was possible as they are strong physically, mentally, and emotionally.”

The Defence Minister termed NCC as an excellent medium to upgrade the youth who, in turn, make their invaluable contribution to nation-building.

He added that the NCC instils discipline and patriotism in cadets, while helping them to overcome the problem of ‘lack of focus’.

He said that the NCC teaches patience, continuity and focus, which are requisites for life’s big battles, the nation’s great responsibilities, and character building.

This focus, Rajnath Singh added, is reflected in every aspect of their lives, whether they join the Armed Forces or become doctors, engineers, teachers, scientists, administrators and politicians.
