Tripura CM Saha meets PM Modi, seeks AIIMS and major infrastructure boost for state

New Delhi/Agartala, May 26 (IANS) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and held extensive discussions on a wide range of developmental issues, including the establishment of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the state, officials said.

A senior official of the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said that Chief Minister Saha also discussed with the Prime Minister the extension of the National Highway from Kamalpur to Shantir Bazar in Dhalai district to strengthen road connectivity and improve regional infrastructure.

During the meeting, Chief Minister Saha raised several key issues concerning the overall development of Tripura, including the expansion of the dairy industry, development of sports infrastructure, double-line railway connectivity, introduction of Vande Bharat train services, employment generation in the technology sector, promotion of tourism, and matters related to the state Finance Department.

The Chief Minister also urged Prime Minister Modi to allocate more houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), increase the number of Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS), enhance the number of ration cards under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana for the Reang tribal community, and increase the allocation of natural gas for various developmental projects in the state.

In addition to developmental issues, Chief Minister Saha also held detailed discussions on several important organisational matters and broader aspects concerning the state’s progress, the CMO official added.

The official said: “In particular, fruitful discussions were held with the Prime Minister on strategies to further strengthen the organisation at the grassroots level, especially economic development, ensuring good governance, and strengthening the organisation.”

According to an official statement quoting the Chief Minister Saha expressed confidence that under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, the pace of Tripura’s overall development and public welfare initiatives would gain further momentum through coordinated efforts between the Centre and the state government.

Later, the Chief Minister said that flagship initiatives such as Digital India, Swachh Bharat Mission, Ayushman Bharat, and the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana have significantly improved the lives of millions of people across the country and played a crucial role in building an Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Chief Minister Saha also added that under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, India has witnessed remarkable progress in infrastructure development, while the country’s global stature has become stronger than ever before.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister and the Prime Minister also discussed various other important issues related to the development and welfare of Tripura in detail, the statement added.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Saha congratulated Prime Minister Modi on completing 12 remarkable years of dedicated service to the nation.

The Chief Minister also congratulated the Prime Minister for the Bharatiya Janata Party’s “historic and resounding victory” in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections.

Companies not complying with Menstrual Leave Policy will face action: Karnataka Labour Minister

Bengaluru, Oct 11 (IANS) Karnataka Labour Minister Santosh Lad on Saturday said that the companies, not complying with the state’s menustral leave policy, rules for which are being framed, will face action.

Speaking to the media at his residence in Bengaluru, the minister said: “The government’s law must be implemented and followed by everyone. Companies should not look at this only as a law but also from a humanitarian perspective. Further discussions and consultations will be held on the implementation of this policy in the coming days.”

When asked whether companies might hesitate to hire women employees because of the menstrual leave policy, the minister responded: “Let us implement it first and then evaluate its pros and cons. In fact, many companies are already following such a policy.”

He added that a bill regarding the menstrual leave policy will be introduced in the Legislative Assembly, or it could be enforced through an ordinance.

“Companies should have the sensitivity and common sense to understand that women employees need menstrual leave. They must recognise the challenges faced by women employees. If complaints arise that excessive leave is being misused, we will review and address them accordingly,” he underlined.

Highlighting women’s role in society and families, the minister said: “Women not only work at home but also outside. They face mental stress and middle-class working women, in particular, face many challenges. In wealthy households, women often have domestic help. If working women get even a day’s leave, they can return the next day and perform even more efficiently.”

Speaking on behalf of the committee that studied the menstrual leave policy, the Associate Dean of Christ University said: “We conducted a thorough study before recommending the menstrual leave policy. All standards and aspects were carefully considered before making our recommendations.”

The Congress-led government in Karnataka on Thursday has approved a proposal to grant women staffers one day paid menstrual leave every month.

Speaking to the media at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru after the cabinet meeting, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs H.K. Patil announced the decision.

BJP and Shiv Sena hit out at Uddhav Thackeray, spare Raj Thackeray

Mumbai, July 5 (IANS) Maharashtra BJP’s former president and Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Saturday criticised Shiv Sena UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray, saying that it is clear from his speech that his real agenda is not ‘M’ for ‘Marathi,’ but ‘M’ for ‘Municipal Corporation’.

“His love for Marathi is nothing but a political stunt that surfaces when elections are near. The public has now recognised this hypocrisy,” he remarked in his reaction after Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray attended a joint rally to celebrate the state government’s move to withdraw two government resolutions on the introduction of Hindi along with Marathi and English.

Incidentally, Bawankule did not target Raj Thackeray in his criticism.

He said that under the guise of Marathi pride, Uddhav Thackeray sang a lament in Worli about the loss of power.

“Why did he accept the report mandating Hindi from the first grade in 2022 while he was Chief Minister? He never answered it,” he said.

Bawankule said that the Marathi language is not just an identity that stands on emotions, but it must be reflected in policies.

“When you (Uddhav Thackeray) were in power in Mumbai, you sidelined the Marathi people. Now, to regain power, you are showing fake love for Marathi again,” he claimed.

He alleged that it is clear from Uddhav Thackeray’s speech that his real agenda is not ‘M’ for ‘Marathi,’ but ‘M’ for ‘Municipal Corporation’,

Further, the Mumbai BJP president and Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar claimed that the handshake between Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray is nothing but an attempt to win the family “battle” because they fear losing the election.

In his post on X, Shelar claimed: “This is not for the language but a public appeal for the elections! With the municipal elections approaching, the panicked Uddhav Sena, scared of the BJP, now remembers family ties. The program in Worli today was a family bonding event to publicly appeal to the brother they had thrown out of the house. There was no love for the language or anything like that… and it doesn’t even matter to them! This is a desperate struggle to gain power in the municipality and to loot Mumbai again for the sake of power.”

On the other hand, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena also only targeted Uddhav Thackeray, terming him a detractor and a hollow figurehead while showering praise on Raj Thackeray, terming him wise and a champion of Marathi.

In a post on X, Shiv Sena made a comparison between the leadership of Uddhav and Raj Thackeray.

“One enlightened, the other provocative. One right, the other left. One younger yet grand, the other grand yet younger. One a lover of Marathi, the other a lover of power. One wields a whip in words, the other harbours vengeance in speech. One a champion of Marathi, the other a detractor. One wise, the other foolish. One carries the legacy of Marathi, and the other fills their pockets. One stands tall with independent pride, the other just a hollow figurehead.”

SC issues notice to Gujarat over denial of stipend to foreign medical graduates

New Delhi, Nov 28 (IANS) The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice on a writ petition alleging that Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) in Gujarat are being denied the mandatory stipend during their Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) as required under the National Medical Commission (NMC) Regulations, 2021.

A Bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and Prasanna B. Varale sought responses from the National Medical Commission, the Gujarat Medical Council, the Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS), and the State of Gujarat.

The Justice Kumar-led Bench directed that the petition be tagged with a pending batch of similar matters concerning non-payment of stipend to FMGs across various States.

The petition, filed by the All India Parents Association, Belarus Medical Students through advocate Tanvi Dubey, claimed that Clause 3 of Schedule IV of the NMC (Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship) Regulations, 2021, mandates the payment of a stipend to all interns, including FMGs, as fixed by the competent authority in each State.

Despite this, the plea stated, FMGs interning in government and GMERS-affiliated medical colleges in Gujarat have been receiving no stipend at all. The petition referred to multiple NMC circulars mandating that FMGs be paid a stipend on par with IMGs (Indian Medical Graduates).

It further noted that West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and several other States have already implemented stipend parity in compliance with these directions. According to the petition, FMGs in Gujarat are required to sign undertakings declaring that they will not claim a stipend under the threat of being denied admission to the internship.

“Threatening them (FMGs) with deprivation of internship admission in case of refusal, which is coercive, arbitrary, and violative of fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution,” the plea stated. It also relied on a series of Supreme Court decisions affirming that FMGs are entitled to the same stipend as IMGs during their CRMI and issued notices or directions to that effect.

The petitioners have sought directions to ensure immediate monthly stipend to all FMGs interning in Gujarat’s state and GMERS institutions, with retrospective effect and interest on arrears. They have also prayed for a uniform stipend determination mechanism consistent with the NMC Regulations and practices followed in other States.
