Three killed as RTC bus rams into stationary lorry in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam, May 31 (IANS) Three persons were killed and seven others injured when an RTC bus rammed into a stationary lorry at Gajuwaka near Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, early Sunday morning.

According to police, the accident occurred near Srinagar when a bus belonging to Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) collided with the lorry parked on the road around 4 a.m.

Two women and a driver died on the spot. Seven others were injured, and they have been admitted to King George Hospital in Visakhapatnam.

The bus was on its way from Rajamahendravam to Ramabhadrapuram in Vizianagaram district. There were 30 passengers on board the bus.

Alerted by passersby, Gajuwaka police rushed to the spot and shifted the injured. A police officer said they have registered a case and taken up further investigation.

The Super Luxury bus of APSRTC was badly mangled in the collision.

State Transport Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy expressed shock over the accident involving the RTC bus at Gajuwaka.

The minister conveyed his profound condolences to the families of the two women and the driver who lost their lives in the accident.

The minister visited KGH Hospital to console the families of the deceased and call on the injured.

On this occasion, the minister announced that an ex gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh would be provided to the families of the deceased.

He inquired with the doctors regarding the health condition of the injured and directed officials to ensure that they receive the highest quality of medical care.

The minister was accompanied by MLA and TDP State President Palla Srinivas, District Collector Abhishek, and other officials. The minister assured the affected families that both the government and the RTC would stand by them in this difficult time.

The transport minister directed officials to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the causes of the accident and submit a report.

Meanwhile, in another accident in Andhra Pradesh’s Annamayya district, two RTC buses collided head-on, resulting in injuries to four persons.

The accident occurred near Aravidu in Galiveedu Mandal. Tirumalayya, driver of one of the buses and three passengers sustained injuries. The injured were shifted to a hospital in Galiveedu.

India’s informal sector records robust growth despite global headwinds

New Delhi, Nov 25 (IANS) Both the number of establishments and overall employment in India’s unincorporated non-agricultural sector enterprises recorded a robust growth in the July-September quarter of 2025 compared to the same quarter of the previous year, despite global headwinds, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Statistics on Tuesday.

The estimated number of establishments increased to 7.97 crore in the July-September quarter this year from the corresponding figure of 7.34 crore in the same quarter of the previous year. This also marks an increase over the 7.94 crore establishments estimated in the preceding April-June quarter of 2025.

The employment in the incorporated non-agricultural sector stood close to 12.86 crore, which reflects a notable rise over the figure of a little over 12 crore workers recorded in the same period of the previous year.

The use of the internet among enterprises in this sector increased steadily from 36 per cent in April-June 2025 to 39 per cent during July–September 2025.

The proportion of establishments employing hired workers in the unincorporated non-agricultural sector was recorded at 13.41 per cent in this quarter, reflecting a marginal increase over the last quarter.

Working owners continued to account for the largest share (59.98 per cent) in the July-September 2025 quarter, as in the earlier quarters. However, the percentage share of hired workers during the quarter increased from 24.38 per cent in April-June to 25.91 per cent in this quarter.

The increase in the estimated urban workforce from 6.61 crore (previous quarter) to 6.91 crore (current quarter) indicates a rise in employment in the enterprises in urban areas, reflecting greater labour absorption and expanded economic activity during this period.

The July-September quarter marked a notable recovery in the unincorporated manufacturing sector, with improvements in both employment and establishment numbers over the last quarter. The share of establishments in the manufacturing sector increased from 26 per cent to 27 per cent, and that of employment in the manufacturing sector increased from 26 per cent to 28 per cent.

The women workforce remained impressive, constituting 28.7 per cent of total employment in the sector, the statement added.

‘Unbearable pain and sorrow that words cannot express’: TVK chief Vijay on TN stampede

Chennai, Sep 28 (IANS) Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Chief and actor Vijay has expressed grief and shock over the stampede that occurred during his party’s campaign rally in Karur Tamil Nadu’s Karur, which claimed dozens of lives and left many others injured.

A large crowd had gathered for the TVK event in Karur on Saturday evening, when a sudden rush in a congested section led to chaos and a deadly crush.

According to officials, at least 36 people, including women and children, died after being trampled or suffocated, while many others were rushed to nearby hospitals, several in critical condition.

Emergency services and police personnel worked through Saturday evening to control the situation and rescue those caught in the crowd.

Sharing his anguish on Saturday on X, Vijay said, “My heart is shattered; I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express. I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for the swift recovery of those receiving treatment in the hospital.”

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, have announced immediate relief, including compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the victims’ families and Rs 1 lakh to those injured and special medical care for the injured victims.

Senior Ministers and officials have been dispatched to oversee rescue and hospital support, while a judicial inquiry has been ordered to determine the cause of the stampede and recommend safety measures for future events.

Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and several other prominent political leaders expressed deep sorrow over the stampede tragedy that claimed 36 lives and left 60 others injured.

The incident occurred when a large crowd surged forward at the packed venue where Vijay was addressing his supporters as part of his statewide campaign.

Eyewitnesses described sudden pushing and panic in the congested space, causing people to fall and get trampled.

Police and emergency teams rushed to rescue those trapped, but the density of the gathering made the effort extremely challenging.

Among the injured were at least three children admitted to intensive care.

NDA campaign kicks off at PM Modi rally near Chennai; Dhinakaran targets Stalin over ‘dynastic politics’

Chennai, Jan 23 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s election rally near Madurantakam on the outskirts of Chennai on Friday marked the formal launch of the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) campaign for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, with alliance leaders mounting a sharp offensive against the ruling DMK government.

Addressing the gathering ahead of and during the Prime Minister’s programme, AMMK leader T.T.V. Dhinakaran accused Chief Minister M.K. Stalin of indulging in dynastic politics while the people of the state continue to face distress.

He alleged that instead of focusing on governance, law and order and economic relief, the Chief Minister was concentrating on grooming his son, Udhayanidhi Stalin, to eventually take over as Chief Minister.

“When the entire state is suffering, the Chief Minister’s priority is to promote his son,” he said, accusing the DMK of betraying the trust placed in it by the people.

According to him, Tamil Nadu was witnessing rising crime, violence, and a breakdown of public order, even as the government remained focused on family-centric politics.

The NDA rally, held in the presence of Prime Minister Modi, brought together senior leaders of the alliance on a single stage, signalling unity ahead of the crucial polls.

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss, Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) president G.K. Vasan and leaders of other NDA constituents were present at the rally.

Dhinakaran said Prime Minister Modi, now serving his third consecutive term, was determined to put an end to what he described as “anti-people family rule” in Tamil Nadu.

He asserted that the NDA aims to offer an alternative political culture centred on development, security and corruption-free governance.

Explaining the AMMK’s decision to join the NDA, he acknowledged that there had been disagreements and conflicts in the past. However, he said these differences were consciously set aside in the larger interest of Tamil Nadu.

“We accepted the Prime Minister’s invitation without confusion or pressure and joined the alliance with clarity and conviction,” he said.

Invoking the legacy of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, he said she had taught leaders the importance of taking firm positions — both in support and in opposition — whenever public interest demanded it.

As Prime Minister Modi’s rally set the tone for the NDA’s campaign, dynastic politics and governance failures emerged as key themes in the alliance’s attack on the ruling DMK.
