RJD delegation meets Bihar DGP over Muzaffarpur killing, seeks action

Patna, April 16 (IANS) A delegation of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Thursday met Bihar Director General of Police Vinay Kumar, seeking justice for the family of Jagatveer Rai in connection with an alleged killing in Muzaffarpur district.

A six-member delegation led by RJD state president Mangani Lal Mandal submitted details of the case and urged swift and impartial action.

The case pertains to the alleged murder of Jagatveer Rai, son of Bhola Rai, reportedly involving the Station House Officer (SHO) of Gaighat Police Station in Chornia village.

The delegation also submitted a copy of a letter addressed to the DGP, containing findings and observations gathered by Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav during his visit to the incident site on March 25, 2026.

DGP Vinay Kumar acknowledged receipt of the communication and assured the delegation that the matter is being treated with utmost seriousness.

He confirmed that a team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) has already examined the firearm of the accused SHO, and that a murder case has been registered against him.

The DGP further said that the investigation is ongoing, and that key reports, including forensic findings and supporting evidence, are awaited.

He emphasised that the administration is committed to ensuring justice and that no accused will be allowed to evade the law.

The delegation included Uday Narayan Chaudhary, National Vice President of RJD; Alakh Niranjan alias Binu Yadav, National General Secretary; Dr Tanveer Hasan, State Vice President; Ranvijay Sahu, State Principal General Secretary; Niranjan Rai, former MLA from Gaighat Assembly constituency; Ramesh Gupta, District President, Muzaffarpur; and Mohd. Ejaz Ahmed, State Spokesperson.

The incident occurred in Chornia village under the Gaighat police station area in the third week of March this year, when a police team had gone to arrest an accused in a case related to the POCSO Act.

A violent clash broke out between villagers and police, during which several police personnel were injured and government vehicles were damaged.

Amid the chaos, Jagatveer Rai lost his life due to a gunshot wound, triggering widespread tension in the region.

The victim’s family has alleged that the then Station House Officer deliberately shot him.

However, the police maintain that the firing was done in self-defence following a life-threatening attack by the mob.

Bengal: Man arrested for raping married woman in Swarupnagar

Kolkata, Dec 24 (IANS) Police have arrested a 25-year-old man from Tepul in Swarupnagar, North 24 Parganas district, on charges of raping a married woman.

The arrest was made on Wednesday following a complaint lodged at the Swarupnagar police station.

According to officials, the accused allegedly raped the woman when she was alone at home in the absence of her husband.

It is further alleged that he threatened to kill her husband and children once the matter came to light.

With the support of her husband and local villagers, the victim submitted a written complaint to the police.

Acting on the complaint, the accused was taken into custody earlier in the day and produced before the Basirhat sub-divisional court.

Police sources revealed that the victim’s husband had previously accused the same man of harassing his wife about seven months ago.

At that time, local residents intervened, and the accused’s family gave a written assurance that he would not trouble any woman again.

Following this, the man left the locality for some time but returned a few days ago.

On December 16, he allegedly raped the woman in the afternoon while she was alone at home.

When her husband returned later that day, the victim narrated the incident to him. A formal complaint was subsequently lodged, and after nearly eight days of investigation, police arrested the accused.

On Wednesday, the victim was taken to the Basirhat Sub-Divisional Court, where her confidential statement was recorded before a judicial magistrate. The incident has caused widespread outrage and unrest in the area.

A senior officer of the North 24 Parganas district police confirmed: “A complaint of rape was received at Swarupnagar police station. Based on the complaint, a case was initiated, and a search was launched to apprehend the accused.”

He said that the accused has now been arrested and produced before the district court, where police custody was sought.

“The investigation is ongoing,” he said.

Food processing PLI: 171 firms approved, over 2.89 lakh jobs generated

New Delhi, March 29 (IANS) A total of 171 food processing companies have been approved for assistance under the Production-Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI) and incentives worth Rs 1,155.296 crore has been disbursed, out of which Rs 13.266 crore has been disbursed to MSMEs in 20 eligible cases (as of February 28), the government has informed.

The PLISFPI scheme was approved by the Union Cabinet in March 2021, with an outlay of Rs 10,900 Crore. The Scheme is being implemented over a six-year period from 2021-22 to 2026-27.

According to data reported by the scheme’s beneficiaries, an investment of Rs 8,910 crore has been made across 213 locations.

As of October 31, 2024, the scheme has reportedly generated employment of over 2.89 lakh.

The scheme has significantly contributed to the country’s overall growth and development by scaling up domestic manufacturing, enhancing value addition, boosting the domestic production of raw materials, and creating employment opportunities.

It supports large companies, millet-based products, innovative and organic products, as well as small and medium enterprises, while also promoting Indian brands globally, according to the Ministry of Food Processing Industries.

The government has also sanctioned 1,608 projects including 41 Mega food Parks, 394 Cold Chain projects, 75 Agro-processing Clusters projects, 536 Food Processing Units, 61 Creation of Backward & Forward Linkages and 44 Operation Greens projects under corresponding component schemes of PMKSY across the country.

A total sum of Rs 6,198.76 crore has been disbursed as grants in aid/ subsidy since inception of component schemes of PMKSY (as of February 28), the ministry informed.

The umbrella Central sector scheme SAMPADA — Scheme for Agro-marine processing and Development of Agro-processing Clusters — was approved in May 2017, with a total allocation of Rs 6,000 crore for the implementation period.

The continuation of the SAMPADA Yojana with an allocation of Rs 4,600 crore has been further approved until March 31, 2026.

Woman killed, daughter injured in attack by youth in Vizag

Visakhapatnam, April 2 (IANS) A woman was killed and her daughter injured in an attack by a youth, who was in love with the latter, in Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam on Wednesday, police said.

The shocking incident occurred in Swayamkrushi Nagar under the Madhurawada Police Station limits.

Visakhapatnam Police Commissioner Shankhabrata Bagchi told media persons that D. Naveen, 26, attacked the woman and her daughter in their house with a knife.

Lakshmi, 43, died on the spot while her daughter, Nakka Deepika, 20, was injured. She was admitted to a hospital.

The Police Commissioner said Naveen was in love with Deepika for the last six years. He wanted to marry the girl, but her father had asked him to wait for one year as he did not like his conduct. Apparently enraged over this, Naveen came to Deepika’s house on Wednesday and attacked her and her mother with a knife.

The accused escaped after the attack. The police chief said the police team launched a hunt for the accused and arrested him in Srikakulam district. He was being brought to Visakhapatnam and would be produced before a court.

The Police Commissioner said Deepika’s condition was stable. After graduation, the girl stayed home.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock over the incident. He directed officials to ensure the best possible treatment for the injured woman and asked police to take stringent action against the person involved in the attack.

Home Minister V. Anitha also condemned the incident. She spoke to Police Commissioner Bagchi over the phone and enquired about the condition of the injured girl.

Anitha directed the police to ensure that the culprit got the harshest punishment. She asked officials to provide the best treatment to the injured girl.

The state has witnessed a series of crimes against women in recent months. The opposition YSR Congress Party accused the TDP-led coalition government of being negligent in addressing rising cases of rape and murder of women.
