Police in J&K’s Kulgam district arrest man with heroin-like substance

Srinagar, Sept 11 (IANS) Police in Jammu and Kashmir’s (J&K’s) Kulgam district said on Friday it has arrested one person from whose possession 60 grams of heroin-like substance was recovered.

Police said that during dynamic naka checking on the National Highway near Navyug Tunnel on Friday, a naka party of Police Station Qazigund intercepted an Alto K10 bearing temporary registration No. JK01C-0049T.

“During the ensuing checking, a polythene bag containing approximately 60 grams of Heroin-like substance was recovered from a passenger travelling in the front seat of the vehicle.

“The passenger was identified as Sikandar Singh son of Vasakha Singh, resident of Moga, Punjab, and was taken into custody.

“In this connection, case FIR No. 20/2026 under Section 8/21 of the NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Qazigund, and investigation has been initiated,” police said.

“The investigation is underway to establish the source and intended destination of the recovered contraband and to ascertain the involvement of any other persons in the drug-trafficking network.

“Kulgam Police reiterates its commitment to combating the menace of drug trafficking and urges the public to extend cooperation in identifying and reporting activities related to the illegal trade and distribution of narcotic substances,” it added.

Police in J&K has been carrying out aggressive operations against drug smugglers and drug peddlers and the operations are continuing unabated even after the 100-day-long Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyaan.

Properties created out of the proceeds of drug trade worth millions have been attached by police during the recent months. In addition to the penal action prescribed against such criminals, cancellation of passports, driving licences and Aadhaar card are additional penalties imposed on these criminals.

Police and the security forces believe that the funds generated through drug smuggling, hawala money rackets etc are finally used to sustain terrorism in J&K. In majority of the major drug networks busted by the authorities in J&K and Punjab, the trail was finally traced to Pakistan.

3 killed in anti-Waqf Act protests in Bengal’s Murshidabad

Kolkata, April 12 (IANS) Three persons have been killed on Saturday following the violence over protests by a section of people from a particular religious community against the newly promulgated Waqf Amendment Act that has gripped several parts in minority-dominated Murshidabad district of West Bengal for the last few days.

Of the three killed, two are father and son namely Hargobindo Das and Chandan Das, the residents of Dhulian at Samserganj in Murshidabad.

It is alleged both of them were hacked to death by a section of the protesters.

Amit Malviya, BJP’s Information Technology Cell Chief and the party’s central observer for West Bengal, uploaded the bodies of the killed father and the son on his official X account and said it was because of the reluctance of the state administration acting against those resorting to such violence in the name of protests.

The third death is of an unidentified minor who was shot at Suti, also in Murshidabad, after getting trapped amid the violence.

The youth and his friend reportedly got trapped amid the violence at the Sajur Crossing at Suti on Friday and were shot.

Both the minors were rushed to a local hospital and finally one of them died at the hospital on Saturday.

On Saturday, the Additional Director General of Police of West Bengal, Javed Shamim, informed media persons that a total of 118 persons have been arrested so far in connection with the violence at Murshidabad.

He cautioned people of attempts to instigate violence through spreading rumours.

Meanwhile, Malviya has accused the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Cabinet colleagues like State Library Services Minister Siddiqullah Chowdhury of taking the first initiative to stoke widespread discontent over the Waqf Amendment Act, even when the Joint Parliamentary Committee and the Parliament were still discussing provisions to curb misuse and add safeguards to the new law.

“She has actively instigated and sponsored violence, particularly after Friday prayers. West Bengal’s state Library Minister, Siddiqullah Choudhury, who also heads the state unit of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind — publicly said that a call came from the Chief Minister’s office, saying that she was very happy to see such a gathering,” the BJP leader had claimed.

Earlier on Saturday, the Chief Minister had issued a statement where she for the first time proclaimed “officially”, “directly” and “clearly” that the Waqf Amendment Act will not be implemented in the state.

In the statement, the Chief Minister also argued that since the new Act would not be implemented in West Bengal there was no need for protests against the act getting violent and turning into a riot-like situation in the state.

Reacting to this statement, Malviya claimed that the Chief Minister’s proclamation was utter falsehood.

“The truth is that no state government has the authority to block a law passed by the Indian Parliament. Mamata Banerjee has no choice but to comply. She bears full responsibility for the communal violence and the tragic loss of life that has followed,” Malviya claimed in a statement issued on Saturday.

CBI probe extends to Kerala in NEET leak case

Thiruvananthapuram, May 13 (IANS) The widening investigation into the NEET question paper leak has now cast a shadow over Kerala, with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probing the possible involvement of students from two districts in the state.

Investigators suspect that a ‘model question paper’, allegedly prepared from the leaked original NEET paper, had reached several students in Kerala days before the examination.

The Kerala connection surfaced after the Rajasthan Police handed over details of nearly 200 students believed to have accessed the leaked paper.

Among them are students linked to Kerala, while investigators are also probing the role of a medical student from Churu, Rajasthan, currently studying in the state.

Officials suspect he acted as a key link in circulating the paper among aspirants in Kerala.

The CBI has now widened its investigation to 10 states and formed a special investigation team, deploying four separate squads to track the network behind what is emerging as one of the biggest entrance exam frauds in recent years.

Preliminary findings suggest the leak originated not during transportation of question papers, as seen in earlier scams, but directly from the printing press in Nashik, Maharashtra, where this year’s NEET paper was printed.

Investigators allege that a medical student named Shubham Karniyar secured the original paper from the press and passed it through intermediaries in Haryana.

From there, it allegedly reached the masterminds operating from Sikar.

To avoid suspicion, the original leaked paper was reportedly modified into the form of a “model question paper” before being circulated through networks in states, including Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar. Investigators found that 90 Biology questions and 35 out of 45 Chemistry questions in the model paper matched the actual exam paper.

The papers were allegedly sold through platforms such as Telegram and WhatsApp for amounts ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 2 lakh, exposing what officials describe as a highly organised interstate examination racket.

Major rejig in Rajasthan bureaucracy; 34 officers transferred

Jaipur, March 19 (IANS) In a major administrative overhaul, the Rajasthan government has transferred 25 IAS and nine IPS officers, effecting significant changes across key departments.

Senior IAS officer Alok Gupta has been appointed as Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) of the Urban Development and Housing (UDH) Department. He has been relieved of his role as Chairman of the Pollution Control Board and will also hold additional charge as Principal Secretary, UDH, and Chairman of the Housing Board.

Ajitabh Sharma, who was serving as Principal Secretary, Energy, has been posted as Chairman of the Revenue Board, Ajmer.

Meanwhile, the charge of the Water Supply Department has been withdrawn from Akhil Arora, ACS to the Chief Minister.

Aparna Arora has been moved from the Social Justice and Empowerment Department to take over as ACS, Mines and Petroleum.

Shreya Guha, ACS, Rural Development, has been appointed Director General of the HCM Rajasthan State Institute of Public Administration (HCM RIPA) and Managing Director of the Rajasthan Financial Corporation.

ACS Praveen Gupta has been given additional charge of the Youth Affairs and Sports Department along with the Public Works Department (PWD). However, Tourism, Archaeology, and the Amer Development Authority have been taken away from his purview.

Rajesh Yadav has been appointed Secretary, School Education and Language Department, replacing his earlier role at HCM RIPA.

Hemant Gera has been shifted from Chairman, Revenue Board, to Secretary, Water Supply Department.

Neeraj K. Pawan, Secretary, Sports, has been transferred as Director General of the Indira Gandhi Panchayati Raj Institute. His transfer comes amid ongoing discussions surrounding sports administration in the state.

Purna Chand Kishan (P.C. Kishan), who had been on Awaiting Posting Orders (APO) since December 29, 2025, following his return from central deputation, has now been appointed Secretary, Labour and Factories Department, along with additional charge as Secretary, Health Services (ECS).

In a significant move, Aarti Dogra has been entrusted with expanded responsibilities across the energy sector. Currently serving as Chairperson of state DISCOMs, she will now also serve as Secretary, Energy Department, and Chairperson of Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam. The changes follow the transfer of Ajitabh Sharma.

Poonam, Divisional Commissioner of Jaipur, has been transferred as Secretary, Women and Child Development Department.

V. Saravan Kumar, previously Secretary, Science and Technology, has been appointed as the new Divisional Commissioner of Jaipur.
