Telugu states sizzle, mercury soars to 48.1 degrees Celsius in Andhra’s Piduguralla

Hyderabad, May 21 (IANS) Telugu states are in the grip of intense heat wave conditions as Piduguralla in Andhra Pradesh sizzled at 48.1 degrees Celsius while Dilawarpur in Telangana recorded 46.5 degrees Celsius on Thursday.

As many as 19 districts in Telangana recorded the highest temperature of 46 degrees Celsius and above, while the maximum temperature in 18 districts of Andhra Pradesh exceeded 45 degrees Celsius.

In light of the heat intensity rising to record levels in both states, authorities urged the public to remain vigilant.

According to Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority Managing Director Prakhar Jain, a maximum temperature of 48.1 degrees Celsius was recorded in Piduguralla in Palnadu district. He said that temperatures exceeded 45 degrees in 18 districts.

He further revealed that out of the state’s 28 districts, temperatures exceeding 44 degrees were recorded in 200 mandals across 20 districts. He specifically highlighted that the heat intensity was particularly severe in 26 mandals of Palnadu district, 23 in Prakasam, 22 in Krishna, 21 in Eluru, 20 in Bapatla, 15 in NTR, 14 in Guntur, and 11 in Markapuram.

As the severe heat is likely to persist until Monday (May 25), he advised people to postpone travel between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

He stated that on Friday (May 22), severe heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in 15 mandals, while heatwave conditions are expected to affect 219 mandals.

Temperatures ranging from 45 degrees Celsius to 47 degrees Celsius are likely to be recorded in certain areas of the Alluri Sitarama Raju, Polavaram, Konaseema, East Godavari, West Godavari, Eluru, Krishna, NTR, Guntur, Bapatla, Palnadu, Markapuram, and Prakasam districts.

Temperatures ranging from 43 degrees Celsius to 45 degrees Celsius are likely to be recorded in certain areas of the Kakinada and Nellore districts.

Temperatures ranging from 40 degrees Celsius to 43 degrees Celsius are likely to be recorded in certain areas of the Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram Manyam, Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Kurnool, Nandyal, Anantapur, Sri Sathya Sai, YSR Kadapa, Annamayya, Chittoor, and Tirupati districts.

In Telangana, the highest temperature of 46.5 degrees Celsius was recorded in Dilawarpur in Nirmal district. Dharmasagar in Hanumakonda district, Choppadandi in Karimnagar district, and Odela in Peddapalli district recorded 46.4 degrees Celsius.

Endapalli in Jagtial, Jangaon in Jangaon district, Penuballi in Khammam, Asifabad in Kumaram Bheem, Kotapally in Mancherial and Balkonda in Nizamabad recorded the maximum temperature of 46.3 degrees Celsius.

According to IMD, heat wave conditions are very likely to prevail at isolated pockets in Komuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, and Nagarkurnool districts of Telangana on Friday.

K’taka shocker: Minor stabs 15-year-old friend to death in fit of rage

Hubballi, May 13 (IANS) In a shocking incident, a minor stabbed his 15-year-old friend after an altercation while playing a game in Gurusiddeshwara Nagar in Hubballi city, Karnataka.

The deceased has been identified as Chetan Rakkasagi.

The accused juvenile has been detained and sent to an observation centre.

Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar visited the hospital and consoled the grieving family.

“This is an unfortunate incident involving children and a petty quarrel. In my entire service, this is the first time I’ve seen such a serious crime like murder committed by such young children over a minor issue,” he said, appealing to parents to be more attentive to their children’s behaviour.

According to the police, the accused and the victim were neighbours. On Monday night, following a petty argument during a game, the accused brought a knife from his house and stabbed Chetan in the abdomen. The other children who were playing with them fled after Chetan collapsed.

The accused’s mother rushed out upon hearing the commotion and took Chetan to KIMS Hospital in Hubballi, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Chetan had completed the ninth standard, while the accused had passed the sixth standard. The two were reportedly close friends and regularly played together with other children during the summer holidays.

Preliminary investigations confirmed that the boys were close friends and used to play together daily in front of their houses. The police have taken up further investigation into the case.

On May 18, 2024, a teenager killed his minor brother for the latter’s game addiction in Bengaluru. The accused was identified as Shivakumar, a resident of Neriga village near Anekal town on the outskirts of Bengaluru.

Shivakumar confessed to the Sarjapura police that he had hammered his 15-year-old brother Pranesh to death as he was upset over the latter taking his mobile and playing games all day.

Assault on Nepali students: Five more KIIT University staff held

Bhubaneswar, Feb 20 (IANS) The Commissionerate Police on Thursday arrested five more staffers of the KIIT University on the charges of assaulting Nepali students during their forceful eviction from the University campus in Bhubaneswar on Monday.

The accused persons, identified as Ajaya Kumar Swain (46), Saroj Kumar Routray (45), Chandan Kumar Swain (29), Sudhansusekhar Behera (41), and Ramakanta Sethi (37) are the employees of the KIIT university.

The police in a press statement said that on February 17, when the students were vacating the hostel and University campus, the accused persons and other staff suddenly reached there and asked the students to vacate the place immediately.

The police further added that the accused persons got enraged when they noticed the students were delaying in vacating the hostel. They hurled abuses at the students and assaulted them.

“Following a thorough examination of the CCTV footage of the incident of attack, the police apprehended the accused and forwarded them to court. The court on the basis of the evidence produced by the police rejected their bail pleas and sent them to judicial custody,” said the Bhubaneswar Police on Thursday.

Earlier, the city police had arrested five persons including three senior directors and two security guards of the University on Tuesday.

The police later came under fire after the accused persons managed to get bail from the court on the very same day.

On the other hand, the Odisha Higher Education Department on Thursday asked KIIT University founder Achyuta Samanta to appear before the High Level Committee on February 21 for enquiry into the alleged suicide of the female Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal and subsequent mistreatment meted out against students by the authorities of the University.

He has also been asked to all the necessary produce documents related to the incident. Notably, the deceased Prakriti, a third-year BTech (Computer Science) student of the KIIT University ended her life on Sunday following continued harassment by her estranged boyfriend Advik Shrivastava, a student of B.Tech (Mechanical).

After the news of her death came to fore, the students staged a protest demanding justice for the deceased.

This irked the University authorities who asked all the Nepali students to leave the University campus immediately. The authorities of the private university even forcefully evicted the students from the campus and also allegedly assaulted them on Monday.

BJP launches campaign on rural employment scheme in Punjab

Chandigarh, Jan 7 (IANS) To make people aware of the alleged misinformation being spread by Opposition parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress, regarding the Viksit Bharat G RAM G Scheme, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday launched a statewide public awareness campaign from Kheowali Dhaba village in Fazilka district of Punjab.

State BJP President Sunil Jakhar said that under the new scheme it has been ensured that the money meant for poor labourers reaches them directly, and the number of employment days has been increased from 100 to 125 days.

He said that the new law has tightened the noose around those who used corruption to deprive the poor of their rightful dues, which is why the AAP, the Congress and other Opposition parties are opposing it.

Calling the rural employment scheme a major initiative of the Government of India in the interest of the poor, the BJP state president said, “Now the poor’s money will not go into the pockets of contractors and leaders, but will be credited directly into the labourer’s bank account.”

He said that corruption has been eliminated from the scheme, which is why those who benefitted through corrupt practices under the previous Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme are protesting, as their illegal income is now coming to an end.

Jakhar further said that more than 6,500 cases of corruption under MGNREGA have come to light in Punjab, yet Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has taken no action against even a single corrupt person who looted the rights of the poor.

Continuing his sharp attack on Chief Minister Mann, BJP chief Jakhar said that this year the state government provided only 26 days of employment under the old scheme, which it is now defending.

He questioned the Chief Minister, asking that if the old scheme was so effective, why 100 days of employment were not provided to labourers.

He said that in reality the earlier scheme fixed no accountability, whereas under the new law responsibility will be clearly defined, which is why the state government is lamenting and opposing it.

Reminding Chief Minister Mann of the Assembly elections slated in early 2027, Jakhar said that the Delhi leaders to whom he has mortgaged the state government will eventually leave, but he alone will have to face the anger and curses of the people of Punjab.

He said there is still time for the Chief Minister to take stock of the deteriorating law and order situation in the state and work in public interest.

He added that the government’s much-publicised “war against drugs” has been reduced to a mere public relations exercise, with neither drugs nor gangsterism being effectively curbed on the ground.

Later, Jakhar visited a site adjacent to the residence of the Deputy Commissioner of Fazilka, where crores of rupees were allegedly embezzled in the name of the MGNREGA scheme to create a so-called lake.

He pointed out that no lake exists at the site, even though payments have already been made from the government treasury for the project.
