Visakhapatnam steel plant tragedy: Govt assures jobs for kin, education for children of deceased

Srikakulam (Andhra Pradesh), June 9 (IANS) Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu said on Tuesday that the Central government has assured permanent jobs for the family members of those who lost their lives in the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant accident and also education for the children of the deceased. He also said that residences will be provided to the bereaved families within the steel plant premises.

The accident occurred when a large quantity of molten steel leaked following the explosion of the ladle carrying steel at a very high temperature.

According to officials, molten iron was extremely hot at about 1,500 degrees Celsius.

Speaking to reporters, Rammohan Naidu said: “What has happened in Vizag Steel Plant yesterday was very unfortunate. Following the incident, I, along with Union Steel Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy and others, tried to inspect the site.”

However, the Civil Aviation Minister noted that it was very difficult to assess the site because it is the first time that this kind of tragedy has occurred in a steel plant in the country.

Rammohan Naidu said that an investigation committee has been appointed by the Ministry of Steel to assess the situation and reason behind such an incident.

Paying condolence to the victims and expressing his concern for the bereaved families, the Civil Aviation Minister said: “The Union Steel Minister (HD Kumaraswamy) has announced 25 lakh compensation for families of all the deceased. Proper treatment is being ensured for all those injured in the incident.”

“Along with the compensation, the Union government has also proposed permanent employment in the steel plant itself for the family members of those who have lost their lives. Their children’s education will also be taken care of by the steel plant. They will also be provided residence within the premises of the steel plant,” he added.

“It is a very difficult situation but we are trying to do our best to take care of the bereaved families,” Union Minister Rammohan Naidu stressed.

He also said that since the situation comes under the purview of the Centre’s Ministry of Steel, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has spoken to Union Minister Kumaraswamy.

“He (Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu) has requested for a thorough investigation into the incident and maximum help for the families of the deceased. Support will definitely be provided from the state government also,” the Civil Aviation Minister added.

Rammohan Naidu also said that the Union government has undertaken a commitment to prioritise the safety of workers at the Visakhapatnam steel plant.

I was a victim of chit fund scam twice: Odisha CM

Bhubaneswar, Dec 24 (IANS) Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said on Tuesday that he had also fallen victim to chit-fund scams twice in 1990 and 2002.

Addressing a gathering at the state-level programme on the occasion of National Consumer Rights Day, CM Majhi said, “I also fell victim to chit fund scam twice. I got cheated by two financial agencies, including a government one, in 1990 and 2002.”

He also noted that he lost all his investment as he later came to know the firm was fake.

CM Majhi also added that he appealed to the then government-but failed to get back his money due to the complex and lengthy process.

Lakhs of investors in Odisha had lost all their savings in connection with the Chit Fund scam.

The Chief Minister in his speech asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government after discussions with all the stakeholders brought a new Consumer Protection Act, 2019, that closed all the loopholes in the previous Consumer Protection Act, 1986.

He added that India is an ‘over legislated country but lesser implemented nation’.

He noted that the consumers often failed to get justice due to the lengthy and complex legal process.

He emphasised the implementation of laws in the letter and spirit to ensure the consumers get justice without much hassle.

The Chief Minister highlighted various benefits of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, in comparison to the previous act.

CM Majhi also drew attention towards the rising cases of cybercrime in the state.

He added that the state government is taking all the steps to spread awareness among consumers about their rights.

The Chief Minister advised the state Consumer Welfare Department to intensify the enforcement activities against traders engaged in fraudulent acts.

While speaking to media persons, the state Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department Minister Krushna Chandra Patra alleged that several departments stopped functioning properly during the last 24 years of the previous Biju Janata Dal’s government.

The department is reeling under severe staff crunch. The traders engaged in illegal activities have no fear of the department, Patra said.

He assured that sufficient staff will be provided and consumer forums at different levels will be revamped soon

Patra also said that the showcause notice has been issued to 371 petrol pumps that were found involved in cheating.

National Consumer Rights Day is observed every year on December 24 to commemorate the enactment of the Consumer Protection Act, 1986.

This year Consumer Day is being celebrated with the theme, “Virtual Hearings & Digital Access to Consumer Justice”.

The theme highlights the new provisions under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, which is aimed at providing speedy, cost-effective and hassle-free justice to consumers through online mode.

The amended act highlights the importance of digital media and tools in ensuring that consumers can access justice in an increasingly online world.

Right time for making ships together to meet global demand: Puri tells S. Korean firms

New Delhi, Nov 15 (IANS) Korean shipping companies have the knowledge and capacity and India has the demand, the skilled manpower and the right policies to turn this into a winning partnership aligned with the ‘Make in India’ initiative, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Saturday.

Puri, during his Seoul visit, met several South Korean companies, exploring strategic India-Korea collaboration, especially in the field of shipbuilding.

“Visited the sprawling shipbuilding facility of Hanwha Ocean in South Korea’s Geoje. With robust growth across sectors, the Indian economy, which is among the fastest growing economies in the world, along with our energy sector offer massive partnership and investment opportunities in our journey towards being Viksit Bharat under PM Modi,” Puri posted on X.

“Our energy PSUs spend about $5-8 billion for energy freight annually and already have a requirement of about 59 vessels to begin with. There is a huge opportunity for global majors like Hanwha Ocean to collaborate and build these vessels in India,” said the minister.

He further stated that this is the right time and it is a very compelling case for “our cooperation for making ships for meeting global demand”.

“We will not only recover the costs of our vessels in 5 years, but will also establish India as a global maritime shipping hub,” said Puri.

India has introduced robust support measures to accelerate shipbuilding activities, like 15–25 per cent capital support for vessels built in India; 5 per cent additional incentive for ship recycling; Marine Development Fund for equity financing; 3 per cent interest subvention and infrastructure support for greenfield shipyards and clusters.

The minister focused on boosting LNG and crude carrier shipbuilding to meet India’s growing energy demands and build a self-reliant maritime future.

Puri earlier visited the state-of-the-art shipyard of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan.

The sprawling facility, spread across 1,680 acres is the world’s largest shipyard engaged in ship construction, offshore plant, and engine and machinery sectors.

“With 20 per cent of vessels either coming or going to India in the next 15 years, this will be a golden opportunity for Korean ship manufacturers to partner with us and ‘Make in India for the World’,” said the minister.

Trinamool to send Yusuf Pathan, Lalitesh Tripathi to Congress’ Voter Adhikar Yatra in Bihar

Kolkata, Aug 30 (IANS) The Trinamool Congress has decided to send its Lok Sabha MP and former cricketer Yusuf Pathan, along with senior leader Lalitesh Tripathi, to participate in the Congress-led Voter Adhikar Yatra in Bihar on September 1.

Party sources said TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee and the party’s Lok Sabha leader Abhishek Banerjee will not be able to attend due to pre-scheduled programmes.

“The party has decided that Yusuf Pathan and Lalitesh Tripathi will represent Trinamool Congress at the September 1 rally,” a senior TMC leader said.

A special session of the West Bengal Assembly is set to begin the same day, where the Chief Minister is expected to be present, while Abhishek Banerjee too has another engagement, party sources said.

Today, Samajwadi Party president and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav joined the “Voter Adhikar Yatra” in Saran district of Bihar. Rohini Acharya, the daughter of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad, was also present there.

The Congress party took to social media to announce the participation of Akhilesh Yadav in the Voter Adhikar Yatra.

The yatra is witnessing significant turnout from supporters of the Mahagathbandhan, with all major Opposition leaders jointly addressing the crowd.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had launched the Voter Adhikar Yatra on August 17 to protest against the alleged large-scale deletion of names from Bihar’s electoral rolls. The yatra will culminate in Patna on Monday.

Sources said Trinamool’s participation underlines the opposition INDIA bloc’s unity against the BJP-led government at the Centre.

Opposition parties have alleged that nearly 65 lakh names were deleted from Bihar’s draft electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, calling it a direct assault on people’s right to vote.

Following a Supreme Court order, the Election Commission was directed to publish the deleted names by August 19 and file a compliance report by August 22.
