Will always be remembered for dedication to public service: PM Modi on Ram Vilas Paswan’s birth anniversary

New Delhi, July 5 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to former Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on his birth anniversary on Sunday, recalling his contributions to the upliftment of weaker and deprived sections of society.

Ram Vilas Paswan, born on July 5, 1946, in Bihar’s Khagaria, was the founder of the Lok Janshakti Party and served as a member of both Houses — nine times in Lok Sabha and twice in Rajya Sabha.

He served as the Cabinet Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution in the first two terms of the Modi government.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “On the birth anniversary of former Union Minister Shri Ram Vilas Paswan ji, my heartfelt tribute to him. He made significant contributions to the upliftment of society’s deprived and weaker sections. He will always be remembered for his dedication to public service and national service.”

Expressing gratitude to the Prime Minister, Ram Vilas Paswan’s son and Union Minister Chirag Paswan said, “On the birth anniversary of the founder of the party, my leader, my father, the revered Padma Bhushan Shri Ram Vilas Paswan ji, heartfelt thanks to you for paying homage to him, Honourable Prime Minister ji.”

“Your respectful words are an inspiration to all of us. The ideals of social justice, service, and equality of the revered Shri Ram Vilas Paswan ji will forever continue to guide us,” the LJP (RV) chief added.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, taking to X, said, “Shri Ram Vilas Paswan ji’s entire life was dedicated to the welfare of the poor. During the Emergency, he waged a long struggle to protect democratic values and civil rights, enduring numerous tortures. His contributions to democracy and nation-building will forever remain a source of inspiration. On the birth anniversary of Shri Ram Vilas Paswan ji, I offer millions of salutations to him.”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid homage to Ram Vilas Paswan on his birth anniversary, and said, “His entire public life was dedicated to social justice, democratic values, and the struggle for the rights of Dalits, backward classes, and the deprived. Shri Ram Vilas Paswan ji always placed human sensitivities above all and made continuous efforts to ensure that, in the policy-making process as well, the person standing in the last row of society also receives justice, opportunity, and respect. I bow to his memory.”

Meanwhile, the birth anniversary of the late Ram Vilas Paswan, founder of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) and former Union Minister, will be celebrated with great reverence and enthusiasm on Sunday across Bihar.

A grand ceremony will be held at the party’s state office in Patna to mark the occasion. This will be attended by party office-bearers and workers from various districts of Bihar.

Speaking to the media, Utsav Seth, the Youth District Working President of LJP (RV), stated that 35 to 40 workers from the party’s youth wing in Gaya district would travel to Patna to participate in the event.

He further mentioned that banners and posters have been put up at various locations across Gaya city to mark the birth anniversary, and party workers will organise tribute programs to pay their respects to the late Ram Vilas Paswan.

Odisha: BJD warns suspended MLAs of disqualification for defying whip​

Bhubaneswar, March 15 (IANS) On the eve of the Rajya Sabha election polling, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) directed two suspended legislators to comply with the party whip and vote in favour of its authorised candidate.​

Chief Whip (Opposition) Pramila Mallik issued separate letters to Sanatan Mahakud (Champua MLA) and Arvind Mohapatra (Patkura MLA), reminding them that despite their suspension for alleged anti‑party activities, they remain constitutionally bound to follow the party’s directions as they were elected on the BJD symbol.​

Mallik noted in the letters that the regional party, through a whip, has instructed its members to vote in favour of the party’s authorised candidate in the forthcoming Rajya Sabha election.​

The party further clarified that both suspended leaders are therefore required to strictly comply with the party whip and cast their votes accordingly. It also warned that any deviation from the whip or abstention without prior permission could invite disqualification under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, which treats such conduct as voluntarily giving up party membership.​

Mallik stated, “Any act of voting contrary to the party whip, or abstaining from voting without prior permission of the party, may attract the provisions of the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution of India, including disqualification on the ground that the member has voluntarily given up the membership of the political party.”​

She also cited the precedent of Sharad Yadav’s disqualification by the then Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, which was later upheld by the Supreme Court, underscoring the seriousness of non‑compliance.​

The communication further noted that the leadership would take adherence to the party whip into account while reviewing the suspension of the two MLAs.​

Mallik added, “The party expects that you will honour the mandate on which you were elected and comply with the party whip. Compliance with the party direction will also be taken into consideration by the party leadership while reviewing the matter relating to your suspension.”​

With the Rajya Sabha polls scheduled for March 16, the BJD’s move signals its intent to consolidate votes and ensure discipline within its ranks, even among suspended members.​

Both Sanatan Mahakud and Arvind Mohapatra were suspended from the BJD in January this year over their alleged involvement in anti‑party activities.​

K’taka BJP celebrates GST reforms with bursting of firecrackers, distribution of sweets

Bengaluru, Sep 22 (IANS) Karnataka BJP celebrated GST reforms and implementation of the simplified GST 2.0 system by the NDA government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with bursting of firecrackers and distribution of sweets in Bengaluru and other parts of the state on Monday.

Party leaders and supporters welcomed the development with celebrations at the BJP state office, Jagannath Bhavan in Bengaluru, where firecrackers were burst and sweets were distributed.

Slogans were raised hailing PM Modi for simplifying GST and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Later, sweets were distributed at shops in Malleswaram.

Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, Opposition Chief Whip in the Council N. Ravikumar, former Union Minister A. Narayanaswamy, BJP State Vice President N. Mahesh, Bengaluru North District President S. Harish, former National General Secretary of SC Morcha Chi. Na. Ramu, State Spokespersons M.G. Mahesh and H. Venkatesh Dodderi, Mohan Vishwa, State Media Convenor Karunakar Khasale, Co-Convenor Prashanth Kedenji, and several party workers were present.

BJP State President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra celebrated the implementation of the simplified GST 2.0 system by the NDA government, distributing sweets at shops and markets in Shivamogga on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that the introduction of the two-slab GST system was like a Diwali gift to the people. “For this, the BJP conveys its congratulations to PM Modi and Finance Minister Sitharaman,” he said and added that the celebrations were held to express gratitude to the Union government on behalf of the people.

Vijayendra said that while US President Trump had increased tariffs on several countries, at a time when major challenges were posed to India, PM Modi sent out a clear message that India will neither yield nor bow to anyone.

He criticised the Congress party, stating that it won many elections with the slogan of ‘Garibi Hatao (Eradicate Poverty)’ but failed to eradicate poverty in the country. He stressed that India must now move towards self-reliance and transform into a prosperous nation, giving greater emphasis to indigenous products.

He further said that all matters must be approached with comprehensive planning to face global challenges, and that India must aim to transform into a developed nation by 2047.

Legislative Council members D.S. Arun and Dr. Dhananjay Sarji, Shivamogga District President N.K. Jagadish, City Mandal President Mohan Reddy, and several party workers were present.

Delhi Speaker refers Kejriwal’s ‘misleading’ dog count remark to House panel

New Delhi, Jan 6 (IANS) Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Tuesday referred to a House panel a complaint related to allegedly misleading statements by AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, that government schoolteachers in Delhi have been instructed to conduct a count of stray dogs.

On receiving a complaint from BJP legislator from Ghonda, Ajay Kumar Mahawar, the Speaker said, “Taking cognisance of the matter, I am referring the entire issue to the Department Related Standing Committee on Education for detailed examination. The said Committee shall examine the matter and submit its report to the House at the earliest.”

In a statement issued by Delhi Assembly Secretariat, the Speaker said, “I have received a complaint from Ajay Mahawar, wherein he has stated that the Convener of the Aam Aadmi Party, Arvind Kejriwal, former Chief Minister, Sanjeev Jha, MLA, and other leaders are, through newspaper media, making allegations against the Delhi Government that government school teachers in Delhi have been instructed to conduct a count of stray dogs.”

“Whereas, the Delhi Government has repeatedly denied that any such order has been issued by it,” said the Speaker, adding that he is referring the entire issue to the Standing Committee on Education for detailed examination.

Earlier, BJP legislators staged a protest outside the Delhi Assembly demanding a public apology from Kejriwal for distorting facts and undermining public trust.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police have registered an FIR following a complaint from the Directorate of Education. The case pertains to the circulation of false and misleading claims on social media suggesting that Delhi government schoolteachers were being assigned duties related to counting stray dogs.

Earlier, addressing a press conference, Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood criticised Kejriwal for what he described as misleading remarks, accusing the former CM of spreading “incorrect information”.

The minister demanded a public apology from Kejriwal, stating that such claims “distort facts” and “undermine” public trust.
