Women from diverse sections tie rakhis to Gujarat CM Patel at Lok Bhavan

Gandhinagar, Aug 27 (IANS) Women from different communities and sections of society tied rakhis to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel at Lok Bhavan in Gandhinagar on Thursday, marking Raksha Bandhan with a gathering that brought together representatives of social and charitable organisations from across the state.

Women associated with social organisations, charitable institutions, the Brahma Kumaris and organisations working for persons with disabilities participated in the celebrations. They tied rakhis to Patel and offered prayers for his good health and long life.

Patel welcomed the women who had gathered for the occasion and accepted their blessings and good wishes.

The event focussed on the traditional bond represented by Raksha Bandhan, while also highlighting the participation of women from different sections of society.

The Chief Minister reaffirmed his commitment to the holistic development and safety of women across Gujarat, according to the statement issued after the programme.

The gathering was attended by Minister of State for Education, Rivaba Jadeja; Gandhinagar Mayor Miraben Patel; and MLAs Ritaben Patel, Nimishaben Suthar and Payalben Kukrani.

BJP national vice-president Varshaben Doshi and state BJP Mahila Morcha president Anjuben Vekariya were also present, along with representatives from various fields and senior government officials.

The participation of women from different organisations and communities marked the occasion at Lok Bhavan, with the traditional exchange of rakhis and blessings forming the central part of the programme.

Raksha Bandhan is traditionally observed as a celebration of the bond between brothers and sisters, with sisters tying a rakhi around their brothers’ wrists as a symbol of affection and protection.

This year’s celebrations in Gujarat came as women from different parts of the state gathered at the venue in Gandhinagar to mark the festival.

Lakshadweep to get seaplane connectivity soon, says Aviation minister at GIFT City summit in Gandhinagar

Gandhinagar, May 8 (IANS) Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu said on Friday that seaplane operations will soon begin in Lakshadweep as part of India’s broader strategy to enhance regional air connectivity and diversify aviation infrastructure.

Addressing the gathering at ‘India Aircraft Leasing and Financing Summit 2.0’ in GIFT City, the Union Minister added: “India’s aviation expansion is no longer limited to traditional aircraft operations but is extending to helicopters, regional aircraft and seaplanes to improve connectivity in remote and geographically challenging regions.”

He said Lakshadweep will be among the first locations to implement seaplane services, strengthening access to island territories.

“The government is also promoting leasing frameworks for smaller aircraft categories, including 40 to 100-seater planes, to support regional connectivity,” he added.

The Union Minister added that new policy approaches such as fractional ownership models and treating aircraft as infrastructure assets are being actively developed to broaden investment participation in the aviation sector.

“These initiatives are designed to ensure balanced growth across regions while improving last-mile connectivity. Strengthening such connectivity models will be essential for India’s long-term aviation expansion strategy,” he noted.

International Financial Services Centres Authority Chairman, K. Rajaraman, said that GIFT City has rapidly evolved into a global aviation finance hub under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“While there were no leasing units in 2020, today more than 40 aircraft lessors are operational in GIFT City,” he added.

He said that leasing transactions involving more than 200 aircraft and 84 engines have already been successfully completed, reflecting strong sectoral growth.

Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) Civil Aviation Committee Chairman and Airbus India Managing Director, Jurgen Westermeier, said: “India’s aviation financing ecosystem is gaining global recognition and GIFT City is emerging as a key centre for investment and policy innovation in the sector.”

Earlier, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said that the state’s infrastructure development, including GIFT City’s connectivity and financial systems, is enabling new aviation opportunities.

“The integration of global expertise and domestic policy support will strengthen India’s aviation future,” he added.

He said that initiatives such as seaplane operations and aviation financing reforms will support India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047.

Withdrawn Trinamool-era orders for supernumerary teachers, Bengal govt tells Calcutta HC

Kolkata, Aug 19 (IANS) The West Bengal government on Wednesday told Calcutta High Court about the decision on two controversial notifications issued by the previous Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government regarding creation of 1,600 supernumerary posts for upper-primary teachers in state-run schools.

The state government had also clarified that the withdrawal of the two notifications in the matter would mean that the new state government will not go-ahead with such numerary post recruitments, which created controversies during the previous state government’s tenure and also was questioned by the Calcutta High Court earlier.

The previous Mamata Banerjee-led Cabinet created 1,600 supernumerary vacancies in the upper primary section for physical education and vocational education teachers from the waiting list.

The-then State Cabinet took this decision to reduce recruitment complications.

The matter was notified through two notifications first on May 19, 2022, and the second on October 14, 2022.

However, the Calcutta High Court’s the-then single-judge bench of Justice Biswajit Basu (now retired) dismissed the state’s decision.

The court said that supernumerary posts could not be created like regular recruitment and they could be done only in special circumstances.

The previous State Cabinet, thereafter, approached a division bench of the Calcutta High Court challenging the decision of the single-judge bench.

The case was sscheduled to be heard on Wednesday by a division bench led by Justice Rajasekhar Manthar.

However, the state government told the court about its decision to withdraw the two controversial notifications regarding the supernumerary posts recruitments.

The previous Trinamool Congress-led state government’s decision for creation of supernumerary posts also attracted strong criticism from the former judge of the Calcutta High Court, Abhijit Ganguly Gangopadhyay, who is currently the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha member from Tamluk constituency in East Midnapore district.

Gangopadhyay, whose court judgments had earlier opened the way from probe by the central probe agencies like Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), to initiate probe in the multi-crore cash-for-school jobs scam in West Bengal during the previous Trinamool Congress government, had said at one point in time that the decision to create supernumerary posts was enough for the Election Commission of India (ECI) to cancel the election symbol of Trinamool Congress.

Delhi Assembly discusses CAG report on AAP’s excise policy

New Delhi, Feb 27 (IANS) A discussion on the Comptroller and Auditor General’s (CAG) damning report on the previous AAP government’s excise policy began on Thursday in Delhi Assembly, with BJP MLAs hitting out at favouritism in the issue of liquor licences, opening of vends in residential areas and absence of lab test of liquor before sale in the city.

The third sitting of the House, whose session began on February 25, started with only Amanatullah Khan of the AAP representing the Opposition in the House, while the other 21 legislators staged a protest outside the premises of the Assembly due to a suspension slapped on them by Speaker Vijender Gupta till Monday.

Before the discussion on the excise policy, Malviya Nagar MLA Satish Upadhyay raised the issue of desecration of a statute of Shaheed Bhagat Singh in a park in the south Delhi colony.

“The AAP Malviya Nagar MLA did not attend to the broken arm and leg of the statute over the past three years,” he said, adding that he has now covered the statute and directed officials to repair the statue or install a new statue within a month.

He said the AAP leader’s respect for Shaheed Bhagat Singh is unreal. “If they were committed to respecting the national hero, they should have repaired the statue and walked the talk,” he said.

The poor state of the statue in Malviya Nagar park exposes the “double standards” of the AAP, which raised slogans in the House but “failed” to give due respect to the statue, said Upadhyay, adding that a similar statue in Mehrauli had also been damaged.

Later, taking part in Special Mention (Rule 280), Upadhyay raised the issue of the absence of quality check of liquor at the time of issuing licences to vendors, as exposed by the CAG report on the now-scrapped excise policy of the previous AAP government.

“The CAG report said the liquor licence did not fulfil the obligation of getting liquor samples tests. Such a policy of the AAP encouraged the sale of illicit liquor in the city,” he said.

He said the government lost an additional Rs 941 crore due to the exemptions that had to be given to the zonal licensees.

The CAG report said the exchequer lost around Rs 890 crore as the AAP did not re-tender the surrendered retail liquor licences, he said.

Greater Kailash MLA Shika Rai joined the debate on the CAG report by alleging that the easy availability of liquor in Delhi under AAP’s faulty excise policy of “one-plus-one” bottles had a negative impact on low-income groups.

“Incidents of domestic violence increased along with debt in the city,” she said, adding that at a time when many poor people were struggling to earn income, they were lured into spending a lot of money on liquor.

The CAG report tabled in the Delhi Assembly on Tuesday said that the policy of former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his ministers allegedly caused a loss of over Rs 2,002 crore to the exchequer.
