Kolkata, Oct 14 (IANS) Trinamool Congress’ Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha member, Abhishek Banerjee, on Wednesday faced a marathon questioning for around six hours at the Shakespeare Sarani Police Station in Kolkata in connection with the August 27 scuffle involving party workers, police personnel and Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) officials at his Camac Street office.
After coming out from the police station on Wednesday evening, the Trinamool Lok Sabha MP said that, if necessary, he will go up to the level of the Supreme Court regarding the matter and fight the case legally.
“What happened on August 27 was on Facebook Live. Mere allegations do not mean anything. Now “I will file a complaint, and an investigation will be conducted based on that complaint. An investigation is going on and the police summoned me for interrogation. I have answered all the questions they have asked. The rest of the legal battle will be on. I will go to the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court in the matter,” said Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Speaking on the occasion, he also strongly condemned the alleged attack on Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday evening by a woman who claimed herself as a niece of the former West Bengal Chief Minister.
“The incident was very unfortunate. After all she is the former Chief Minister of the state and more importantly a woman. The way the incident happened yesterday was most unfortunate. I was present at my Kalighat office when this incident happened. The manner in which she tried to attack the former Chief Minister with a knife was most unfortunate considering that Mamata Banerjee is supposed to be entitled for “Z Plus” security. If the former Chief Minister had to confront such an attack, the safety of the common people in the state is well imaginable,” Abhishek Banerjee said.
Tension erupted on August 27 when KMC officials, accompanied by police personnel, reached Abhishek Banerjee’s Camac Street office to remove a billboard.
The Kolkata civic officials and police personnel allegedly encountered resistance from Trinamool Congress workers led by party MP Abhishek Banerjee and other party leaders, resulting in scuffles at the site.
According to the three first information reports (FIRs) registered at Shakespeare Sarani Police Station, the police have accused Trinamool Congress activists of assaulting personnel on duty and attempting to outrage the modesty of a woman police officer.
Abhishek Banerjee, Rajya Sabha member and senior Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien, and other party leaders, including Humayun Kabir and Baishwanar Chatterjee, have been named in two of the three FIRs registered in connection with the incident.
The police have arrested 14 people so far in connection with the August 27 clashes.
