Two die of electrocution at sweet shop in Bihar’s Bhojpur

Patna, Aug 5 (IANS) Two people, including a sweet shop owner, lost their lives after suffering an electric shock at a shop in the Chandi police station area of Bhojpur district on Wednesday morning, officials said.

The incident took place at a sweet shop near Chandi Chowk.

According to preliminary information, an electrical wiring fault caused live current to pass through an iron pipe at the shop. The shop owner and a worker reportedly came into contact with the pipe and suffered severe electric shocks.

The deceased have been identified as 55-year-old Mahendra Sao and 27-year-old Sanjay Kumar, both residents of Chandi village. Mahendra Sao owned and operated the sweet shop at Chandi Chowk, while Sanjay Kumar worked there as a labourer.

According to an official, an insulation fault in the shop’s electrical wiring caused an exposed wire to come into contact with an iron pipe, energising the pipe. When Mahendra Sao and Sanjay Kumar touched it, they received a severe electric shock and collapsed unconscious.

The incident triggered panic among people present near the shop. Local residents immediately rushed both victims to Ara Sadar Hospital for treatment. However, their condition deteriorated on the way, and both lost their lives before reaching the hospital.

Doctors at Sadar Hospital examined the two men and declared them dead on arrival.

Following the news, their relatives reached the hospital, where an atmosphere of grief prevailed. Police were informed about the incident and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Preliminary findings revealed that an electrical leakage or wiring fault may have caused the current to flow through the iron pipe. Chandi Station House Officer Rakesh Roshan confirmed that two people had lost their lives due to electrocution.

Police are investigating the incident from all angles to determine the exact cause of the electrical fault and the circumstances that led to the tragedy.

The district police started the process of postmortem of the deceased.

Patna, May 22 (IANS) The Bihar government on Friday carried out another major administrative reshuffle involving several senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers, officials said.

The notification issued by the General Administration Department under the leadership of Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, announced new appointments, transfers, and additional responsibilities across multiple departments.

Under the new postings, 1992-batch IAS officer Deepak Kumar Singh has been appointed as Principal Secretary to the Governor.

Gopal Meena has been posted as Secretary to the Governor.

Senior IAS officer B. Rajendra has been given charge as Additional Chief Secretary of the Monitoring Department, while Kundan Kumar has been appointed Secretary in the Home Department.

According to the notification, Sanjay Kumar Singh has been relieved from his responsibilities in the General Administration Department.

Seema Tripathi has been assigned additional charge as Secretary of the Revenue and Land Reforms Department.

Further appointments include Nilesh Ramchandra Deore as Managing Director of the Bihar State Housing Board and Inayat Khan as Special Secretary in the Revenue and Land Reforms Department.

The reshuffle also includes the appointment of Arvind Kumar Verma as Special Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat Department, while Rajiv Kumar Srivastava has been posted as Additional Secretary in the Finance Department.

The latest round of transfers is being seen as part of the Bihar government’s broader administrative restructuring aimed at improving departmental coordination, strengthening governance, and accelerating policy implementation.

The reshuffle has sparked significant discussion within both political and bureaucratic circles in the state.

Earlier, on May 15, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary had carried out a significant administrative reshuffle, transferring 18 IAS officers and reassigning key responsibilities across departments.

The move is being seen as an effort to further strengthen governance and streamline administrative functioning in the state.

Among the most important reshuffles, 1996-batch IAS officer K. Senthil Kumar has been shifted from the Sugarcane Industry Department and appointed as Additional Chief Secretary of the Labour Resources and Migrant Workers Welfare Department.

Theft accused dies in police custody in J&K’s Ramban, magisterial probe ordered

Jammu, Feb 19 (IANS) Authorities on Wednesday ordered a magisterial probe into the death of a theft accused in police custody in J&K’s Ramban district.

An order issued by the district magistrate (DM) Ramban said, “Sh. Rizwan Asgar, JKAS, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Banihal is hereby appointed as an inquiry Officer to conduct the discrete inquiry into the matter leading to the death of one Sh. Mohd Abid, Son of Mohd Aslam, Resident of Thopal Tehsil Batote District, Ramban on 18.02.2025 at CHC Batote. “

The inquiry officer shall look into the cause and circumstances that led to the death of the above-named individual and shall fix the responsibility for the same. He shall submit his report within a week’s time positively from the date of issue of this order”.

Wednesday’s custodial death has come in the wake of two controversial deaths in J&K in which the attitude and response of police and the army had come into question.

On February 4, a civilian truck driver, Waseem Ahmad was killed in firing by the Army at Sangrama in the Sopore area. Army said the truck driver had been signalled to stop at a check post set up by the army following intelligence inputs about the movement of terrorists in the area. Waseem’s family refuted the army’s statement alleging that he had been killed in cold blood.

On February 6, 25-year-old Makhan Din, who belonged to the Gujjar community, committed suicide by consuming insecticides after alleged police torture in the Billawar area of J&K’s border district of Kathua. Makhan recorded a video before his death, stating he had no militant links and was brutally tortured by the police. In the purported 3.48-minute video, which was shot in a mosque, Makhan Din swears by the Almighty and Prophet that he has never seen militants.

“I was beaten by the policemen at the police station. They were asking me to tell the truth. I told them the truth that I had never seen the militants. I had to make a fake story because I was beaten ruthlessly by the cops in the police station,” said Makhan Din, a suspected Over Ground Worker (OGW) in the video, which went viral.

“When I made the concocted story and told them that I had seen militants and Swaru (his uncle who has been exfiltrated to Pakistan) and I had not told my family members, they stopped beating me. They let me go in the morning to bring my mobile phone to the police station,” he said.

Hatred between communities led to violence in Murshidabad: Farooq Abdullah

Jammu, April 20 (IANS) National Conference President and former J&K Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah blamed the “division” and “hatred” between communities that led to the violence in West Bengal’s Murshidabad.

“Violence only erupted as efforts were made to create division and hatred between Hindus and Muslims. Bulldozers were deployed, leading to the demolition of mosques, schools, and homes belonging to Muslims. What was their fault? Was anything proven against them? No. Despite the SC’s ban on bulldozers, they (authorities) proceeded with it. Isn’t the law equal for everyone?” Abdullah said, in a veiled attack on the BJP government, at a function here.

On BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s controversial remarks questioning the judiciary’s role in legislative matters, the senior Abdullah said that there are four pillars which keep a democracy alive.

“Their (BJP) MP should not have made remarks against the judiciary,” he said.

Earlier, Dubey said that if courts assume the task of lawmaking, the existence of Parliament becomes redundant.

On the Ramban disaster, Abdullah said that the J&K government has appealed to the Centre for help.

“The Chief Minister is visiting the areas today. We have also asked the Centre to help us mitigate this disaster,” he said.

Reacting to water and electricity scarcity in Jammu, the senior Abdullah slammed the L-G Manoj Sinha.

“He (L-G) gave one power plant to Rajasthan and another to Uttar Pradesh. Why do you people in Jammu remain silent? When the Darbar Move was taken from you, you remained silent at that time, too. Where are the projects which I signed?” he said.

On former R&AW chief A.S. Dulat’s remarks in his new book on the Abdullahs’ role when the Narendra Modi government moved to strike down Article 370 in 2019, the former Chief Minister said he has no comments to make about him.
